What is your favorite type of food?

Okay, so I do love me some good Italian. And I mean Italian, not the Americanized Italian we get here. And Spanish Tapas!! Omg, I can sit there all day and nibble. Don't get me started on Turkish Kebabs! Yum.

Here are the global favs ... What are yours??

MommyLucy · 36-40, F
I absolutely LOVE chicken and ketchup sandwiches! 🥪🥪🥪 Reason is nostalgia because in childhood school meals I found were unhealthy so my parents did me sandwiches in a lunch box every day in school and I absolutely HATE mayonnaise (my worst food ever is mayonnaise) but every day in school my mom did me my favourite sandwich which was chicken and ketchup sandwiches! 😁😁😁 Me and two of my three kids eat chicken and ketchup sandwiches for tea or lunch about four times a week! 😌😌😌 All you need is bread, a little butter, add tomato ketchup and some chicken and cut sandwich into squares or triangles! 🥪🥪🥪 My favourite food ever is chicken and ketchup sandwiches and my favourite drink is milk and I LOVE hot chocolate too! 🥛🥛🥛

@MommyLucyYou're younger than me.
I would fall on my head.
MommyLucy · 36-40, F

@MommyLucy That's great. Enjoy every day. 🤗

Ooh Indonesia is represented! Ayam grepek for the win!
Looks good! @sarabee1995
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@Longpatrol Let us know how it was. Take some pics. ;)
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
@sarabee1995 As long as the chilli 🌶 in the Sambal sauce is 🔥. Had it many times in Lovina and Singaraja. Not the tourist version either 🤣
It all depends on the quality we can get locally. We can get great Italian food and prepare it at home. We can get great Mexican, (and I mean enchiladas & tamales, not just Tex-Mex). We can also have a great Indian restaurant nearby; lots of exotic delicacies. And there's a place not too far away with great felafal, hummus, and tabbouleh sandwiches stuffed into pita bread. This meal depends on good pita bread that holds up; the combo is delicious. And sushi -- let's not forget sushi!!
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@ElwoodBlues I wouldn't mind forgetting sushi. I've had it, several times while on group dinners when that was the group choice. It's never been on my list of preferred foods.
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
I’m making Persian food tonight, braised chicken with sour plums, potatoes, carrots and grape tomatoes. And saffron rice to go with it and a salad. I love nearly all of the Persian food I’ve had, it can be sweet and savory at the same time. Persian kebabs are really good too. I also love Thai food, Indian food and American foods too.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@cherokeepatti I had some heavily Persian-influenced food when I was visiting Baku in Azerbaijan. I had one meal that sounds exactly like what you described above with the braised chicken with all the sides. Everything was laid out before us and you just picked what you wanted from the table. Very communal style of eating.
The food I ate in Holland was the best.
@sarabee1995 Normal, ordinary food like milk, eggs, veggies. Everything is very high quality and their national supermarket, the Albert Heijn, is a joy to shop in. Whatever cuisine I made from the food, it was wonderful. Even the pet food is better than everywhere else.
That being said, I remember a ready to eat kind of meal with potatoes and meat, usually a sausage, called "stoompot", just a Euro or two for a great meal. Even the potatoes are extra good.
And the cheese! I could talk forever about the cheese...
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@Roundandroundwego Nice. I've been to the Netherlands a couple of times, but don't recall seeing or trying Stoompot. I will for sure next time. :)
@sarabee1995 I looked into Google, and it said my misspelling of "stampoot" (I swear I heard "stoompot"!)is very common, I bet you would always find it in the Albert Heijn, anyway. I like to heat it up in a casserole dish with cubes of "oude kaas", old cheese, until the cheese melts.
Stephie · 22-25, F
I was fortunate enough to sample the majority of those cuisines abroad and not in my home country.

There is quite a difference in taste when you are able to eat those local dishes directly in the country and preferably not in touristic areas where you cannot (or rarely) eat the real local cuisine.

