if i'm all out of valium? I usually grab a weighted blanket, and a snug beanie/hat the weight and pressure help my panic attacks usually.
SW-User
@UnholyTranquility Great idea, thanks

@Dino11 Yes, I was only briefly confused.
Dino11 · M
@bijouxbroussard You're forgiven

Whenever I have a panic attack, I put a brown paper bag over my mouth … and drink the bottle of vodka inside … It seems to help...
SW-User
@Midnightoker1 Oh, I never thought of that. Thank you
@Midnightoker1 oh fk!
I've been doing it all wrong!🤣
For panic attacks I took drugs, prescribed for my cptsd. I had it and other very serious manifestations of traumas,
this had to be gotten under control STAT.
I had a young child and a life to build.

Anxiety attacks...You can try breathing in and out for twice+ longer( your exhalation must be longer m as this will help activate your parasympathetic nervous system).
Also, tactile distractions:i.e various rocks in your hands. You're directing your attention here.
And occasionally as a quick fix (it's not a fix but, as I am not a drinker), a sip of liquour, as it's a depressant.
@LunadelobosIAMTHEDRAGON For PTSD, access EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing).
You can read Getting Past your Past by Francine Shapiro. Francine discovered EMDR by accident, then tested it it. The more thoroughly it was tested with thousands of people, the more the results were confirmed. It works thoroughly and very quickly (within about 10 sessions) for 96% of clients. It has proved itself far more effective than any other treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This include vicarious trauma, and traumas from the mildest to the most severe and long term.

The book is probably in your local library or they can buy it for you.
It's important to read the book first and then find someone who is properly trained in the technique.

I'm doing it myself now and getting huge benefits.
@hartfire I can try it. Good that it helps many.
For example, tapping did absolutely nothing for me.

Thank you.
SW-User
@hartfire I've had EMDR therapy. It's brilliant. ❤️
SW-User
Cold shower, cold water on my wrists, a cold ice packet on my chest or head.. Basically something cold to shock my system.. If I have anything sour, I eat that.. Breath.. And if nothing works, panic lol..
SW-User
@SW-User For sure 🤣 Thank you
SW-User
@SW-User Hope it helps😌
Hatt94 · 56-60, MVIP
I don't get them personally. But I know people that do.

Try this.
First, look around you.
Find 5 things you can see.
Then 4 things you can touch.
Then 3 things you can hear
Then 2 things you can smell.
And finally 1 thing you can taste.

It calms you down. Grounds you.
SW-User
@Hatt94 Very good advice, thank you
@Hatt94 Yes. This is one thing that a therapist said.
SW-User
I have called the front desk of a hotel just to hear a person’s voice while having one alone with my son. I just lay down, breathe and find anyone to talk to.
SW-User
I need someone else to help me calm down, I can’t get myself out of them
SW-User
@SW-User You got that right, good conversation keeps things calm. Thank you
bookerdana · M
Short term:breathe into a paper bag,which stops hyper ventilation;long term ,meditation
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@bookerdana Yes, I've known a couple of people that paper bag idea worked for.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
I don't think I ever had one but for the "thing" I experienced a few times I usually do the correct breathing and try to focus on some object really hard and take my mind away from physical symptoms inside.
SW-User
@CrazyMusicLover I heard of that before, thanks a lot
throughTheMotions · 51-55, M
I don't know if this is the most practical advice, but it worked for me. I struggled with panick attacks for periods of my life. I decided to go out and engage in life more, tried new activities, found events and social circles to get involved in. Forced myself to smile and looked for ways to help others. Basically I tried to make the most of my life. Eventually my panic subsided.
SW-User
@throughTheMotions Glad it helped, thank you
SW-User
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout Relax, slow breaths, meditate. Just what the doctor ordered. Thank you
SW-User
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout @SW-User Honestly just stop overreacting, it's fine..
SW-User
@SW-User Thank you, my mind sure can use a tune up
HannahSky · F
I don't get panic attacks but I know shifting your energy helps. People try not to be too active during them, but moving your body helps shift that anxiety.
SW-User
@HannahSky Good point. Thank you
HannahSky · F
@SW-User hope you're ok
SW-User
@HannahSky Yes, I will be. Thank you for being so kind :)
When my heart starts pounding I stop breathing to the count of 6, inhale over 6 seconds, stop breathing, exhale over 6 seconds or so, assess if my heart beats slower, and repeat until I calm down.
SW-User
@SoulKey deep and slow breathing seems to help
revenant · F
I had to learn to change my thinking.

"You cannot obey 2 or more masters". In the end you have to choose YOU and the hell with everything else if they are in conflict.
SW-User
@revenant I can remember that, thank you
revenant · F
@SW-User easy to say but not as easy to apply unfortunately.
SW-User
@revenant Very true :)
itsok · 31-35, F
First take propranolol. Then depending on whether I feel a panic attack coming or I’m actually having one, it differs some.
Find stuff to ground me. Breathing techniques, talking to someone, watching a cartoon. I have a box of small toys and activities for panic attacks (I call it my sad box). Sh.
SW-User
@itsok Great ideas, thank you so much. I will definitely consider those
SW-User
Breathing! It’s the only thing that works
SW-User
@SW-User That's what I heard too :)
SW-User
@SW-User hope it has passed now, Anxiety attacks are horrible
SW-User
@SW-User I truly believe that. It doesn't happen often, but when it does, you definitely know it. Thanks so much for the suggestions
SW-User
I get in the dark and meditate. Or take a shower. Whatever helps me until it passes.
SW-User
@SW-User I heard that is what helps others. It is nice to know I am not alone
SW-User
@SW-User No you aren't .
Whodunnit · M
I drink loads of caffeine and worry about things.

Oh... You want to STOP them?
SW-User
@Whodunnit That worked, appreciate the humor
Cigarguy101 · 41-45, M
Whiskey and a cigar. A cheap one because i am breathing hard so they go fast
Vin53 · M
Meds can help immensely for panic attacks.
SW-User
@Vin53 Thanks for the help
Breathe at least ten deep breaths with a paper bag over the mouth.
The carbon dioxide is calming.
(Keep paper bag on hand at all times.)
SW-User
@hartfire Will do
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
I take very deep breaths and if possible, remove myself from the area that is making me panic.
SW-User
@DearAmbellina2113 Appreciate the assistance with this
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Scream while running in circles?
SW-User
@ChipmunkErnie One foot nailed to the floor as we speak. Hope I don't get too dizzy lol
HowtoDestroyAngels · 46-50, M
I've been on medication for panic attacks for close to twenty years now. I rarely get them anymore, but fear that if I stop taking the medication they will start back up.
Vin53 · M
I find the benefits of it, my treatment, outweighs the risk of side effects, of which I've had none to date.

@HowtoDestroyAngels
revenant · F
I remember something which helped somewhat. I like concrete stuff lol
beat yourself under each armpit 9 times each
beat the inside of your elbows 9 times each
then clap your hands together 9 times

It is from Tai Chi
SW-User
@revenant Yes, I remember this well. Also, nine swallows of water helps too. Or so I've heard
Vin53 · M
My panic attacks were I would jump off 3rd floor of the mall by an insane sudden zest to kill myself.
I’m not sure I’ve ever had one.
SW-User
@bijouxbroussard Most people don't I have heard
i accept death as complete peace and relax

It sucks
