Have you ever had a panic attack or mental breakdown?

FEEL FREE TO ADD TO THIS POST AT ANYTIME THIS IS MEANT TO BE AN OPEN, SUPPORTIVE FORUM

I know it's a bit of a serious topic but I kind of want to talk about it.
I've had two panic attacks and one mental breakdown
poetryandwine · 56-60, F
Yes, in my early twenties I suddenly felt like I couldn't breath. Nothing physically wrong and the doctor put me on Valium which made me feel spaced out, so I stop taking them and lived through it. I still get it now sometimes.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@poetryandwine I’m proud of you for making it this far🤗💙
eyeno · M
Just due to Growing pains of accepting decisions and things one just cant change.

JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@eyeno Good luck
Sending my support💙
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@Dino11 That’s good!
Miram · 31-35, F
Yes. The difficult part is having to face those who saw you when you were vunerable.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@Miram Yeah I had one panic attack at work but the other in the nurses office at school and my mental breakdown I was home alone. So it could have been a lot worst on that front
JaggedLittlePill · 46-50, F
@Miram The shame and embarrassmemt is real
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@JaggedLittlePill After my second one I called out of work for two day because I was so scared of what everyone thought
For once I'll creep out of my little corner and post elsewhere.
I had a full blown panic attack tonight. I still don't feel very well. I hate these things. What's super weird is that I have no idea why it happened tonight. Usually I get them because I'm out in public and I start worrying about stuff or something. Today I was just in my room though. Sitting at my desk. Posting on SW. What the fuck, brain?
I always feel like I'm about to die, and I want to run out and ask someone for help. But I don't. Because I'm too embarrassed. I hate how tight and heavy my chest feels. I always take my bra off because I feel like it contributes to the pain, but when it doesn't get better, I feel like I need a knife to cut whatever is hurting in my chest. I hate that I don't remember to breathe. It feels like I'm being asphyxiated. So I panic even more.
Do panic attacks make you feel dysfunctional? Like what the hell is wrong with me? They make me want to quit life. I'm not normal.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@Nadie So we took wood and made a bunch of walls out of them
[image deleted]This is a few of the 16 total we built, we need to make 9 more next week
@JRVanguard oh. this is exactly what my head thought of but didn't think it could be right. xD
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@Nadie It was a pain in the ass to make but it was a nice change of place and cool to do
SW-User
Breakdowns a couple of times when I was seriously suicidal. I don't think I've ever had a panic attack, despite being anxious about most things.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@SW-User Yeah I used to spend a lot of days with my Dad's gun shaking in my hand
SW-User
@JRVanguard I hope you're better now. 🤗
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@SW-User I am I think I have a better understanding of myself now than I did and know how to help myself. Thank you and I hope you're feeling better now too!🤗
I've had a couple of full blown panic attacks. It felt like I was dying.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@ProdigalSummer I had one at work but tried working right after it happened and my boss told me to go to home I felt like I was dead and just incredibly embarrassed
UndeadPrivateer · 31-35, M
Many, many, many panic attacks. A few mental breakdowns. Life's rough.
UndeadPrivateer · 31-35, M
@JRVanguard Oh I don't care at all. I'm not ashamed of nor do I hide my anxiety and depression. They're just human things. They sure can be stressful though. I dare anyone to go through the same shit I have and come out anywhere near the functional mental state I currently possess.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@UndeadPrivateer Hey good for you for keeping your chin high, I think I'm going to keep the post I think it can do a lot of good
UndeadPrivateer · 31-35, M
@JRVanguard I think that could definitely help some people who are going through the same. Dealing with anxiety and depression can be a very lonely thing, it helps a lot to know that you're not alone in the experience.

@Mayumi I’ll probably still be up by the time you wake up but thank you😊😂
I have had two panic that were serious. Minor ones, often when driving.

