"Pissed" in the UK means drunk, I’m told.
In the U.S. it’s a shortened version of "pissed off".
So when an American says he’s "pissed" about something, he’s angry.
I was actually blocked when I tried to explain this to someone from the UK.

This does sound like they meant it seriously. Sounds like they were a bit nutty, pedantic, and traditionalist. They also don't get that American English is different and has been for a very long time. We don't own how the language is used outside our borders.

Potato chips.....we fry those and eat them with fish. Not fries..unless they are thin chips.
What Americans call potato chips we call crisps.
We have biscuits not cookies.
And chocolate not candy.
All fizzy drinks are not soda....
Here a Fanny is not a bottom.Nor is a beaver.
We do not have elevators. We have lifts.
Trousers are what Americans call Pants. Here Pants are underwear.

@bijouxbroussard The whole thing is confectionary but that's a word that's seldom used. It's subdivided into either chocolate (usually a single bar of) or chocolates(as in a box of), or the anything else is called sweets. Not sure where you guys got the word candy from, you have such a diverse population the etymology would be interesting.

Thongs. I think in US they are what we call flip flops. But here they are underwear I don't think I would be allowed to wear.
travelguy01 · 41-45, M
@Blodyn I don’t know wtf you and “Mr. Old and Curmudgeonly AF”, are talking about, but thongs are naughty underwear in the US too. Flip flops are also called flip flops here.

Pissed means drunk in the UK and angry in America. British people call Erasers 'rubbers' when Americans only use that word for condoms. Americans call a small bag worn around the waist a 'fanny pack' but British people use 'fanny' as a word for vagina.

@Really One minute past midnight is still 12.01 am here in Britain and 12.01 pm is one minute after midday.I have no clue where you read it as the other way around. The origin of am is anti meridiem, the Latin for before midday.Post meridiem is the Latin for after midday, abbreviated to pm meaning the sun had passed the meridian as in past midday.Day month year or year month day are logical.
Really · 80-89, M
@RubySoo, @tallpowerhouseblonde : I didn't read it anywhere. It's just what I seem to remember from my life in Britain; more than 40 years ago now. Or It's just the way I've always thought of it without realising I was the only sensible one in the whole country 😄 ! Or maybe it's changed over time to fit the American-dominated 'mid-Atlantic' culture with everybody singing like a cowboy. 🤠 Haha.
As for what's logical I'll try an analogy although I know they always have a flaw that can be attacked ...
I'm counting apples - one apple, two apples, three apples - but when I have twelve apples and I add one more I call it an orange. Yeah I know it's a poor analogy, but if you genuinely try to understand what I say about the am/pm thing you will 'get it.' Otherwise probably not and you'll see it as ridiculous.
But finally, why is one minute into the new day not written as 0.01 ? 🤨

Subway in America means a train. Here it means a ffordd dan ddaear but that's Welsh. A walkway under the road?
Really · 80-89, M
@Blodyn And I meant 'subway' as generally used on both sides of the Atlantic. Why are you "responding" with/about a Welsh phrase no one has raised?
Subway In America does not necessarily mean train. One can take the subway or one can go through a subway or one can excavate a subway etc etc etc.

@BluntSm0ker Yes, 75 years ago we were saving the world from a very unpleasant form of right wing aggression. Thankfully the USSR was on our side and absorbed about 75-80% of Hitler's army and airforce. Britain took care of most of Hitler's navy, plus the Italians, Iraquis, etc that sided with Hitler. The world owes the USSR a major debt for that.
I believe that the US joined in after Japan attacked Pearl Harbour?

@BluntSm0ker Saved and being saved. Stepping in when nobody else would and doing what no other nation had the moral or physical courage to attempt.
Thank God for the USSR- and the Commonwealth. At one time the only fully armed and equipped force ready to face Hitler's Right Wing monsters was a Canadian division based on the south coast of England- while the RAF, of course, inflicted the first defeat on the Fascists.
