Should Hospitals have the right to turn away Covid patients from those who have chosen to be unvaccinated?

Why should someone who makes the decision to not be vaccinated take a bed and be treated from someone who has taken precautions and had a breakthrough case?
Shouldn't the unvaccinated just stay home and deal with this virus on their own?
Your thoughts

I'm the 500th reply! Where's my prize.
@Human1000 There you go, I gave you BC, at least until it reaches 1,000 😁
spjennifer · 56-60, T
@Human1000 What were you expecting, like 72 virgins? 🤔😆
Human1000 · M
@spjennifer Personally, prefer more experienced. Let's work on that.

No, hospitals exist to treat the sick. But employers should have the option to require workers to be vaccinated as a condition of continued employment. With the exception of those suffering from compromised immune systems, who can’t be vaccinated.
@independentone Thank you for BC.
caesar7 · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussard ...here here!!!👐
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@bijouxbroussard there really are very few people who would be worse off being immunized than not being immunized. Those with immunodeficiencies, NEED vaccine even more.
That’s a heartless, cold way of dealing with human life. Turn people away because they didn’t do what I think is the right course of action.
Maybe next time you break a leg doing something stupid you should ask yourself if going to seek treatment is appropriate.
fddlpej · 61-69, M
@nonsensiclesnail I think it definitely has made that much of a difference. Look at what Jim Jones convinced people to do. Not really that much different from what trump has done. Look at what people have done for him that people have never done before. Attack the capital as well as making up things about the vaccine having nanobots in it. Yes I believe he is a cult leader they don't even care when he lies to them.
@fddlpej He does have groups that look to him, pray to him. He’s very much a cult leader. Intelligent, well educated people swallowed his kool aid.
Shutting the unvaccinated out of hospitals won’t fix this. They’re not naughty children who didn’t eat their vegetables. They are people who matter as much as everyone else. Punishing them isn’t the answer.
fddlpej · 61-69, M
@nonsensiclesnail maybe not but they make poor decisions that affect the rest of us. So we need to do something to snap them out of it or they will continue to mess up the country. U can only think of one way right now and that's at least making them wait for access to a hospital behind people who have not put this country at risk like they have. I don't really know what else to do to break the cult.
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
The hospitals should take care of everyone regardless whether they are vaccinated or not. I am definitely for everyone getting vaccinated but we cannot punish those who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons or even those who do not want the vaccine.
fddlpej · 61-69, M
@iamonfire696 it is really scary how someone can have that much control over people especially someone of his lack of respect and decency for others. He's even made fun of his own supporters saying they smell and need a bath. Ir doesn't seem to bother them at all. Lol
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@fddlpej they just keep making excuses for him.
fddlpej · 61-69, M
@iamonfire696 so did his parents lol. I would be ashamed to say that I had a hand in creating someone like him.
GJOFJ3 · 61-69, M
That is totally stupid logic
By that logic they should turn away cancer patients who smoke
Refuse to treat patients who have attempted suicide
fddlpej · 61-69, M
@MrBrownstone yes they do but they are no longer allowed to do it in restaurants schools stores and almost anywhere people gather. So if you aren't vaccinated maybe you should only be allowed where smoking is aloud?
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@fddlpej So air doesn’t travel around? Interesting
fddlpej · 61-69, M
@MrBrownstone yes it does as smoke does that is why they have smoking areas. So maybe they should have unvaccinated areas?
HellsBelle · 31-35, F
Its insane how cruel the vaxxed are. Do you guys hear yourselves??? The unvaxxed wouldn't act this way if the vaxxed needed help at a hospital. Should a nurse turn away a sick covid vaxxed patient becaude the vax didn't work?
@CestManan If you don't believe in the vaccine, or in Covid, why would you seek medical treatment if you come down with Covid? Seems to me you should stick by your original plan and just ignore the medical community.
This message was deleted by its author.
Adogslife · 61-69, M
@HellsBelle So an intentionally unvaxxed CNA walks into her job at a local nursing home. She’s covid positive. Whether intentional or not, real people actually die. This happens every day. This girl should be fired. She’s as close to a murderer as exists currently. Of course the anti-vaxxers love not wearing their N-95 as required too. Maybe a little lax with people ppe? It’s all real.

