School in the good old days?
My grandmother and grandfather went to school in this schoolhouse. Can you imagine being stuck in there in the south Georgia heat, along with mosquitoes and gnats? My great-great grandfather built the school.
There's a snake in the kitchen!
I had just turned off the light to go to sleep when my wife yelled that alarm. It's not the first time we have had snaky visitors, so I got up to evict the intruder. Sure enough, there on the floor was the smallest snake I have ever seen, and I...

No Good Deed Goes Unpunished
Yesterday, I decided to help my kids by thinning out the family history files I have accumulated over the past 30 years and stored in a four-drawer metal file cabinet. I worked all day, tossing a kitchen trash bag full of paper out of the top...

Okay golf fans, who will win The Masters this year (2023)?
It's that time of year again, and I need your predictions.
Actor Who Played the Gill Man in "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" Dies
Ricou Browning, who did the underwater scenes in the Creature from the Black Lagoon series died at 93 last month. Those were some of the first horror movies I saw as a kid. I used to fish in a swamp lake that looked just like the Black Lagoon, so I...

Oops! Keyboard under water!
I fixed myself a nice pre-dinner drink and sat down at my computer. Some unseen force spilled my entire drink on my desk and keyboard. "Oh crap!" was the best I could do, so if anybody wants to curse for me, go ahead.
Anniversary of Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster
Today is the 20th anniversary of the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, when the orbiter broke up on reentry. I just drove by Space Center Houston, and the orbiter mockup sitting on the back of the 747 brought back some sad memories of that day and...

Just Got Home with a New Knee.
Knee replacement went well, and after a night in the hospital, I'm home. I'm ready for the fun of physical therapy!
Possum invasion thwarted
Our beagle/terrior mix was going nuts outside, so I went to check. There was a possum on the back fence. I shooed the invader away, but the puppy is convinced there must be many more out there. She won't stop barking and prowling the yard. Maybe...

It Feels Good When Someone Shows Sincere Appreciatiion
My wife and I were shopping at Sam’s yesterday when I heard a lady behind me say, “There’s a good-looking couple.” I turned to see a handicapped lady on an electric cart, and I recognized her as someone who comes to get food twice a month at the Foo...

Ribbon snake with his lunch
This snake lives in our day lily garden. I see it occasionally when it's out looking for food.
Puppy computer skills
I left my puppy in the office for just a few seconds. When I returned, the image on my monitor was upside down, and Daisy was trying to look innocent, knowing she isn't allowed on the desk. How did she learn keyboard shortcuts so young?
Who will win The Masters this year?
Are there any golf fans who will venture a guess?
Friends I Saw on Today's Walk
I don't know if they are old or new friends because they weren't wearing name-tags.
Thank you...Whoever made this style of formal dress obsolete
It was hard enough getting her into the car. Anything else was almost impossible.
I made some new friends on my walk today
Letters from Our College Days
I just found a box of letters that my wife and I wrote each other when we were dating in college over 40 years ago. We could only talk on the phone twice a week and saw each other once or twice a month. The letters were our primary means of...

Would somebody please turn off the hurricane machine?
Tropical Storm Delta just formed and will be heading into the Gulf of Mexico. It may be a hurricane when it hits coastal U.S. We really don't need another one this year!
I Had a Nice Dream Last Night
I had a vivid dream of our high school days. My high school girlfriend (wife of 40 years) and I were eating lunch together in the cafeteria. The other characters around us were from different stages of life: college and current friends. The...

My good deed of the day
I was mowing the lawn and found a young 'possum with his head stuck in our fence. I had to use a hammer to free the board to get the animal free. It played dead while I carried it by the tail to a spot by the creek. A few minutes later, he/she...

I Love the Outdoors and Nature
I can't grow anything, but these amaryllis seem to be thriving and need to be thinned a bit.
I Love Handwritten Letters
I am trying to read letters written by my great-grandmother in 1906, and I'm getting eye-strain. They are written in light pencil on cheap paper that has turned brown. I just read that she was dreading Oct 15 when her daughter would become a...

I Love Afternoon Naps
I would love to have an afternoon nap, but my old dog insists on sleeping near me, and she snores so loudly that I can't sleep. I shut her out of the bedroom at night so everybody can sleep.
I Like the Sound of Rain
I do like to listen to the rain, but 9 inches of rain in the last 24 hours is enough! You can turn off the rain faucets anytime!
I Love The Heat Of Summer
...but this is ridiculous for the first day of summer. Heat index (feels like) over 100 degrees by 10:00 this morning, and I will be working outside, no shade, on pavement from 11:00 until 3:00. Bring on the water and Gatorade!
