I just checked my social security statement and ….

It says that they overpaid me almost $5,000 and they want their money back! Wtf? How does something like that even happen? I don’t have money like that to give them for their mistakes! There was some kind of a waiver thing I could fill out to hopefully get them to waive it so I will do that.
Has this happened to anyone else here?

Did you not notice the extra money u were getting in your monthly check? I mean that's a set amount u get monthly right?

@HappyCamper74 ?? Set amount? What do you mean? I work a full time job and get a raise every year.
@Mardrae when u receive ur social security check monthly, isn't it the same amount monthly? And didn't u notice that there had been a substantial increase to total up to this $5k in over payments?
@Mardrae How are you on Social Security if you have a full-time job? That might be the problem right there. They want the money back that they paid you when you were working. When you get a job, you're supposed to call them and let them know so they can stop the payments.

@LeopoldBloom ss allows for a certain amount of earned income per year. Once that threshold is met, then payments are reduced or stopped.
@Carla A full-time job at minimum wage would exceed Social Security payments in most states. Getting a job doesn't halt SS payments immediately; they will continue to pay out for a few months.

@LeopoldBloom they do. I once had an older fellow(geeze, im almost as old now🫤) that did punch work for me. He would start at the beginning of the year, work for a few months and then have to quit till the following year.
I found this...

@HappyCamper74 no- I don’t get social security. I work a full time job. I was on disability for 1 year, over 20 years ago and they cancelled me and now they want all the money they gave me 20 years ago
@Mardrae That has to be a mistake. I would recommend talking to a lawyer. There may be a statute of limitations as you can't be expected to have kept the medical records for your disability for 20 years. There should be a legal aid society in your area; here in Georgia you would contact Georgia Legal Services.
@Mardrae oh,okay. I misunderstood your original post. The way you made it sound was as if you were receiving social security benefits now.
Well, disability from 20 years ago is a huge reach. I'm sure you don't even have any documentation of that anymore being so long ago. Fighting the IRS or Social Security isn't going to end well for you. They will eat you alive, sad to say. I would set up an appointment with your local SS office and go talk with them in person to see if what's truly going on here. Sorry this is happening to you.😔

@HappyCamper74 thanks- story of my life 😂

@Mardrae that's ridiculous - it reminds me of something controversial here called robo-debt where they used an algorithm to wrongly get people to repay monies based on the predictions. People committed suicide.
Mardrae · 61-69, F
@ButterRobot I am almost at that point myself

@Mardrae I'm sure its a stress you don't need, but try not to worry about it. they cant take blood from a stone.

@ButterRobot they can garnish my paycheck