And it’s criminal.

Take a job in a nursing home and just watch people die, by the dozens, for no reason other than unvaccinated people bringing it in from the community.

You “might” have a reaction to the vaccine, who knows. But there’s a 100% chance you’re murdering people through your self-absorption. That’s not a “who knows”. That’s fact.

That’s the difference between the vaxed and non.
ICU beds are full. That means people who would normally be in ICU like stroke or heart attack patients will be deferred. Where? In Arkansas on July 14 they had 1174 ICU beds with 61 available. On July 14 Gov, Asa Hutchinson announced 1309 new cases and those cases have multiplied.
People who would normally go to ICU will die because of COVID cases overrunning these hospitals.

fddlpej · 61-69, M

If you chose not to be vaccinated fine but then you should be last on the list for health care. That means behind the guy with a migraine also
@Spoiledbrat Never said you don't have a right to your ideas. When you spread them on a platform and give support for conspiracy theories that are literally killing people that is an issue.
I don't know what you're talking about. But if I wanted to share a conspiracy theory I surely could. @PicturesOfABetterTomorrow
People have the freedom to make their own choices. So they don't have to listen to me or you. That's why I also have the freedom to share my opinion that anti vaxers feel the vaccine is unsafe.
CestManan · 46-50, F
Well the vaxxed won't end up in the hospital anyways since they are saved by their Lord and savior Vaccine Christ!
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@QuixoticSoul Gee, the shots don't work either! Oh woe is us
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@sunsporter1649 Poor sporty, you just can’t seem to get there.

I hope not. I've had enough of hospitals this year. @CestManan
Elessar · 26-30, M
Imagine a hospital gets saturated by these people. At that point you'll be forced to make a choice, because resources are limited. Who do we save? The covid denier, in the name of equality, or someone who's not there as a consequence of their choice? How is choosing the former more "ethical" than the latter?

Priority queues exist already btw, think of organ transplantations.

So my answer is yes. In case of criticalities, CV+ cases that are not vaxxed by their own choice should get a lower priority of treatment over anyone else who hasn't explicitly chosen to be there.

Elessar · 26-30, M
@MarmeeMarch lol, it's average Marmee, it's not that Italians are predestined to die exactly 4 years after any American born in the same year. It's just to say that if the healthcare system here was as bad as depicted in American conservatives imaginary, that number would be much lower. Go check the life expectancy of Sierra Leone, for instance (55.2).

And to address the QoL question, well it's not necessarily bad. If you reach 84 years with untreated/chronical medical issues, obesity and what not then it's probably not going fine. But if you live in a place where healthy food habits and physical activity are part of the everyday routine chances are that you'll fare better. My grandpa is 82 and both swims and cycles at the present day, for instance.

Health service in Uk is free to all at point of use. If you start with vaccines will you move on to smokers, the overweight, drug users etc? It’s a short step from there to deciding if people are ‘worth’ treating based on their value to society.

I’d be dead, 8 year old girls with internal injuries are expensive to fix and don’t pay tax.
meJess · F
@iamonfire696 as are a number of other factors, triage is survival chances based on all evidence not just a vaccine.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@meJess no kidding
fddlpej · 61-69, M
@meJess if you have taken the vaccine you probably won't be in triage so you will eliminate that problem.
spjennifer · 56-60, T
Why would they go to the Hospital? I mean it's a hoax right, they didn't need the vaccine because it's no worse than the common flu so stay home, hide under the blankies and hope you survive 🥴

Well, not getting a vaccine isn’t a criminal act. It’s fair to note, having said that, that hospitals do treat actual criminals - despite the popular opinion of some.

Tsarnaev, the Boston Marathon bomber, is one that jumps quickly to mind because of where I live and work. He (and his brother) were responsible for a terrorist attacking that left 3 dead and 264 injured, some requiring traumatic amputations. He was treated at Beth Israel in Boston for multiple gun shot wounds.