I always have a smile on my face when I hear those tourists from the New World making a comment about the pizza they eat in a real pizzeria somewhere in Italy because they only get a thin crust pizza and not the Super Supreme from Pizza Hut with the cheese crust. What tops it is when they put 🧊 in the 🍷 of Chianti red wine ☺

Sorry for the edit. I forgot to list my favorite dish. It will be Greek food or Spanish food from the Mediterranean coast because you can still find the fresh catch of the day, although...

... In parts of Greece, you cannot find local fish anymore because it has been overfished and the fishermen have to go to the North African coast to get that fish.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@Stephie Yes, getting the local flavor for any of these is important. That's one of the best things I loved about traveling so much in my prior jobs.

I am completely with you on fresh caught local seafood in Spain. It was there that I first tasted octopus and it was amazing. Then, long after I had an opportunity to try it again, but this time in Boston. 🤦‍♀ It was so bad. Preparation and freshness are so important with some foods.
exexec · 70-79, C
American soul food
exexec · 70-79, C
@sarabee1995 I'm one of those rare people who doesn't like mac and cheese.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@exexec Blasphemy!!!!!
exexec · 70-79, C
@sarabee1995 My wife agrees
akindheart · 70-79, F
yes i had real Turkey kabobs when i went. i love all foreign food except Indian and chinese.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@akindheart Yeah, the open mind to new tastes is important but in the end we like what we like. I've endure many meals I thought sounded good only to find out it just wasn't for me. A few of those have been within Indian cuisine. I think that one in particular and maybe a few others are "acquired tastes".
emiliya · 26-30, F
@akindheart I like Indian. But also not a fan of Chinese. Why is that so popular?
akindheart · 70-79, F
@emiliya Indian is really popular over here. i love chinese over here but it is really bland in China....
faery · F
My favorites are Mexican and Japanese
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@faery Never had authentic Japanese other than sushi (which I'm not a fan of). But yeah, Mexican can be so good. :)
Casheyane · 31-35, F
Lately, I find myself enjoying Mexican food a lot.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@Casheyane No doubt! It can be so good when done right. :)
Jenny1234 · 56-60, M
My fav isnt on that list. I just love Afghani food.

From your list, I’ll go with Japan
Jenny1234 · 56-60, M
@samueltyler2 I will try one day
Jenny1234 · 56-60, M
@sarabee1995 it’s delish. Think kebobs or pieces of meat in top of basmati rice With the most flavourful seasonings. I love the chicken kebabs.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@Jenny1234 Sounds awesome!

GoFish ·

Cigarguys · 41-45, C
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@Cigarguys Who doesn't love some spicy Mexican on occasion. It's not tops on my list, but it's on my list! :)
StygianKohlrabi · 46-50, M
Portugese is actually underrated. The seafood is so good there I may as well move there.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@StygianKohlrabi Nice. I will have to seek it out someday. :)
MommyLucy · 36-40, F
I'll also add I LOVE McDonald's Happy Meals for the toys! 🥳🥳🥳 No mayonnaise in the Happy Meal burgers and you get a toy as well so a win-win for sure! 😁😁😁

sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@pdockal Lol, tell me about it!!! I currently have two "jobs" and I'm in school.
pdockal · 56-60, M
@sarabee1995

Gotchya
Straylight · F
I think I love all of them. I lean towards spicy, so Mexican and Indian definitely. But I have a weakness for pasta, so Italian would be my top pick.
Straylight · F
@sarabee1995 I guess Cajun food is just regular food to me. 😆 But yes, gumbo, jambalaya, not so much boudin. I would fight someone for a fried shrimp poboy. 😂
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@Straylight I've never had authentic Cajun food. I've had make-believe gumbos and stuff like that but not ever in Bayou country or anywhere near it. I would love to try a fried shrimp poboy!! (Of course, only assuming there was more than enough for you too!!!)
Straylight · F
@sarabee1995 I really must cook for you.
th3r0n · 41-45, M
I think the first is either steak or Alfredo or steak with Alfredo sauce on it, after that might be lamb rolled in grape leaves
Gusman · 61-69, M
I do love Indian Lamb Stuffed Parathas, also Biryani.
Italian Lasagne
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@Gusman