Hospitalization 14 days for a breakdown. There was too much going on in my life and it overwhelmed me to the point that I couldn't do anything except think about suicide.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@Mondayschild How do you feel now?
@JRVanguard as far as my depression and anxiety go I manage that with meds. I am doing fine now. Thank you for asking.
SW-User
Yep. I've had many panic attacks, including a couple in public (I went to the bathroom, but I was still at my high school, then later in college). They usually would involve hallucinations of a dark figure behind a door watching me.

I had a mental breakdown once (unless attempted suicides count, too?) in which I cried like a baby every night for like..two weeks? Or maybe a month.. It was due to a realization about myself that I'd been in denial about my entire life. I'm still in denial. I don't rock the boat.

Currently, I rarely will have a panic attack anymore, but when I do, the hallucinations are much worse and appear much more quickly. And that's my experience
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@SW-User I'd like that
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@JRVanguard Please message me if you need support. I have suffered through several panic attacks. I take medication.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@greenmountaingal
Thank you
That’s very kind of you💙
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
Yes. Three years ago, I got an antibiotic resistent UTI along with some very bad medical care. The infection increased and then affected my brain and became delirium, a serious delusional mental illness which is, fortunately, almost always temporary. It was very frightening. I tried to get my friends to come help me but nobody would because I was too crazy to explain it to them.
SW-User
Ive had dozens of Panic attacks. My gawd.
Luckily they started going away over the span of 2017...that shit was a daily thing... I guess my psychological health is getting better.
Im so glad i stopped talking to my ex. best decision i ever made regarding her.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@SW-User Hey I’m glad to hear you’re doing much better man. Sorry to hear about the ones in your past but I hope that part of your life is done
SW-User
@JRVanguard thxs m8. it is.
SW-User
I nearly died. I thought it was just an asthma attack but I haven't had one since i was in high school.
Broke down into tears and almost fainted. Lol i thought i was going to die that moment because i couldn't breathe and my heart was beating so fast.
It happened on my mom's funeral. 😕
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@SW-User Oh I never knew that you had lost your mom
My deepest sympathies
That had to have been so stressful and unbearable, I can imagine how that would of caused it
I hope you’ve been better since
You’re a great person, she would be proud of you🤗
Sb356 · 26-30, F
I've had 3 anxiety attacks in one month and I usually get em once a month so that wasn't fun.
Sb356 · 26-30, F
Thanks☺️
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@Sb356 I know about panic attacks triggered by loneliness. And I have no particular interest in looking for any kind of romantic situation. It's not about lack of romance. It's about not connecting with people, not finding people I can relate to who accept me. It's about being old and having all your close friends die or move away.
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@Sb356 Yeah, me, too. Loneliness is my #1 enemy. You not only feel sad and bad, you feel like you must deserve it.
Dayeshadow · 51-55, M
Yes. I left my second wife and moved back to my home town. She flew there to me and begged me to give it a second chance, so I moved back to Cali. As soon as I got back I went to the laundromat to do her laundry and at the laundromat I had the first panic attack of my life.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@Dayeshadow I’m sorry, the first one is always a horrible experience because it’s so unfamiliar on top of everything else
Brookeeboop · 41-45, F
I have had multiple mental breakdowns. I have had more than i can count. I have also been hospitalized 6 times. The last time was when i was 26; 8 years ago. I live with bipolar disorder. Self care is the best remedy for me.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@Brookeeboop 8 Years is a long time without one, does that mean you’ve been doing better lately?
melovemycats · 26-30, F
Yes, I've had quite a few of them at work. Kind of sucks because I have had my leads tell me to "just calm down" when I take some criticism too personally. They probably think I'm crazy, and I guess to a certain degree I am, but they clearly don't understand that it's pretty much impossible for me to calm down right away. Even if I stop crying for a bit, there's a period of time where what I like to call "resurges" can happen, where the slightest thing can set me off and I start crying again. Call them panic attacks, breakdowns or whatever, they suck all the same.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@melovemycats You’re not crazy, many many people have these problems. It’s never easy when it happens and even harder when those around you don’t understand. I’m sorry that they happen so often
(Also sorry it took me so long to see this, it must have gotten mixed up in the notifications)
Beatbox34 · 31-35, M
I have had more anxiety attacks than panic attacks.

