There's a snake in the kitchen!

I had just turned off the light to go to sleep when my wife yelled that alarm. It's not the first time we have had snaky visitors, so I got up to evict the intruder. Sure enough, there on the floor was the smallest snake I have ever seen, and I have been catching snakes all my life. It was clearly harmless, although I couldn't make a positive identification. I picked it up, took it outside, and released it. At least it didn't bite me like the big water snake did a few years ago when I had to grab it before it disappeared behind some heavy furniture.

Over the years gave seen about thirty in the garden. This is south east England.

The occasional adder in the garden. We have to be careful.

Loads of grass snakes which are harmless. On got into my water but, I think my neighbour threw it over. I fished it out and saved it.

A corn snake in my pond, harmless, had been someone’s pet that they did not want.

Slow worms, that are actually lizards.

I lived in another part of the country in my youth in rural England. Only ever saw one there.

I have had a few snakes in our country cabin, pythons, tree snakes, a deadly eastern brown and a black snake that slithered over my legs one hot summer night and shed its skin at the end of the bed.

@Ozdharma You folks have do many venomous snakes that it amazes me that more people don't die from snakebite there.
