It doesn't annoy me but i have heard of other people who were annoyed by that..
DoubleRings · 51-55, F
My hubby does this all the time like he’s suddenly BFFs with someone. If someone introduces themselves as David, it’s David not Dave. when he met my cousin stephen he immediately called him steve. He’s never ever been a “steve” So embarassing.
DoubleRings · 51-55, F
@Piper Yeah also about name tags - my hubby argues with me when i tell him it’s weird af - “well why do they wear name tags then? if they didn’t like it why don’t they tell me?” i gave up. he just does what he wants anyway.
Piper · 61-69, F
@DoubleRings When someone is wearing a name tag, I've been guilty of using that name to address them as that name also. I do usually ask first though, if they mind...and if that is actually their name.
acpguy · C
@DoubleRings I have the opposite problem, I have a name that is not common and prefer to go by the shortened version and that is what I tell people when I introduce myself but some people seem to have to use the proper long version which I do not like.
Peapod · 61-69, F
I think I had the opposite experience the first time someone shortened my name. I actually liked it and it stuck.
I can see how this would normally be annoying though. My last name is often mispronounced, even after saying it more than once. It's super easy to pronounce too. Go figure.

@RogueLoner I do not personally think, that any those "rule" descriptors apply to what name people prefer to be called.

They are trying to imply an intimacy that does not exist and I find it off-putting.
Piper · 61-69, F
@Mamapolo2016 I think it does, also.

It is annoying . My husbands boss of 16 years still calls me the wrong name
Elevatorpitches · F
@Piper My mom confused me with my sister, re: the name.
Our names were almost the same and both names were to honor the same dead relative.
Thats parental respect 4 u
SHHHHHEEESH!!!

Piper · 61-69, F
@Elevatorpitches My mom just called my brother and I by our dog's or each other's name sometimes, when she was distracted or upset about something. I am also guilty of that, at times...as in using a 'wrong' name.
Elevatorpitches · F
Lochlee · 56-60, F
Yes, it assumes a certain familiarity. Most mean no harm by it, I don't like it personally though.
Peaches · F
Sometimes...my name is Pamela, but most always say Pam. Seems most people always want the shorter version of a name? 🤷
Piper · 61-69, F
@Peaches "Sometimes" is a key word, I think, concerning this general question. My given name is Patricia, and people often shorten it to Pat. I've never been a "Pat". If someone yelled PAT in a public place, I doubt I'd even turn my head. Still, it's no big deal unless I've just said to someone.... "you can call me Patti".
FloorGenAdm · 51-55, M
That sounds like an insurance salesman move.
Piper · 61-69, F
@FloorGenAdm It sort of does, yeah.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
This is one of my pet peeves as well. Not so much with my own name, but the general trend amazes me.
I imagine that Queen Lizzy is not amused.
And congratulations on posting question number five! 😁

Oh God, I remember this one day back in my freshman year of college. I had this really bad strain of animal strep throat and my brain was tooooootally fried. I was eating with my friends (for some reason), and they brought another one of their friends, Rebecca, who I'd never met before. She introduced herself and I called her Rachel. And she corrected me like a minute later, but I kept on saying Rachel and thinking she said Rebecca until eventually I just gave up. Jesus that hurts to think about.
SomeMichGuy · M
Well, which IS it, Piper? Are you William or Debbie? Sheesh... 😉😆
Yes. Newly-met persons should not presume to give you some alternate/pet name.

Piper · 61-69, F
@SomeMichGuy Neither. My own given first name though, does have many options for variations.
Seems we agree, that persons ought not disregard what an individual clearly states as their name.

SomeMichGuy · M
@Piper Of course. In fact, getting a name RIGHT is very important, socially. I often make sure that I get both the pronunciation and spelling correct...π-per
Piper · 61-69, F
@SomeMichGuy I think it's pretty important to many people...yes. I too, give attention to both the spelling and pronunciation of a person's name.
DukeOfEarle · M
Wait, what? Could you write that down again?
Piper · 61-69, F
@DukeOfEarle Yeah.
DukeOfEarle · M
@Piper Sorry. I am a jerk
StarLily · 51-55, F
Yes!... but I'm so used to it that I often just let it go. Unless it's someone that I know I'll talk with often then I'll correct them until they get it right.🤭
My real name is a common nickname as well... so people often call me by that other name despite never being introduced to them as such.

Grateful4you · M
A little yes. All my closest friends know not to call me "Dave" I like my more formal "David"
Grateful4you · M
@Piper My dad called me "Davey" as a kid if it was being used as a term of endearment I wouldn't mind.
Piper · 61-69, F
@Grateful4you But that's way different, I think, from someone you've just met calling you Davey.
Grateful4you · M
@Piper Yes, that would probably make me feel a bit uneasy for sure.
Adaydreambeliever · 56-60, F
No it doesn't annoy me.. I get annoyed about *some* specific things as we know but things like that, really aren't on my radar.. I would assume they aren't good with names.. so I wouldn't hold it against them
BiasForAction · M
I’ve been called worse!
Piper · 61-69, F
@BiasForAction OH, so have I! 😃
SweetMae · 70-79, F
Yes, that seems to incidate a familiarty that doesn't exist yet.

