You'd have to define "overcame it" ... There's plenty of things I've learned to deal with.

@sarabee1995 Well thats great you can make it through if need be. I think its all in HOW we are looking at a fear or issue.

As a kid I had crippling emetophobia (fear of vomiting). It was so bad that I didn't burp for 8 months for fear of accidently burping up some stomach contents. Probably why I had terrible stomach problems when I was 15. Alcohol has helped me to get over this fear.
Degbeme · 70-79, M
Claustrophobic and still very much am. 🙁

uhm, hmm... i haven't gotten rid of my phobias, no. tunnels, heights, elevators, certain types of bridges, very high winds, and sometimes germs in certain ways... not like Howey Mandel-level

@Coralmist yeah, I know I completely missed the target with that comment. If anything, it’s a compliment and maybe a boost in your confidence. From what I read and learned from you, I believe you’re worthy. As long as you acknowledge your issues and continue to work on bettering yourself everyday, then you’re definitely worthy enough for someone and someone to be worthy of you. Your issues shouldn’t be a burden.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@SW-User Thank you friend 🌸 I guess for some these issues might be a burden...but they are probably not the right person for me. Because I do know if others have issues I am pretty open to being patient or helping if I can. Ty for your ideas Deth🌼
SW-User
@Coralmist exactly. We don’t need negative people in our lives anyway. I’ve cut so many people out that it’s almost funny. You see, it’s a beautiful thing that you are open to being patient and helping others. You, at the very least, deserve as much from a kindhearted individual. I see relationships as two people who are willing to work through life together. I’m rambling at this point, but I believe you can overcome it. Keep trying!
Piper · 61-69, F
No, not really. I've had a fear of most spiders, since I was a little kid. I never did kill them and still don't, but the aversion and sort of fear remains. The fear of extreme heights I realized I had in my 20's, hasn't gone away either.
SW-User
Nope. Terrified of heights and snakes.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@SW-User oh wow
I've been meaning to get fake snakes and put them at my parents house. I've bought some super realistic fake roaches for a dollar. I watched my mom smack it SO hard 😂
What made it even more funny is that she assumed my dad had put it there so she put it on his pillow 😆

Not sure it's quite as bad as a phobia but every year I struggle to get started doing my tax return despite it being very simple.

Yes, my crossdressing
But every once and while it pops up. Then guilt and shame take over. Like I sometimes I feel guilty for liking womens clothing.
You think wearing it for close to 40 years, having a wife that actually don't give a shit what I wear. You think I wouldn't have an issue.
For the most thats true, but every once and while. It creeps in the back of my head.

@HumanEarth I understand. Never feel guilt if you enjoy women's clothing 🦋 We all have a wide range of likes or dislikes and who makes up rules??? No one can. Be you ...because you are a great person 🌸
HumanEarth · 56-60, F
I know that, but my brain just don't seem to want to get the hint.

Cloud7593 · 46-50, F
I was afraid of dogs the whole time I grew up. I'm still a little afraid of big ones.
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
yes, after being attacked at night I was afraid to walk around the city at night for some time. it felt really good when I got over it and was able to walk around at night again.
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
@Coralmist it was kind of helpful because after that I became more mindful of taking life decisions based of maintaining peace of mind. like if someone or something is a source of unnecessary stress Its easier to move away from it. also I was thinking of becoming meditation instructor specializing in PTSD because the method i followed was so effective.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@reflectingmonkey I have PTSD..if you do become one I will be your first client..I can pay in SW gifts🙂
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
@Coralmist I will keep that in mind. I was thinking that if i do start teaching this I would like to teach it for free for a while until I trully feel I am good enough at it to start charging money.
bijouxbroussard · F
Fear of speaking or performing in public. I still don’t love it, but I can do it if I have to. I compensate by being really prepared. However, I’m still terrified of extreme heights.
Cloud7593 · 46-50, F
@bijouxbroussard That's the most common phobia.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Fear of deep water. 5 years old.
Fear of heights. 5 years old.
Multiple fears after doing certain things. Then immediately confronting that fear. Like a year after a bad motorcycle accident I went riding with my brother despite my fear.
Confronting my fears head on was what I learned at 5 years old.

@DeWayfarer Good for you facing that. I hear the more we try to turn away from fear the stronger it holds us. The more we hust normalize it the less it grows.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Coralmist I believe it's a combination of things.
It's far easier to confront things when you are very young. This applies to anything. Even languages.
So if you have learned how to get over things very young, like when I did at 5, then getting over your fears is easier throughout your whole life.
It's been known since Aristotle learning things before the age of seven greatly helps define the person..

I have overcome my fear of flying, although it still makes me nervous.
I have not overcome my fear of needles/injections as they are extremely painful to me.

Fire. I used to have nightmares about it. Now, as I use my fireplace, I routinely stick my hand in there(albeit not when it's roaring) and I could not care less.

Needles. So bad that I risked blacking out for a jab.
Being bedridden in the hospital after the cancer amputation and getting shots multiple times per day over a couple of weeks helped me overcome.

I am claustrophobic. I closed my eyes and said prayers.

@geoam1 I look at needles everything the nurses and phlebotomists stick me. I try to train myself to not be bothered by blood and gore.
Needles aren’t too bad.
