Sunshinegirl calls for a complete ban on double-breasted suits
Sunshinegirl has called for a ban on all double-breasted suits in Britain after hundreds of wide boy grifters and upper class twits carried out migrant boat protests in Birmingham.
The highly uninfluential social media commentator described the coverings as a 'menace' designed to bully and intimidate, whether worn by far right or hard left agitators.
She added that the sight of an ordinary citizen crossing the road to avoid a formal suited figure would have been 'unimaginable' a generation ago.
It came after a huge crowd of men donning all-turquoise outfits and brogues brought Britain's second city to a standstill on Saturday morning.
Anti-migrant demonstrators were heard chanting 'stop the boats' and 'a triple G&T, my good man' while blocking pavements to and from the public bar in Birmingham's Burlington Hotel.
And overnight on Sunday, official vehicles were damaged and police officers were injured during a stand-off with red-faced protesters in the Westminster area of London after staff attempted to close the members' bar.
Hard-Right organisation Reform UK - run by part time Kermit-the-Frog impersonator Nigel Farage - claimed responsibility for the demonstrations.
Sunshinegirl told The Telegraph: 'Now, I'm all for the protest - plenty to protest about - but seriously this is not the way to go about it.
'Let's be clear, body coverings are a menace. Whether it is a heavy-duty Barbour jacket worn by a celebrity 'farmer' or the light blue suit of 'Reformer' extremists, their purpose is to bully and intimidate.'
She added: 'We are calling for a ban on all finely tailored upper torso coverings in public spaces. No ifs, no buts. And yes, that includes religious ones too.
'Because a free and open society depends fundamentally on trust. That trust is built on a simple, ancient social contract: I show you my tax return, you show me yours. When you strip that away, the entire fabric of public safety and mutual trust begins to fray.'
In a fiery interview on Saturday night, Sunshine dubbed the protest 'disgusting', insisting that 'nobody in any political protest, left or right, should be appearing in a three piece suit'.
Farage, an associate of right-wing activist Donald Trump who uses the nickname "The Donald", confronted Sunshine in Bristol and said the legendary actuarist should be 'careful with her words'.
Only a day after hard-Right protestors caused havoc in Birmingham, several hundred took to the Palace of Westminster in a bid to drain 140 casks of real ale.
The bar staff had earlier arrived on a bus from Braintree, with the Essex police shadowing the vessel until the Met took over.
This whole face covering thing is a can of worms. You could reasonably ban all face coverings except for faith based ones and ones necessary for medical reasons but then people could conceivably claim to be of a specific faith or to have a medical condition whilst really just intent on hiding their identity. You could specifically allow exact types of faith based face coverings and only allow medical face coverings when accompanied by a doctor's note, but then could you stop a person from wearing a faith based face covering when not of that faith? Could you verify their faith on the spot? So it's almost easier to just allow face coverings of any kind except for very specific circumstances and if being used whilst committing a crime. I'm not sure that "You seem intimidating" holds up as a reason to ban face coverings that can be applied consistently.
It's true that protestors on both sides of the political divide have worn face coverings for the most likely reason of not being identified, but then if they're not committing any crime then should there be any law against it? Intimidating people willingly and actively, via threatening behaviour or words, is clearly grounds for police intervention. Being intimidating by nature of being male, masked and in a group is subjective. I've been in a position once myself where I was asked to leave a public space because I was in a large group. Local shopkeepers were concerned, I was told. No crimes had been committed or were going to be. No aggressive or threatening behaviour was occurring. There had been recent trouble with youths in that particular place but we were not connected to that. We were moved on just because we fit a profile. People were intimidated because of their own insecurities rather than our actions. That's a slippery slope if you ask me.
So I don't think that you can reasonably ban all face coverings and I don't think that it's easy to apply the rules selectively either. It's more down to what you're actually doing at the time, not what you might do or what people think you might do.
@InfoTunaBotTheReturn Thanks for your detailed and thoughtful response. Context is everything and what is interpreted as threatening behaviour is highly subjective and should not be acted upon at face value . . some older people report being intimidated by noisy children, but that is not a good reason to ban unsupervised play in public places.
What chills me is Farage's conflation of actual thuggery and disorder with the right of women to wear face coverings for cultural reasons. And I am depressed that at least three national newspapers printed his opinions verbatim with no critical analysis.
@SunshineGirl I fully agree with you. What he's doing is trying to enforce a ban that he's always wanted to enforce by making it look like it's fair for everyone. He knows that the impact to your average non Muslim person is minimal and the impact to Muslim women of faith is widespread. I don't see Reform in it's current state getting into power though, I think they've blown it. That's not to say that they ever would have gotten across the line but now they're further away than they were. They're scoring spectacular own goals and a lot of their core support is splintering off to Restore, who themselves have zero chance of getting into power in their current form.
I was so outraged when I read this that I was lost for...you know...those things that we use to talk.
Then the truth hit me. Sunshine may be a woman, but she speaks sense. So I took my double breasted suits - all 10 - and set fire to them. I no longer want to be associated with oppression and causing others fear. Time to demonstrate in a flame- buoyant way that I am a changed man.
Unfortunately my epiphany, has come at a cost and my home has burnt down: I am now homeless. I should have taken the suits out of the wardrobe first. 😵💫
