I just checked my social security statement and ….

It says that they overpaid me almost $5,000 and they want their money back! Wtf? How does something like that even happen? I don’t have money like that to give them for their mistakes! There was some kind of a waiver thing I could fill out to hopefully get them to waive it so I will do that.
Has this happened to anyone else here?

Did you not notice the extra money u were getting in your monthly check? I mean that's a set amount u get monthly right?
Mardrae · F
@ButterRobot I am almost at that point myself
ButterRobot · 51-55, M
@Mardrae I'm sure its a stress you don't need, but try not to worry about it. they cant take blood from a stone.
Mardrae · F
@ButterRobot they can garnish my paycheck
4meAndyou · F
Be very careful. Go down to the social security office in person to try to find out what is going on. Don't give anyone any information over the phone or on the internet.

1. I would talk to them. We have a local office that may now be finally opened, three years after "Covid."
2. If that is not an option, call them. I heard SS is a lot easier to get through to on the phone than is the IRS.
3. If you actually owe them an overpayment, i think they take installments.

While the mistake never should’ve happened, you really should’ve noticed when $5,000 of unaccounted money landed at your feet. The smart thing would have been to hold onto it, check into the discrepancy and resolve it right away.
Teirdalin · 31-35
@Mardrae Sure it's not just a scam?
Did they have very thick indian accents?
Mardrae · F
@Teirdalin no- it was the official website I called.
Graylight · 51-55, F
@Mardrae @Mardrae And it really, truly probably was. But if you want to be certain (my partner's in info security and drives me crazy with this stuff), ask them to call you back. Their number will come up as an official listing; anything else is a scam.

Continued luck and talk to that lawyer. It's his job to help you in matters like this.
graphite · 61-69, M
This says you have to pay them back within 3 years. The money can be deducted from your check in installments.

Mardrae · F
@graphite I don’t understand how this happened!
graphite · 61-69, M
@Mardrae Could be some misfiling of something, could be their mistake. Try to get them to waive at least some of it, try to pay it back in minimal monthly installments. You could contact an attorney but that will set you back another $300, at least. Might be worth it.
Mardrae · F
@graphite I did contact my lawyer. He’s a friend and helps me out for free a lot
That happened to me when I was collecting it for my son. It's bullshit. Their mistake.
Mardrae · F
@Graylight I just called the main office a few minutes ago and they said that since I don’t already receive benefits, I have to pay back the entire amount at one time!!!! They are going to send me an official letter by mail since I never received one. I’m freaking out. I spent all night filling out the 14 pads waiver, but there’s no way I’m giving them my bank at work information! I don’t know what to do. I contacted my lawyer too
Graylight · 51-55, F
@Mardrae That's your answer. Don't do anything until your lawyer issues or has you issue a letter stating all contact is to go through his office. That'll get them off your back. And it will show them you're serious about fighting this issue. If you trust your attorney, take the next steps from his/her. Best of luck and I can tell you only from my experience the Big Government is definitely a rolling tidal wave but you can get through it, especially if you talk to the right people along the way. This will work out. Breathe, stay calm and project good thoughts.
Mardrae · F
@Graylight thanks!!!
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
Is it ssi survivor benefits? If so, they keep paying during the year and will overpay, then ask for it back. This can happen if you are still working. Call your local social security office and they will clear it up for you, it all depends on how much money you earned.
Mardrae · F
@BackyardShaman it was around that amount, over 20 years ago.
Funlov · M
What’s that? Is that like in Canada we get our T fours income tax, every year saying what you paid in that what that is
Mardrae · F
@Funlov I’m not sure how to describe it. When you retire, you get social security benefits from all the years you worked. You can also get it if you’re on disability. The government pays you a monthly check. I’m not old enough to get social security yet from retirement, but over 20 years ago I was on disability for a year and that’s where this came from.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
That really is wild. I have had decent luck getting to speak to people at Social Security.
Mardrae · F
@samueltyler2 who exactly should I call?
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@Mardrae your local office.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Did you make over the amount of money you can make without being penalized by SS?
Mardrae · F
@cherokeepatti I don’t get social security-I’m only 58 years old. I was on disability over 20 years ago though, for one year and I think this is where this is coming from.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Mardrae If they can dig up something they will.
SW-User
Tell them I'll see you in court
graphite · 61-69, M
@SW-User You don't want to take on the federal government in court. They will outgun you every step of the way. Best to negotiate something, possibly a partial waiver.
SW-User
@graphite yeah you're right
Mardrae · F
@SW-User I wish that would work!
GJOFJ3 · 61-69, M
They will agree to take 10% of the overpayment from your benefit each month until paid off
graphite · 61-69, M
@Mardrae Find out who your Congress person is and call their office. Call your City Hall if you don't know.
graphite · 61-69, M
@graphite Also, go down to your local SS office if you can. An in-person visit is probably better than a phone call in this case.
Mardrae · F
@graphite I plan on going down there on my next day off, which is next Friday. But I’m going to call the office Monday morning too
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
That’s a huge gut punch. 5k is no joke .
They will make you pay it back, but they should be able to spread it out. It still sucks. How did that happen?
Mardrae · F
@LeopoldBloom I have no clue!!! I’ve never heard of anything like this! Isn’t there someone I can call?
@Mardrae You need to make an appointment at the local Social Security office to meet with an agent, or just walk in and take a number.
Mardrae · F
@LeopoldBloom I was on disability over 20 years ago. They dropped me and now they want their money back. Over 20 years later
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
It's never happened to me, but I've heard of it happening. Good job not spending the money.
Mardrae · F
@LordShadowfire ??? What money?