SW-User
My name is easy to pronounce but they always misspell it.
Piper · 61-69, F
@SW-User Yeah, I think a lot of us have experienced that with our names. My last name is not at all uncommon, but it has often been misspelled.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
Or they think it's some other name altogether!
If you have a surname that can also be a first name, you tend often to be addressed mistakenly by that, sometimes even by people who have known you for some time.
I don't let it worry me if people have my name wrong - I am one of those slow to remember names and faces so I can't complain.

being · 36-40, F
as if it's not enough we don't get to chose our name to begin with..
acpguy · C
In a way yes, but I am forgiving as I think I have some kind of mental problem since I was a kid. I have a hard time remembering names for some reason, I can multiply two three digit numbers in my head and do all kinds of math problems without pen and paper, remember names of songs and bands, and great at history but names have always posed a problem. I have tried the trick of repeating names three times out loud and other things but I have some kind of mental block.
wuiop2 · 41-45
Unless it's an Elder, I would consider mangling their name as well.
Eddiesolds · 61-69, M
I dont mind. Its ok
Piper · 61-69, F
@Eddiesolds Okay, Ed.
Eddiesolds · 61-69, M
@Piper lol

SW-User
I don't really care. Better for me.
Elisbch · M
I don't like it. It's rude when someone take liberties like that after a first meeting. Sometimes, it can effect the rest of the relationship (no matter how short) or communications from then on.
akindheart · 61-69, F
ia m lucky if they get it right at all. my name is not normal. it is very short but they still screw it up.
Piper · 61-69, F
@akindheart I doubt if that would me annoy me much, as long they're trying to get it right. I'm pretty sure it would though, if it was someone I was around a lot.
Peaches · F
Sometimes. 😏I prefer Pamela, but many call me Pam.
Carazaa · F
Nope they just forgot!
antonioio · 70-79, M
not really
But it helps me form an opinion about them, letting me see that they have no respect for me 🙂

Yes that has happened to me and the time I remember most it seemed condescending. But mostly just thought it odd
Piper · 61-69, F
@SW-User Yeah, it can definitely seem and be condescending, sometimes.
Wol62 · 51-55, M
Yeah, totally hate that, they should ask you first.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
I am constantly apologizing to people for forgetting their name, I am terrible that way.
Piper · 61-69, F
@samueltyler2 I always feel bad too, when I forget someone's name, or get it wrong.
Thatsright · 61-69, M
Piper seems to have a good chance to stay on script.
Piper · 61-69, F
@Thatsright Well, there is Pip, Pipes and Pipey. Rarely at ALL annoying, except those times it's clearly intended to be. 🙂
bijouxbroussard · F
My actual first name defies nicknames, so occasionally people call me a different name altogether. 😅
Lochlee · 56-60, F
@bijouxbroussard I think I am in a similar boat. My name is unusual to pronounce. My whole life I have been called variations of my name (in fact my entire school career, and even my work career, I was/am known by an incorrect name) - only people who know me well know my name. Strangely enough, it doesn't bother me.
bijouxbroussard · F
@Lochlee It bothered me more when I was younger. Now I just say, “close enough !” 😏
JoePourMan · 61-69, M
I correct them immediately
Piper · 61-69, F
@JoePourMan I often do, as well. It sort of just pops out. :)
Elevatorpitches · F
I am the worst offender so no
Peppa · 31-35, F
Yes it's a tactic to piss you off don't let them wind you up.
I dealt with that at the care home my dad was at. They didn't like how interested I was for some reason. Used it as a weapon to undermine and deter me.

Atlotto · M
It does not. You can call me Az if you want to. 😉
Zonuss · 46-50, M
I don't mind. 🙂
Nope..that's one of the hazards of being my friend....I suck at names! 😖

SW-User
Little crap don't bother me much these days
Piper · 61-69, F
@SW-User Yes. In the scheme of things, it is surely a very minor annoyance.
MethDozer · M
I get monumentally more annoyed when people use my name when I never gave it to them. Like when they over heard someone else saying it or read it off a name tag. It's rude AF.
MethDozer · M
@DoubleRings The people who.do it always get pissy over being looked at like " who the Fuck are you" too. I've gotten written up before for saying " excuse you but I have no idea who you are so how do you know me?"
DoubleRings · 51-55, F
@MethDozer i agrée that it seems wrong to make people wear one. idk how to make my hubby ignore them i’ve told him it’s weird - Like an invasion of privacy. I used to wear one at a former workplace. I felt uncomfortable with people using my first name. Sometimes we would put bogus names in our tags just to be funny. We picked a name we either always wanted or seemed highly unlikely. Like giving an irish looking person a very italian sounding name lol.

@RogueLoner Ah...okay. This question is about telling someone your name, and then them shortening or adding to it right after you tell them.
We do agree about it being a very minor annoyance, Roguey.

@RogueLoner Yeah. That definitely sounds like a whole different thing than this question, and the recent happening that spurred it.
What made it notable enough to even give further thought to, is that the individual I was speaking to seemed to be annoyed that I repeated the name I'd just recently said was mine, when that individual called me a shortened version of it twice.
