Well, I was 14 before we had a TV and I was so involved in so many other activities I never watched much except with family at night since we had just the one TV. But to answer your question more broadly, my parents never forbade me to read, listen to, or watch anything. My mother, who was a teacher, did try to keep track of what I was, so she could discuss the things with me that she felt were perhaps beyond my age level to grasp. But both she and my father encouraged me to explore as widely as I wanted to gain a broad understanding of everything that interested me to prepare me for an ever-changing and multifaceted world.
