After school dance club started again last Thursday

Nigel Farage condemns anti-immigration protestors in Dover and Portsmouth who cover their faces

Apparently dressing up in black and donning a balaclava while yiu attack police officers is a little "un-British" 😬 Of course, conspiring to conceal the origins of a foreign political donation is a different matter altogether according to Nigel "I... See More »

A study in ineffective altruism

In 2020, American households earning more than $500K pa claimed more than half the income-tax rebates available for charitable giving. In 2026 these are likely to cost in the region of $70bn (roughly equivalent to the GDP of Alaska). There is scant... See More »

Sleeping soundly

Ever since she came to live with us four years ago, I have checked my eldest daughter shortly after she goes to sleep. This is not mere self-indulgence. She tends to bunch up the duvet and pillows around her face and it worries me that she will... See More »

Our daughter received her exam results by text on Thursday during our family camping holiday in Exmoor. She got 4s in English, Maths and Science (x 2) and a 1 in PE - comfortably enough to start her apprenticeship - and a merit for her vocational... See More »

Yesterday afternoon we went to support our eldest daughter in her last ever sports day. While most of the girls were happily engaged in fun, not-at-all competitive challenges and races, our daughter of course chose to play in a rugby 7s tournament 😬... See More »

Happy Independence Day!

Laws of physics remain undisturbed

Our teenager wants to celebrate the end of her exams (and her school career) with a sleepover at our home this weekend. Just a quiet affair with 17 of her closest friends 😳 My gently expressed reservation that her room and bed may not be up to the ch... See More »

Breaking news . . .

Apparently Elon Musk is being lined up to play a trans Helen of Troy in Christopher Nolan's new version of The Odyssey 😃 https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c242d9472dqo

I received a panicked text from my daughter at school yesterday telling me that she had lost her PE kit. Normally I would be tempted to ignore this, as I must have done on the 132 previous occasions that she thought she had forgotten or mislaid her... See More »

My teenager is muttering darkly to herself in the Time Out corner

She has declared herself to be "very disappointed" that I won't unilaterally lift the grounding imposed on her by my wife yesterday. Not half as "disappointed" as I am to be stuck indoors with a grumpy teenager 😅 Back to school on Monday 😌
