Sleeping soundly

Ever since she came to live with us four years ago, I have checked my eldest daughter shortly after she goes to sleep. This is not mere self-indulgence. She tends to bunch up the duvet and pillows around her face and it worries me that she will over-heat or suffocate.

Last night I tiptoed into her room as usual to find her completely hidden from view beneath a mountain of duvet. I gently rearrange the bedclothes so her mouth and nose are clear and pause briefly to contemplate her dreams. Later this week she starts college and her apprenticeship, a big first step into the adult world of work.

Then I check on her younger sister who will be starting secondary school in a few days time. She sleeps neatly on her back, rabbit tucked into the crook of one arm. No rearranging needed in this bedroom! She is a little apprehensive about going to big school, but in her sleep with no one to bother her she seems perfectly serene.

Bedtime checks over, our big week can commence 😌

That is so sweet. But still two reasons to have to steel your nerves for the weeks ahead.
