Robert Jenrick attacks Prime Minister over made-up tax

Robert Jenrick, UK Reform's spokesperson for the Treasury, held a press conference on Wednesday to attack PM Andy Burnham's "extreme death tax" to fund social care for the elderly. He conjured a terrifying vision of "tax inspectors with clipboards" descending upon the bedrooms of the sick and dying to seize property and estates. They even have their eyes on the heirloom brooch that granny had promised her granddaughter.

Stirring stuff. Apart from the fact that the tax is a figment of Jenrick's over-active imagination and does not exist. He is sore that Reform UK was not invited to cross-party talks held by the PM on how to fund social care (one reason for the non-invitation being that their leader Nigel Farage has resigned his seat in parliament).

Meanwhile Jenrick evaded or ignored six questions from journalists about the sources of his party's funding, including the £5m "gift" made to Farage by a Thailand based billionaire.

Reform UK. Telling it like it isn't!

Remember he was nearly the Tory leader.

@peterlee He was a pretty useless government minister too. Had a huge conflict of interest as Housing Minister when he illegally fast tracked a major planning application days before a new infrastructure levy came into force, saving the developer millions of pounds.

@SunshineGirl I'd forgotten about that scandal. He's just awful.

@peterlee That horror avoided.

Is the UK ever going to have a PM for a full term?
peterlee · M
@zonavar68 In my lifetime: Wilson, Heath, Thatcher, Major, Blair, Cameron.

He has a very unpleasant view of the world and people. When even the Conservative Party isn't right wing enough for someone (and Badenock has dragged it further that way) you know they are moving towards unhinged.

@FreddieUK To be fair, he was less thin-skinned and passively aggressive than his leader. But I can't stand the make believe stuff. This instance may seem harmless enough. It won't be when they start talking about migrants again.