That’s an example of a heinous crime that still is afforded the best care humanly possible. The goal of a hospital isn’t to sit in judgement, it’s to use every asset in their power to make people well.

Though I absolutely blame anti-vaxxers for the spread once a vaccine(s) has become available, they are by no means inherently giving up their right to the same health care afforded to all of us - even the worst, most despicable criminals.
KimmyGary · F
Then why take drunk drivers as they have no regard for others and kill and maim many
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
@KimmyGary you can't compare the two
@Jenny1234 Actually you can compare the two. Having the freedom to risk the health of others by not being vaccinated is no different than risking the lives of others on the road because someone chooses to drink and drive.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
No. I’m cool with hospitals not being able to turn away anyone in dire straits.
Then they should by the same logic turn away those who want abortions. They chose not to use protection, take care of it at home.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@stratosranger Some do, it is called the "coat hanger method".
Yikes. @CestManan
@CestManan I always thought it was a hungry rat on a string
CestManan · 46-50, F
If they did that, they would also be able to turn away cancer patients who are smokers.

Or turn away AIDS patients who are LGBT.

The list goes on.
fddlpej · 61-69, M
@CestManan not necessarily those people are not filling hospitals past capacity like anti vaxxers are.
CestManan · 46-50, F
@fddlpej Hospitals have been saying they are understaffed and over packed from day one.
fddlpej · 61-69, M

@Angel966 You might have a non-covid related situation. There are whole swaths (admittedly, incredibly stupid swaths) of country where it would be a really bad time to get into a car accident or have a heart attack.
@Angel966 A vaccine doesn't prevent someone from Covid, but it does lessen the effects of Covid if you do contract it.

@Spoiledbrat it might help to get them to see the truth instead of the fairy tale they believe in.
Confined · 56-60, M
If you had the vaccine, and you get covid, the hospital should turn you away.
There is no reason why a vaccinated person should take up a hospital bed. The vaccine was designed so you would not need to take up a bed. If the vaccine does not work then it should be recalled.
fddlpej · 61-69, M
@Confined i haven't heard that but it is true it is a long way from the 650000 that have died from covid don't you think?

fddlpej · 61-69, M

@fddlpej Actually I believe the number of vaccinated with breakthrough cases in the Mass is 1,207 people out of the 6,373 Covid cases. Looks like around 20% are breakthrough.

itsoeasy · 56-60, M
no, in uk the nhs treats everybody equally. doctors take the hypocratic oath they have ot preserve life, evn if the person ois metnally ill or even the enemy in war
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
The fact that this is being debated is an embarrassment to humankind.
fddlpej · 61-69, M
@jackjjackson lives are at risk. So maybe it should be debated
AurelieWilliams · 80-89, M
@fddlpej At last we agree on something. But there has been no debate. There has been no 'second opinion' allowed. Doctors with qualifications equal to Dr. Fauci et al. are denied a voice. If you're not in step with the NWO agenda, you are censored. Why? This has never happened in this country prior to Bush and Obama when the media started taking sides. I'm beginning to get the impression that the 'vaccine' wasn't created for covid, that covid was created for the vaccine. When I think of all the things that were done to run up the numbers in the beginning and now they're trying to hide the disparity and numbers of vaccinated hospitalizations and deaths . . . what other answer is there?
fddlpej · 61-69, M
@AurelieWilliams we had a president who disagreed with Fauci didn't we granted he was not a very smart man but he did convince a lot of people not to wear masks and not to get vaccinated even though he and his wife got vaccinated. I think he fooled his followers just like the ones who attacked the capital and Donnie said go on down to the capital and I will be right behind you then he sat and watched on TV. He never did show up for them fooled them again.
NotJamieM · 46-50, M
I'm not sure about that. Lots of people end up in the hospital for making what are viewed as dumb decisions. One example of this is someone who crashes their car while drunk driving. Heck, if go hiking and overestimate my abilities and break a leg on a harder trail, it could be argued that I was injured due to my own questionable decision making.
@NotJamieM According to those who say they have the freedom to not be vaccinated, shouldn't people also have the freedom to drive drunk?
fddlpej · 61-69, M
@NotJamieM yes but if you break your leg it would be a accident even if you are pushing yourself. The unvaccinated people have made a choice that not only affects them but possibly anyone else who they breathe on. You probably won't hurt anyone if you go to the hospital for a broken leg by breathing on them.
CestManan · 46-50, F
This whole argument bears a strong resemblance to segregation.

