I just checked my social security statement and ….

It says that they overpaid me almost $5,000 and they want their money back! Wtf? How does something like that even happen? I don’t have money like that to give them for their mistakes! There was some kind of a waiver thing I could fill out to hopefully get them to waive it so I will do that.
Has this happened to anyone else here?

That happened to me when I was collecting it for my son. It's bullshit. Their mistake.

@Spoiledbrat I’ll call them tomorrow

@Spoiledbrat Is it a mistake when two 10s are stuck together at the cashier's station? Or do you want that extra 10 back because it was a mistake to hand it over?
Mardrae · 61-69, F
@Spoiledbrat how did you resolve it?
@Graylight Yeah but asking for it back 2 years after it's been used is bullshit. They need to learn how to count. And the money wasn't stuck together. It was freely given.

@Spoiledbrat Yeah, the problem is that "my mistake" doesn't apply to government entities as a rule. the mistake was almost certainly their fault, but they'll get the cash back if they can, and they're entitled. What they don't want to do is have to fight for months or years aver such a small amount (to them). And it's unlikely they'd collect the sum all at once.

@Graylight I just called the main office a few minutes ago and they said that since I don’t already receive benefits, I have to pay back the entire amount at one time!!!! They are going to send me an official letter by mail since I never received one. I’m freaking out. I spent all night filling out the 14 pads waiver, but there’s no way I’m giving them my bank at work information! I don’t know what to do. I contacted my lawyer too

@Mardrae That's your answer. Don't do anything until your lawyer issues or has you issue a letter stating all contact is to go through his office. That'll get them off your back. And it will show them you're serious about fighting this issue. If you trust your attorney, take the next steps from his/her. Best of luck and I can tell you only from my experience the Big Government is definitely a rolling tidal wave but you can get through it, especially if you talk to the right people along the way. This will work out. Breathe, stay calm and project good thoughts.
