What TV show did your parents forbid you to watch growing up, and why?

dancingtongue · 80-89, M
Well, I was 14 before we had a TV and I was so involved in so many other activities I never watched much except with family at night since we had just the one TV. But to answer your question more broadly, my parents never forbade me to read, listen to, or watch anything. My mother, who was a teacher, did try to keep track of what I was, so she could discuss the things with me that she felt were perhaps beyond my age level to grasp. But both she and my father encouraged me to explore as widely as I wanted to gain a broad understanding of everything that interested me to prepare me for an ever-changing and multifaceted world.
There were none that I was forbidden to watch. But as a child I had a bedtime during the school year (9 pm) and no tv in my bedroom, so there were late shows I wouldn’t be able to watch, unless it was Friday or Saturday night. I watched the Twilight Zone, The Avengers and The Prisoner with Pop.

@bijouxbroussard we all watched TV together, as a family experience but school work and early bed time was the deciding factor
bowman81 · M
@bijouxbroussard Nothing really forbidden, but a curfew was enforced that eliminated a lot that might have been problematic if my folks found me watching them.
Punxi · F
Well my mom happened to glimpse Eric Cartman
" Milking a dog" on South Park....and my sister and I couldn't watch THAT again.
@Punxi red rocket
@Punxi I was already 37 when that show came out, and I thought it was too mature for me ! 😱
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
Pretty much all of them since my parents wouldn't have a TV in their house. I had one for a number of years after I moved out but I don't have one now. I haven't watched TV for over 10 years.
We didn't have a TV, my dad thought it was best, but on the week-ends we, my sisters and I would go to my grandparents house and they would let us watch SNL.
Matt85 · 36-40, M
i was allowed to watch most shows
someone even bought me ghoulies 2 on VHS when i asked for it
a dark and depraved yet funny, comedy-horror.
Adrift · 61-69, F
We usually had to go to bed at around nine o'clock so my dad would watch his detective shows in peace.
@Adrift I watch the reruns. I love Columbo.
Adrift · 61-69, F
@MsSwan I did too.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Adrift dragnet? Did you grow up in the US?
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
Not me but my nieces were forbidden to watch powerpuff girls. My cousin has ideas on what a proper well raised girl should be like.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Twilight Zone after the Werewolf looking through the airplane window while it was in flight. I had nightmares for weeks because of that episode.
chasingThursday · 41-45, M
They didn’t say anything about any TV shows but my mom flipped out when I got a Nintendo Power magazine in the mail that had Pokemon on the cover. She yelled at me saying it was evil and I didn’t even play Pokémon 🙄
Bignakedguy · 31-35, M
Get this… power rangers and teenage mutant ninja turtles! Those are the two shows I missed out in the 90s.

But I did watch big bad beetle borgs
exexec · 70-79, C
My parents controlled the TV. There was no remote, so somebody had to get up and move the dial to change channels. We kids did as we were instructed. Of course, we had only three channels, so the choices weren't great.
Lots of stuff. But for some reason I was finally allowed to watch a scandalous Sophia Loren movie called Two Women with them (and my older sister) one evening.

myotherlife · 61-69, M
I dont remember any forbidden shows, but we are talking 60s tv. But after my parents divorce in my late teens i remember dad watching a lot of Bennie Hill and Monty Python telling me " they show boobs".

Parents none. Babysitter though refused to let me watch dark shadows.

I wasn't religious of course.
Adrift · 61-69, F
@DeWayfarer I used to love to watch that show. Then I was afraid to go to bed.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Adrift oh it first aired in the afternoon. She just was too superstitious and religious.
MoveAlong · 70-79, M
When I grew up there was absolutely nothing on tv that kids couldn't view. We didn't even have a tv until I was six years old.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
SOOOO long ago, but when I was a little kid I think the wouldn't let me watch THE TWILIGHT ZONE when it was first on.
Casheyane · 31-35, F
Harry Potter lol
Not really forbidden but because there was a time we lived with "Christian" relatives who forbid their kids from watching anything witchcraft, my parents kind of jumped in that wagon too.

But yeah, I put the quotation marks because as it turned out, those relatives were the bad I don't even wanna talk about it kind of fakers.
Confined · 56-60, M
No restrictions. Even got to watch SNL.
FoxyQueen · 51-55, F
Speed Racer. My dad said it was too violent, but he let me watch Looney Tunes 🤷‍♀
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
Benny Hill it came on late and i have no idea why its not x rated or anything in my opinion the worst you would see is someone wearing lingerie
@AngelUnforgiven I remember being babysat by a very religious family at their house, trying to find something on tv to watch. I told them I really liked benny Hill, it was silly. They were soooo disgusted with my parents. I felt like I did something wrong.
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
@nonsensiclesnail exactly! Me too they acted like it was porno or something
@AngelUnforgiven I watched it a few years ago just to see it as an adult. It’s pretty dang tame by today’s standards. I mean, he’s a total creeper but it’s not very dirty.
Cigarguy101 · 41-45, M
My parents didn't let me watch much tv at all.
Anything after 8pm 😆
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
My mom hated Married With Children so we were never allowed to watch it.

@DearAmbellina2113 At about the time MARRIED WITH CHILDREN was making a big splash there was also THE COSBY SHOW; my wife was teaching 7th graders back then and the day after every COSBY episode aired they'd be in class complaining about being forced to watch it because their parents thought it was "family time" and felt a half hour of TV watching was a substitute of actually spending time with the kids.
iamthe99 · M
@ChipmunkErnie He was America's Dad. What a bitter, bitter disappointment. A bit like a guy called Rolf Harris over here in the UK.
HumanEarth · F
I could pretty much watch what was ever on Television. But we only had CBS, NBC, ABC, and PBS back then 4 channels was all we had
lostlissa · 36-40, F
My parents let us watch whatever we wanted
Nothing.
My parents had no idea what I did or did not watch.
sirweighsalot · 22-25, M
Spongebob because it was too inappropriate
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
The Blue Lagoon. No explanation why.

Funny thing. My parents let me watch all sorts of horror movies, and the video store in Oregon City had a note on our account that I was permitted to rent anything I wanted from that section, but sex? No, no nonononono! Can't watch that, kiddo. Go watch this movie where a guy gets decapitated instead.
MissingLink · 51-55, M
Nothing, we only 7 channels 🤣
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
We could watch anything we wanted
DDonde · 31-35, M
Power rangers lol
thepeculiarpanda · 36-40, M
Pretty much all of them. They were deep down the religious rabbit hole and convinced everything was too much of a bad influence.
iamthe99 · M
The Day of the Triffids. People walking about in plant suits was apparently too scary.
Elessar · 26-30, M
None

Y'all don't know freedom ⛓‍💥
GerOttman · 70-79, M
77 Sunset Strip

It had loose women in it!
MethDozer · M