@Pitchblue I understand your frustration. I too would wish natural selection to prevail :P But I don't think hospitals should turn away patients.
@JimboSaturn Of course not. Someone should be responsible for overrunning hospitals. Responsible for the constant misinformation that made people believe COVID was a Hoax, no worse than the flu, that vaccines are killing more people than the virus, that Bill Gaetz was micro chipping people, etc, etc. Someone, some group of people should be responsible.

we are all God's children no matter how stupid we are (not saying that all anti-vaxxers are stupid) and our healthcare systems care about all of us. but of course its a great burden to the caregivers that could easily be prevented
I would say no because it is not just morons at risk. Some people with severe health issues for legit medical reasons can't get vaccinated so sending morons out into the wild is kind of just putting them at risk too.

Should hospitals also deny their help to drunk people who got themselves hurt due to their actions or should they ''just stay home and deal with that on their own''?
Should everyone be treated equal or should they make list of who gets a bed first? (You should know young people usually go up on those.)
My thought it you're being paranoid but I don't know whether your fear is justified.

Also, don't unvaccinated people get worse symptoms than vaccinated ones? Meaning, they might need help more?
The vaccines haven't been fully tested (and with anti-vax movement from a few years ago) they had to put it optional in most of the places. There is triage, when the hospitals are full so they have to choose who they'll cure but as long as there's a possibility in helping someone, should we deny them help?
Melpomene · 22-25, F
@independentone Interesting. And what about what I said in the first paragraph?
@independentone I love freedom and I might also be immune (recovered from GI covid in 5/20) and have the right to know if the vaccine will just be overkill or even counterindicated, and until I learn all about that I know I am ok now, no thanks to the system, and thats my choice so far.
@Elevatorpitches That is your choice, but I'm not sure I agree, I just don't ever want to be responsible for maybe passing it on to someone else.
pdockal · 56-60, M
So you'll start discriminating against people for personal choices ??? That's a slippery slope !
fddlpej · 61-69, M
@pdockal let me help you Reagan sold arms to Iran. Bush and Regan were involved in the Iran contra affair. Bush sr lied about Iraq pulling babies out of incubators. Bill Clinton had a affair and got impeached. W Bush attacked a country Iraq saying they had weapons of mass destruction. They didn't have them. Then Donald lied about so many things including covid that you couldn't keep up with him. Funny thing is they didn't have anything on Jimmy carter or Barack obama and after spending millions they got Bill Clinton for lying about having a affair which most married men would do and they impeached him. They did nothing to the Republicans except for trump because he was so blatantly lying. Yes I think there is a pattern there.

public hospitals cannot turn away any patient under law. private hospitals can turn away a patient in a non emergency situation. should be the end of discussion
fddlpej · 61-69, M
@saragoodtimes if the person has covid and hasn't had the vaccination because he has chosen not to get it then he should be last on the list regardless of his condition they have already been a threat to society and most of the non vaxxers are very smug about it. Let them be smug thinking about it as they watch the people who tried to do the right thing getting treatment. They should not get by without paying some kind of price for being smug and stupid. If they live they might get a little smarter and considerate of others.
@fddlpej so you're telling hospitals, doctors and staff to play God. when a patient shows my husband treats. he doesn't care about social status, race, color creed. insurance or ability to pay isn't a consideration health care is. after a patient is stabilized then my husband can make a decision whether he wants to be a patients doctor. all hospitals, staff and doctors here do the same
fddlpej · 61-69, M
@saragoodtimes there are plenty of patients right now and I want the ones who deserve the treatment to get it ahead of the ones who said the virus was fake. Let them see how real it is. They are the same kind of people who attacked the capital and tried to take my vote away from me. They don't care about what is right just what they want and if it was reversed they definitely wouldn't care about anyone else and would be far worse than I am.
