Why do people worship their favorite imaginary deity out of fear?

The Bible has lots of stories where people were forced to worship the God character out of fear. They were frightened that he would kill them if they didn't comply with his demands to be worshiped. He did kill hordes of people who rejected his demands and he is always threatening to kill all of humanity unless people cater to his every whim.

Are you fearful of incurring his wrath?

Being Native American I revere Nature and the energy of the Universe not fear some deity that threatens hell to people.

@Grateful4you I've enjoyed my share of LSD. And mushrooms, angel dust. Mind expansive.

@kentex35 It was the Peyote buttons that taught me why in cave paintings are so frequently found both in human and animal images these very exaggerated elongated necks. These drugs when I started feeling the effects often made my own neck start to feel almost sore from the sense of feeling stretched. I actually once felt like I was a giraffe and could barely sit comfortably, feeling like my head would soon be brushing the ceiling.

Just a bit of advice to any young people planning to take one of these, no need to be alarmed. The effect is frequent.

I’m going to share a story

I lived a very hard life. My entire life was a struggle. When I was growing up my step dad was physically and verbally abusive. My mom was an alcoholic whose temper tantrums were so extreme I was always house hopping from my grandmothers to my moms. I remember crying because I felt like I had no one. When I was a child I started acting out at school so much that my parents sent me to a private Christian school.

I grew up in a “Christian” household but I never truly understood what it meant to be a Christian. Not only did I find god but I found hope. I had hope that my life was going to get better and it did. It always did. As a child the notion of hell is terrifying but I am a Christian because I love god and appreciate him for always being there for me when I needed him the most and for never abandoning me

The day i was saved I felt like the darkness inside me disappeared and was replaced with an eternal burning candle of a comforting happiness

When I got older I struggled with mental illness and eating disorders. I actually got ran over by a car during a purging episode. Purging can manifest as heavy exercise as well. When I got hit by that car I got in the ambulance and this perfect haze took over my field of view. And I saw visions of bills coming in and out of view. I saw money being printed in factories. And I also saw people gathering cotton in a field.

I cried and asked god to spare my life not because I deserves or wanted to live but to be with my 5 month old baby that my husband was too incompetent to raise himself with his incompetent family

I heard a voice say “ you place so much importance on money and bills. there’s so much more to your life than that” I felt a sensation of calm come over me and I knew I was going to survive my car accident

It was the greatest day of my life. I’m pretty sure god talked to me.

I am a believer out of love not fear. To fear god is to respect god which I do also

Indoctrination, its started when they are young, telling a impressionable 5 year old theyre are going to burn in hell leaves a lasting impression, telling them theyre evil and can never be good enough is a destroyer!

Was that your experience in your family? I didn't get the doom and gloom version when I was a kid.

If there were not some hell for people to go to when they die, religion would have went out of business overnight.
kentex35 · 100+, M
@Leggs some philosophers think religion came about because there were no cops and needed a scary after life to get them in line out else their neighbor would keep hitting on their old lady
Leggs · 46-50, F
@kentex35 It makes sense. Kind of strange how people just believed it though.
kentex35 · 100+, M
@Leggs little education equals more mind control to someone else
"A child is not a Christian child, not a Muslim child, but a child of Christian parents or a child of Muslim parents. This latter nomenclature, by the way, would be an excellent piece of consciousness-raising for the children themselves. A child who is told she is a 'child of Muslim parents' will immediately realize that religion is something for her to choose -or reject- when she becomes old enough to do so.”

@BlueSkyKing religion is like the fingers on a hand they are all different but still lead to the same place
Grateful4you · 70-79, M
@kentex35 I agree. The hand is ONE. Just as you and me are caught in a rare and complicated tapestry in the end, we are as we started ONE though with many threads.
Grateful4you · 70-79, M
The empty hope of redemption and an afterlife would be my guess.

@Grateful4you good conversation though
Grateful4you · 70-79, M
@kentex35 And with you. Namaste.
Because many people would rather appease an evil tyrant that stand up to it. That's how old middle eastern rulers with the God King narcissism acted. So it was the only way of keeping the God emperor from killing you and your family. As God kings became more supernatural and less physical people that appeasement remained.