Mental breakdown. Yes. I'm dealing with one now.

A simple example of the mental breakdown would be I have had times where I felt I was hallucinating and on some occasions I lost it in a way where I started forgetting everything even things that were told to me a minute ago.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@Beatbox34 Any amount of progress is great progress
I can’t imagine this quarantine has helped much either
We’re in such a depressing time to be going through something like that
Is the pandemic the bitter reality you were speaking of, or something more specific to you?
If you’re comfortable speaking about it of course
Beatbox34 · 31-35, M
@JRVanguard I'll PM you as to why
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@Beatbox34 Okay
Thank you
Ohbabe · 22-25, F
the other day I started having a panic attack in my therapists office and she did a great job helping me (:
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@Ohbabe Did she smile a little and then tell you to breathe deeply? That's what they usually do.
Ohbabe · 22-25, F
@greenmountaingal no she talked me through it.
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
I had a panic attack in the midst of a mental breakdown. My neighbor observed me and then told every person in my neighborhood that I had "gone completely crazy and was permanently delusional." Not true at all, but it messed up all my neighborhood friendships.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@greenmountaingal I’m sorry to hear that you’re suffering through that
Do you still have those same symptoms?
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@JRVanguard No. I finally got a good doctor. I am OK now.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@greenmountaingal
I’m so glad heat that
Congratulations!
SW-User
Yes, I had a nervous breakdown twice in my marriage as he was a constant cheater an liar. I have had panic attacks as well.
I am doing much better now.
SW-User
@JRVanguard Kind of I got an anxiety attack this year, but the cause is no longer relevant so I am calm now.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@SW-User Well that’s good, my last one was caused by the job I quit a few months ago but I find myself wanting to go back and have to slap myself out of that mentality. I’m glad your cause is not relevant any more
Do you still *see him? @SW-User
I think might be having seasonal depression and I am mourning the loss of a young nephew. It's so had to say anything here at home because my entire family is grieving.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@Mondayschild You’re very welcome, I’m glad to see you back
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
I had one once. I was actually in the shower. I didn't know what was happening at first.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@Spoiledbrat The first one's the scariest because you've never felt it before, luckily I was in my school nurse's office so she knew what was happening
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
I've come close to a panic attack but never had a full-blown one. However my wife who has always dealt with anxiety and depression had a full-fledged breakdown two years ago, and is still recovering with several setbacks. So panic attacks or breakdowns are semi-frequent, but becoming rare. Doing what I can to help her.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@CountScrofula I’m so sorry to hear that, how are you two recovering from it?
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@JRVanguard Doing really well. She's returning to work in a month or so! Bad days happen, but good days are more common now, and her symptoms aren't as scary. Anxiety can still be severe, but can be managed. Thanks for asking :)
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@CountScrofula Oh that’s great. You’re very welcome! I’m very happy to hear that she’s made such positive strides
TheCaliforniaKid · 31-35, M
I have anxiety and depression, since I was an young teen but lately it's been really bad,I think Im on the verge of being suicidal again....
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@TheCaliforniaKid No problem man, anytime you need to talk I’m here🤗
TheCaliforniaKid · 31-35, M
@JRVanguard thanks, i really apreciate it🙂
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@TheCaliforniaKid Of course, anytime
It’s why I’m here☺
CheshireCatalyst · 36-40, M
I shut down for about half an hour once. Had a huge argument with my dad and step mum about my wedding, they stormed out of the house and I feeling like I had absolutely no way to fix it.

