I just checked my social security statement and ….

It says that they overpaid me almost $5,000 and they want their money back! Wtf? How does something like that even happen? I don’t have money like that to give them for their mistakes! There was some kind of a waiver thing I could fill out to hopefully get them to waive it so I will do that.
Has this happened to anyone else here?

While the mistake never should’ve happened, you really should’ve noticed when $5,000 of unaccounted money landed at your feet. The smart thing would have been to hold onto it, check into the discrepancy and resolve it right away.

@Graylight very astute observation

@Graylight I never received $5,000. I was on disability over 20 years ago for 1 year and they cancelled me. Now they want me to pay them back, over 20 years later

@Mardrae Ah. Worry not. First, they need to prove you owe the money. Then they have to prove the sent it to you. Then they have to spend about three times the amount getting it back because you'll file appeals. That'll tie them up for years. Or it should - were you a minor at the time? Even if they do deem that you own it, they may work out a payment plan through taxes or something similar.

@Graylight I just got off the phone with them and they said I have to pay the entire amount at once since I am not receiving benefits already. They want my bank account and work info, etc!! I’m freaking out

@Mardrae Sure it's not just a scam?
Did they have very thick indian accents?
Mardrae · 61-69, F
@Teirdalin no- it was the official website I called.

@Mardrae @Mardrae And it really, truly probably was. But if you want to be certain (my partner's in info security and drives me crazy with this stuff), ask them to call you back. Their number will come up as an official listing; anything else is a scam.

Continued luck and talk to that lawyer. It's his job to help you in matters like this.