I sure am not worshipping God out of fear. I used to go to church and during the service would step out and have a cigarette before returning. That's not fear if you ask me. I worship God for who he is and the jail he's freed me from. I suffered depression for more than a decade but he saved me. I owe him my life.
@karysma
The Israelites met the scary side of God while we met the tender one. Either way he's the same God.
Well that's what you have to remember.
The god you think of as loving and patient is the same god who murdered every first born son in Egypt with the stated purpose of showing the surrounding nations how powerful he was.
How cool is that
lol it would be great to actually see god's hand and hear his word. I like the Pentateuch more than later parts of the OT for just that reason. We're seeing god actually interact with people.
But don't forget that those times involved wandering for 40 years in the wilderness, getting immolated by god or swallowed up in the earth by god...among other judgements. And it didn't have to be you who was guilty, you might just belong to the same family or even tribe as the guilty party.
Personally that's a bit of a wide target for my taste.
karysma · 31-35, F
@Pikachu It would have been scary. I'd have been stoned for being stubborn or something 😂.

I mean I might not be in a desert in a literal sense but it sure feels like I'm there and desperately waiting to hear from God what to do next. Let's not forget that I don't have 40 years since Christ could show up any minute now.
Steve42 · 51-55, M
Not out of fear. I died in a car accident 30 years ago and I experienced what I believe is God, aka the Lord of Hosts.
Imsleepy · 26-30
I mean, you nailed it. It’s fear. They are extorted by their god under the guise of free choice.
markansas · 61-69, M
just out of spite he killed every person in the world except for one family. noah.. the great flood.. men women children babies and the unborn who could not have done a sin.
if there was a god i would worry.. there is no god..
markansas · 61-69, M
@kentex35 if that is so it started with adam and eve.. she only had sons.. who did the sons have babies with?
Diotrephes · 70-79, M
@kentex35
@markansas he was pissed. He forced incest on them too. No abortion on that boat.
Engaging in incest was one of the Israelites' favorite activities. Remember how pissed they got when Esau didn't marry one of his relatives =

Genesis 26:34 (NKJV) = "When Esau was forty years old, he took as wives Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite. 35 And they were a grief of mind to Isaac and Rebekah."

Rebekah was so flipped out that she conspired with Isaac to steal Esau's birthright. And Esau is the only person by name in the Bible that God said that he hated.
Diotrephes · 70-79, M
@markansas
@kentex35 if that is so it started with adam and eve.. she only had sons.. who did the sons have babies with?
Eve was still there. 🥴

I'm glad I got an all loving God.
Diotrephes · 70-79, M
@kentex35
I'm glad I got an all loving God.
There are lots of characters in the Bible but can you guess which specific one the God character hated by name?

Malachi 1:2-3 (NKJV) =
2 “I have loved you,” says the Lord.
“Yet you say, ‘In what way have You loved us?’
Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?”
Says the Lord.
“Yet Jacob I have loved;
3 But Esau I have hated,
And laid waste his mountains and his heritage
For the jackals of the wilderness.”

So much for your "all-loving" God.
kentex35 · 100+, M
@Diotrephes He gets pissed off. When He just told them you are my favorite and they get Sodom and gamorrha swinging that probably chapped His ass. And he told that one girl don't look back and now she's a pile of salt in the desert. Give it take a detail.

My favorite philosophy is, "A just man causes the devil more affliction than a million blind followers. "

Allelse · 31-35, M
Dunno. If I was going to be religious I'd want to worship a benevolent female deity with massive tits who loves me and is proud of me for not being a raging psychopath, and she loves animals and pizza and if people break her rules she just zips them out of existence. So no hell fire forever lasting, just zip and you're gone.
kentex35 · 100+, M
@Allelse and legs all the way up to that upside down heart. Ok I'm in.
kentex35 · 100+, M
And mostly Israelites I guess because that's all there was except a few neanderthals and what was left over from the ice age kind of era. But people got messages from angels burning bushes. There were no Hebrew slaves building pyramids. They found proof. It wasn't union job but everyone got a check on Friday if they came in
Or a goat maybe a lamb something
Entwistle · 51-55, M
Its largely based on fear. Fear of Hell,fear of none existence. Its self delusion at its finest.
karysma · 31-35, F
@Entwistle You'll know when you get to the after life that you were the one living in delusion though.
Entwistle · 51-55, M
@karysma See,you can't recognise your delusions whilst you are suffering from them.
karysma · 31-35, F
@Entwistle Go look in the mirror. You'll see whose ignorant
Grateful4you · 70-79, M
@kentex35 I've always advised young people asking about those you mentioned above.