I've never felt like that before or since, there's almost always a way. But I just couldn't find any way through the situation.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@CheshireCatalyst I completely understand
Helplessness and stress are two of the biggest factors to causing a breakdown
Zer0Point · 31-35, F
The first panic attack I've ever had was crazy, I literally thought I was dying. I was so scared. And for a short period of time after that I would get them so bad I couldn't even walk 10 feet away from my house, I'd have to go back. This was a few years ago, I don't have them as much anymore now.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@Zer0Point Well I’m very glad to here you’re doing better, it is a very scary experience, it’s very hard to do anything right afterwards
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@JRVanguard Or have anyone treat you with respect. Once you've cracked up, even if you quickly recover, you are seen as crazy/delusional forever.
SW-User
Years ago I used to have panic attacks or what seemed to be regularly, there would be times as a teen I'd hyperventilate and on time it felt like it would never end and by miracle I fell asleep after quite some time, I'm not sure if I've had a mental breakdown yet but I've most likely come very close to it.
ISMELLPROTEINPOWDER · 22-25, M
I had a physical panic attack coming out of the shower explode into a puke
ISMELLPROTEINPOWDER · 22-25, M
@JRVanguard nothing really I don't think so it's just the muscles in my body started Jerking for no reason and I couldn't move for awhile
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@ISMELLPROTEINPOWDER Okay, well that's probably a bit scarier not knowing what caused it
ISMELLPROTEINPOWDER · 22-25, M
@JRVanguard just having a Jerking reflex covered in puke wouldn't stop convulsing feel like forever
SW-User
I have many panic attacks and sometimes depression
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@SW-User I’m very happy to hear that things are better💙

My depression has lucky gone but anxiety is always lingering ya know
SW-User
@JRVanguard I've come to believe that anxiety triggers the depression as you get sick of fighting your mind
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@SW-User I think that’s very wise and likely true
i have had a nervous breakdown before. my friend used to have panic attacks. i prayed for you.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@AliceinWonderland Yes I’ve never felt anything remotely close, and I’m horrified of anything that gives a similar sensation
@JRVanguard may you be filled with peace
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@AliceinWonderland Thank you very much, and the same to you

@BlueClapTrap I've been there, I was always so nervous about asking for time of at work that I'd usually just work around it and then eventually I'd get frustrated
Maybe sorta right now
Ok thanks 😬
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@SStarfish Feel better
Thank you ☺️
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
Yes, I've had both. Now, thanks to a good doctor and better medical care, I am well again.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@greenmountaingal
I’m very glad to hear that you’re doing better now!
How long did you suffer with it?
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@JRVanguard About 3 years.
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@JRVanguard Urinary tract infections can cause serious mental illness especially in older women.
SW-User
I've had panic attacks during tests before. I imagine driving with your eyes closed is a similar feeling.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@SW-User Oh I’m sorry to hear that, are you in school now?
Butterflykisses24 · 51-55, F
I have had panic attacks and gave PTSD
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@Butterflykisses24 Aww friend
I’m very sorry to hear that you suffer with those issues💚
Butterflykisses24 · 51-55, F
@JRVanguard thanks I went through emdr therapy which helped more the tradition therapy.I'm functioning now but at times havent
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@Butterflykisses24 Well at least it sounds like positive strides are being made💙
Elysian · F
Yes. I panic and Ive had a few breakdowns. One very recently
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@Elysian I’m sorry to hear that are you having the same issues that caused it?
Elysian · F
@JRVanguard thank you. Yes
SW-User
Breakdown yes; panic attacks no.
SW-User
@JRVanguard It is pretty bad.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@SW-User Yeah with the panic attacks I was able talk to people right after it but with my mental breakdown I just laid on the floor for what felt like an eternity
SW-User
@JRVanguard I feel the same way all the time.
passingby8 · 31-35, F
I've had both.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@passingby8 I’m so glad to hear that!🤗

Thank you
I’m much better about managing stress these days so I’m fortunate to not have had any issues lately
passingby8 · 31-35, F
@JRVanguard That's good :)🤗
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@passingby8 🤗💙
SW-User
Panic attacks.
I have anxiety at times.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@SW-User
Sorry to hear that
Do you have panic attacks often?
And have they become more or less frequent?
ButterRobot · 51-55, M
ive come close.
JRVanguard · 26-30, M
@ButterRobot That can be tough too, when you feel it happening but it never does
