Expecting people to be fiscally responsible? 😳 The horror. Yes...education costs have sky rockted astronomically over the last 30+ years...increasing at a rate far greater than the cost of living. I wonder what happened? 🙄

@BizSuitStacy I also wonder how or why these students didn’t know how much $$$ their education was going to cost before taking that plunge?
Carla · 61-69, F
@BizSuitStacy unchecked greed at the university level.
BizSuitStacy · M
@Carla On that, we can agree.
Gloomy · F
@stratosranger how dare people study something they are passionate about and work a job they might even find fullfilling one day.
Also the costs are ridiculously high

BizSuitStacy · M
@stratosranger That one is a head scratcher...particularly if the student gets a degree in a subject that doesn't lead to a decent paying job.
stratosranger · M
@Gloomy It might be all the electives they are forced to take that have nothing to do with the degree they are studying for that drive those costs through the roof.
stratosranger · M
@BizSuitStacy Bingo
Gloomy · F
@stratosranger but aren't electives just interdisciplinary studies meaning you just take some courses from other subjects?
BizSuitStacy · M
@stratosranger this was about 35 years ago, but my annual tuition was just under $1,000 for the year. 5 of us rented a 3 bedroom apartment at about $500/month. I don't recall what we paid for food and utilities, but I made enough just working in the summer to almost cover all the costs. Today, I hear about students getting a degree in poetry, and walking out $200K in debt. Great ROI 🙄.
The stupid answer is loan forgiveness and force everyone else to pay more taxes because it further enables to root cause to the problem.

@BizSuitStacy teens think they're entitled to executive pay
luckranger71 · 51-55, M
@MarineBob Congrats on having the most boomer take of all! Now get those kids off your lawn.
BizSuitStacy · M
@luckranger71 So, what's your solution to the astronomical cost of education? Or do you just want to whine and point fingers?
luckranger71 · 51-55, M
@BizSuitStacy if you look elsewhere in responses to this post, you’ll find it my view. Also, I was pointing out whining about kids today 😎
BizSuitStacy · M
@luckranger71 I read your responses. None of them address the disproportionate cost increases of college adjusted for inflation.

@BizSuitStacy a favorite waiter of mine has a degree in golf course management ...ever seen a 23 year old golf course manager
BizSuitStacy · M
@MarineBob I know of a couple of people that have degrees in turf management...essentially a botany degree specializing in grass. A lot of biology, botany, chemistry, math, etc. is required. IF, and that's a big if, you can get a job at a prestigious club like a Pinehurst course in NC, you can make good money. But there's thousands of graduates competing for that one job. So, yeah...you end up working on a restaurant or something else to make ends meet.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
@BizSuitStacy something schools fail to tell you
stratosranger · M
@MarineBob School admissions are like military recruiters. The less you know the more they screw you
BizSuitStacy · M
@MarineBob One of the biggest problems with many universities...they think they are done once the student graduates. They need to go the extra mile to make sure recruiters come to the schools, interview and place students in jobs. The universities that are good at doing this, and they have loyal alumni who donate back to the school. NC State is exceptional in this regard. When the veterinary school there needed to raise funds, alumni contributed $26 million in a few days. Washington State University's vet school needed funds and only raised about $500K. The people running most universities are shooting themselves in the foot.

@BizSuitStacy Education was demoted to another "market" in the name of capitalism
BizSuitStacy · M
@MethDozer demoted in the name of capitalism? 🤣 The vast majority of colleges and universities are land grant. Where do you come up with this stuff?
MethDozer · M
@BizSuitStacy
That's irrelevant. Most big business gets tax breaks and subsidies. That isn't counter to capitalism. They're protections of it.
The point being. Educatio. Was left to be guided by "the markets" and allowed to be run for profit. It's colleges doing what the system cherishes most. Bilking as much money as it can out of labor.

@BizSuitStacy another larger contributing factor is the trend that statrted where menial jibs statted using college degrees ( in anything at all no matter how unrelated or necessary) as a tool to class screen possible employees.
Sorry bro. You can't blame the (((leftists))) on this one. It's your beloved liberal capitalism at work here. And yes, you are true liberal by true definition. Nit the (((leftist))). Liberalism=unchecked capitalism.

BizSuitStacy · M
@MethDozer if by liberal capitalism, you mean gov't in bed with universities...sure. But has nothing to do with actual capitalism, bro.
MethDozer · M
@BizSuitStacy Sure it does. The system is designed and owned by capitalist and so it serves maintain capitalist hedgemony. That's why we have trickle down "Reagonomics", corporate bailouts, a freeze on Wall street when some pranksters on reddit game the system the same way large investment firms do(Gamestop stock), wars in other countries when they try to turn socialist or push back against American corporate buisiness interest, the welfare state, the real estate lobby, etc.. All of it is in defence of and maintaining capitalist hedgemony.
Look up the a tual defintion of liberalism and neoliberalism sometime instead of listening to Fox news pundits tell you their invented definition of what it means.