These are NOT recreational drugs. Avoid dance clubs, large concerts and crowds, avoid using alcohol or those drinking the same. Quiet, natural settings are best. Just let go, let yourself drift. be aware of simple things it will be the most mundane rock, tree branch, or similar things you usually ignore that will be the most profound.

I would only listen to simple music and especially loved Ravi Shankar sittar sounds, flutes and especially the Celtic harp of Ani Williams. These drugs changed my life forever, God is only to be found in nature.
Grateful4you · 70-79, M
I only have one living sibling I am aware of. I am no longer welcome in his home. My nephew is forbidden to see me because as a homosexual I'm no longer acceptable to the Christian family.

No matter how much I have dedicated my life to the "Helping professions" I remain beyond redemption totally unworthy to any biological family.

It makes me sad but I can accept making "family" as I find them. Even if they are drug -ridden derelicts huddled in doorways I will embrace them if they want my fellowship. As long as I* can love myself and retain a sense of empathy, seeking true Agape fellowships and love I can be happy and survive being shunned by a ignorant few.
jshm2 · 41-45, M
Why the fuck are you gatekeeping, if it's "imaginary" in your insular mind? Seems it's more your problem, than theirs.
@jshm2

...how is he gatekeeping?
It's not weird to obey a tyrant but it is weird to love one. That seems to be the criticism raised in OP's question.
Not sure what your complaint is aimed at...

Your premise is based on fear. Huge mistake. It's all based on LOVE!!! 😊
@Diotrephes Awe, reverence, respect and devotion and sometimes actual fear, is how the term fear, in the Bible, is used.

@nonsensiclesnail Exactly! 😊🤗❤️
There are many versions of the bible, and none are valuable.

@Diotrephes yup in the back two inchs from the spine and i was running like hell at the time. it passed threw my shoulder by my neck.. next question?
Diotrephes · 70-79, M
@markansas I hope you recovered without any lasting debilitating conditions. You could have easily been killed, paralyzed, or bled to death.
smiler2012 · 56-60, M
all it shows is the weakness of human fear i think this is rather taken out of context slightly . god punished the wrong doers like sodom and gomorrah when the egyptians followed the fleeing isralites across the red sea. we where wicked creatures back in the old testament .sadly the human race has not improved a great deal over the centuries diotrephes]
kentex35 · 100+, M
@smiler2012 but as we evolve or get smarter so does our sense if religion. Don't things are more complex than saying lightening if from Thor. Or at the end of you don't sit stealing my old lady something bad will get you. It has horns and it is a snake sometimes. Or I'm going to take karate for two weeks and come back and kick your butt.
I know. But it's for me I believe in a life after. It makes dying easier right now. It made not dying with praying for. I swear God let me get out of this and I'll be a priest. It's adaptive like the constitution it will not make sense at times and be the answer next. I don't say this to argue. It to belittle anyone. I don't need to be the winner of who is the true religion debate. I can learn from other's and why do some care of I do? I might get my head cut off on TV if ii go in and start trying to change everyone like I know best. My example may make someone kind once at the right time. I don't use scripture to I suit me. I can't remember who said what but I can remember most of the things said by the people in the religious history book. If Jesus was real or not we all know the story pretty much would it be wrong to emulate him? You seen those eyes of the ones that know God's peace that smile of content and soft confidence peace. They know something but they don't talk it unless you really ask. There is nothing wrong with and their happiness. They may actually be fearless. Truely dependable and perky l purely honest damn I can't do that. I need confession often
Peace be with you.