Indian lamb stuffed parathas, or keema parathas, are flaky, pan-fried flatbreads filled with spiced ground lamb. They are typically made by sealing cooked, minced lamb inside dough made from whole wheat flour (atta), then rolling it out and searing in ghee. Served hot with yogurt or pickles, they are a savory, popular meal.

Interesting. I've never tried it but it sounds like it could be good.
Gusman · 61-69, M
@sarabee1995 Give them a go sometime. Very tasty, spicy hot accompanied with Raita.
@sarabee1995 No, it's not
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@0uijaFinger Good to know. I'll try some more Greek when I get the chance. :)
emiliya · 26-30, F
@sarabee1995 I love feta. Greek food is delicious.
Steak!! Nice & RARE!!!!
Oh! And barbecued ANY MEAT!!!!
@sarabee1995 I don't know about most restaurants, I cook mine myself. That way I'm assured I get it the way I like it.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@RockinPop54 Wow, so you cook an entire prime rib at home? Is this when you have a lot of people over? And, how do I get invited??
@sarabee1995 I'm not rich. I'm only on Social Security. I get a small roast when they're on EXTREME sale!
I don't get it often, so I make it COUNT when I do get one!!
MommyLucy · 36-40, F
Nothing beats a plate of chicken and ketchup sandwiches to share with my kids while watching Disney animated movies in the living room! 💙🥪💙🥪💙🥪💙🥪💙🥪
@MommyLucy Everybody has their preferences. I prefer my steak VERY rare!! Barely cooked at all! Others want theirs burnt beyond recognition! HAHA! (For me that's anything over medium rare).
MommyLucy · 36-40, F
@RockinPop54 I don't mind my steak rare either! 😌😌😌 I usually go for medium well but I can eat rare steak no problem too! 😁😁😁
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@MommyLucy Chicken and ketchup is a rare combination for sure! But I'm glad you have something you like.
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
I never knew your wife was Italian. 😅
tindrummer · M
Spanish - tapas and paella.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@tindrummer Speaking my language. I love tapas! Have you ever had paella made with rabbit?? I did once on my trip to Spain.
tindrummer · M
@sarabee1995 Have not. Sounds good.
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@vetguy1991 Of course!
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@meggie Seems to be a popular response!
emiliya · 26-30, F
Mediterranean, which includes Levantine
This comment is hidden. Show Comment
Stephie · 22-25, F
@emiliya It seems that some people here lack the most basic geographic knowledge. It would have been so easy to check the meaning of "Levantine" online but instead, downvoting seems to be the better option for this angry and opinionated gentleman.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@Stephie I was going to say the same thing.

"The Levant is a historical geographical term denoting the eastern Mediterranean region of Western Asia, comprising modern-day Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Israel, Jordan, and often Iraq. Major cities include Aleppo, Damascus, Beirut, Amman, and Jerusalem. Primarily Muslim, the region features diverse communities, with Arabic as the dominant language."

But some people ... 🤷‍♀
within · 36-40, M
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@within Seems to be the most popular response here. And for good reason. I love Italian food.
Jexie · 26-30, F
Italian is my go-to
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@Jexie Yeah, same here. It's my fav, but I'm always trying to broaden my tastes.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@AthrillatheHunt Well, yeah, I love fruit but I don't think you can live just on fruit. Right?
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@sarabee1995 I would never attempt it. Love my carbs and proteins too much.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Romani! 🙃 Yet that's a combination of countries. Mostly South East European.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@DeWayfarer Interesting...

