Go see what the tax rates were during Eisenhower.

Reagan slashed taxes which reduced revenues and we have never recovered.

Our electric grid, water supply, and infrastructure all need maintenance/repair/replacement. These things don't fix thrmselves.

Imagine if schools cut out all the useless electives a student is forced to take in order to get a degree. That would be an excellent step in the right direction to reducing costs of overpriced education.

@irishmolly72 Unemployment may be low but graduates with unpaid loans could be flipping burgers or filling jobs for high school grads just to make ends meet. The jobless graduate with unpaid loans is likely to be a loser to begin with. Government programs to assist losers are cooked up by Congress. Those in Congress who voted for the programs must pick up the tab.

That's easy to do when you can print money via the Federal Reserve. The federal debt is now approaching $33 Trillion. Think we going to pay any of that back? This is a racket.

@irishmolly72 I meant to say that the Congressmen are personally responsible. You are right. They are our representatives and we are the ones holding the bag for their silly policies.

What a fabulous day 🙂🙂🙂 I have no problem with people paying their own bills. If you don't want to pay the bill then don't go or at least consider a community college. The cost there is far more affordable. That's where I went and I am not embarrassed to admit it. I worked and paid cash as I went. I never had a bill.
Ynotisay · M
@Musicman There you go bud. It's all about you. What an awesome human being. Bet you throw a flag up this weekend and beat your chest about what a great patriot you are, right? Whatever dude.
Musicman · 61-69, M
@Ynotisay Actually I have never flown a flag. My dad did though. About five years before he passed he had a flag pole installed and flew one daily. He was a Army Korean war combat veteran.

I never said education wasn't good. All I said was don't get the most expensive one you can find because you will be paying for it for years. No, I don't think the tax payers should have to pay for everyone's college degree. What about the kids who don't want to go to college. Are you going to pay for their vocational training?
Ynotisay · M
@Musicman Fair enough. But if you'd been following this issue, and the even bigger one regarding a proposal for "free" secondary education, you'd know that vocational schools were included. And that runs from cosmetology to swinging a hammer.
But what happened is that conservatives sold this as being the bastion of the "liberal elite." And that's SO not what it's about. Just another example of how so many are so quick to kiss the hand that beats them and why so many fight against what's in their own best interest. Because they're told to.

@MasterLee
no bailouts of any kind. Not ukraine, not corporations, not students.
I would suggest that we consider a Balanced Budget Amendment. If the taxpayers had to see direct tax increases for these subsidies, there is no way they would happen. As it stands now we just increase our $32 Trillion debt ad infinitum. Biden, Trump et al. just printed the money they needed via their pawns at the Fed.

This will all end in tears.
irishmolly72 · 56-60, F

No, he was subsidizing a group of young people who will eventually become some of the wealthiest people in human history. He was buying votes by printing fake money and giving it away to people who don't need it.

Americans will pay through inflation.... the cruelest tax of all because it's regressive. Therefore he's hurting poor americans to buy votes from future wealthy americans. It's a shell game, and all the liberals are fooled.
We've pulled more people on the planet out of poverty than any other country in human history...... and it's not even close!
Stated with confidence. Alas, and as usually is the case with you, it's absolutely not true.

The correct statement, is that the US created more rich people than any other country in human history.... and not's even close. Examples stretch all the way from the post civil war robber baron era, all the way to the tech boom, and up and including the pandemic boom.

Alas, 12% of the US lives below the poverty level, and the middle class has collapsed. Even those who can afford to eat, are seeing their life spans cut short, due to lack of health insurance, and cost of medical services.

China, on the other hand has 0% of its people living below the poverty line, and everyone has guaranteed healthcare.

I am not arguing methods or politics, just stating facts.

@MarmeeMarch Literally in the whole first-world a part of taxes cover a significant amount of education costs, including yes college level education. This because if not enough people can afford specializing, the economy gets heavily f*cked with a shortage of specialized workers.

On the other hand, bailing out rich CEOs for them to spend it in yatches and partying has zero return whatsoever to the taxpayers, and ultimately is a waste of public money.

As I told you, this ain't Russia, I have free speech. I'll continue to point out how you're in favor or wasting public money in bailouts that give absolutely zero returns to the taxpayers, while opposing economic reliefs to students that are critical for the system. In other words, you're here advocating for the US to go down the Russian brain drain path, because like the other Republicans on here, you're full of sh*t and actually care zero about tax money, only "owning the libs". And you know already when you can put that flag. NATO will continue to back Ukraine, deal with it, and cope.

Biden is a doof. Can't get healthcare for veterans but wants to buy votes.

Plus paying back the students loans, in any amount, on the backs of taxpayers cannot exceed 10% of disposable income. If you have no income for 20 years, all is forgiven. So the message is: borrow money, get a degree, don't work, get free money.

Compare this to ppp: if we had not had a plandemic, forcing mom and pop businesses to close their doors. Forced to take ppp to feed their families.

Impeach now.

College as an investment: Our president is subsidizing the people who are represented in the purple bars:

Is there any wonder costs are sky high? It's basically turning into a massive speculative bubble. This usually happens when government stupidly subsidizes things it deems "good" for society, like Barney Frank's insane subsidization of housing in the early 2000s.

This is not to say that housing and education are bad for society, but rather that the stupid subsidization of them is. We discover this over and over again.

irishmolly72 · 56-60, F
@Gloomy
Infinite growth on a finite planet and endless competition isn't the best.
Growth doesn't just come from making more stuff. Growth can come from using existing resources in a much more efficient way.
Economic growth occurs whenever people take resources and rearrange them in ways that are more valuable. A useful metaphor for production in an economy comes from the kitchen. To create valuable final products, we mix inexpensive ingredients together according to a recipe. The cooking one can do is limited by the supply of ingredients, and most cooking in the economy produces undesirable side effects. If economic growth could be achieved only by doing more and more of the same kind of cooking, we would eventually run out of raw materials and suffer from unacceptable levels of pollution and nuisance. Human history teaches us, however, that economic growth springs from better recipes, not just from more cooking. New recipes generally produce fewer unpleasant side effects and generate more economic value per unit of raw material