Romani cuisine is characterized by hearty, inexpensive, and flavorful dishes, often featuring paprika, garlic, and bell peppers, frequently cooked in stews or over open fires. Staple ingredients include potatoes, cabbage, rice, and chicken, lamb, or pork, with a strong focus on utilizing portable ingredients and slow-cooking methods to create nourishing meals.

Other than a good goulash, I'm not sure I've had much that would qualify as Romani.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@sarabee1995

This was my mother's favorite to make. It includes most on your list plus a few other things not mentioned. She really was Romani herself.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@DeWayfarer Looks yummy.
Ferric67 · M
Greek 👍🏅
And that’s not me being biased, that’s me being real
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@Ferric67 Why? Are you Greek?
JoyfulSilence · 51-55, M
@sarabee1995

I like Chinese.

But I have never asked for cheese on my Chinese!
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@JoyfulSilence Mmmm ... I do love our Americanized Chinese, but it's my understanding that it's not really anything like what they eat over there. I want to try authentic Chinese someday.
JoyfulSilence · 51-55, M
@sarabee1995

Oh, I have no idea what is real or not. I just go to local spots.

I should ask my boss. He was born and raised in China.
TheRealBarbossa · 36-40, T
Veggies and pasta
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@TheRealBarbossa Cool. And valid. We all see the world through our own eyes. :)
TheRealBarbossa · 36-40, T
@sarabee1995 absolutely. And as much as I wish food and fur animals were treated better and whatnot, I made a concious choice not to be one of those preachy pescetarians. I don't like having religion, lifestyles, etc pushed on me, so I wouldn't wanna do that to others either.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@TheRealBarbossa Agreed. I do like talking about these subjects, but try to always do so in a way not to sound judgy or proselytizing. But I like learning about how others think and see the world. :)
CleverGirl · 26-30, FNew
Meat, potatoes and vegetables.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@CleverGirl Lol, I'm descended mostly from English, Irish, and German genes ... I can't argue with this answer! ;)
Italian pasta and calzone.
We love Portuguese food at home. My fave would be carne alentejana and caldo verde anytime.
I’ve recently discovered Turkish food and loved it.
Indonesian food - I would visit every few years just to enjoy the food there.
@samueltyler2
Yes. I agree with you on the similarities.
I discovered Iraq food a few months ago. Loved it, specially the rice and meat dishes.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@CookieCrumbs I will. I haven't ever been to Portugal. I've been to neighboring Spain, but never to Portugal.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@sarabee1995 some of the "street food" in Portugal are amazing.
KiwiBird · 36-40, F
I don't have a favourite per se....
I tend to eat local if travelling....Tapas in Madrid, Moussaka, Souvlaki, Gyros in Greece etc. Here....fresh seafood. Tuna, Oysters, Prawns Crab etc...and Kangaroo Steak. Indian is my go to for cooking. Love my Indonesian, Malay and Thai food way too many dishes to mention but have travelled extensively throughout those countries.
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@KiwiBird Well local is always the way to go when seeing new places for the first time. You know I spent some time in Istanbul and that's when I discovered Turkish food. So so yummy!

I've not yet had much exposure to Southeast Asian or Oceanic cuisine but you make it sound quite intriguing! 😉
AtlasScar · 31-35, MNew
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@AtlasScar Well, yes, there are some great places around here serving Pho. I just don't know how "authentic" they are.
AtlasScar · 31-35, MNew
@sarabee1995 Good point. I’d recommend a really good Mediterranean restaurant near me, but for the life of me, I don’t remember the name of it lol
Fried chicken made with an iron skillet
sarabee1995 · 31-35, F
@jackjjackson Oh you'd never get me to turn away from a good fried chicken.

How do you make it?
Completely dry chicken parts. Dredge in flour. Cook in 350 degree cotton seed oil in well seasoned iron skillet until golden brown. Review carefully with tongs. Let dry off on a stack of paper towels. @sarabee1995
