Do countries that implement the death penalty only do it to their own citizens?

Why did I ask this question?
We don't have the death penalty in our country and I want to know if I can get this sentence if I go to a country where this penalty is applied and commit a crime. Excuse my curiosity and sorry if I said something wrong, English is not my native language

Indonesia executed Australians Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran after they were found guilty of attempting to smuggle 8kg of Herion out of Indonesia in 2005.
They were executed in 2015.
Adstar · 56-60, M
@Gusman Yes this was the example i was thinking of when i made my reply.. But it was not sure if the execution was carried out in Singapore or Indonesia.. I think there has been a case in Malaysia too if my memory serves me right..
Pretzel · 61-69, M
if you go to the US there are 50 states - many do not have the death penalty

but if you commit a murder in Florida you can be sentenced to death regardless of the name of the country on your passport.

of course it may take 20 years to get the sentence carried out - and women are less likely to be executed.
Neptun · 18-21, F
@Pretzel she blocked me but I didn't do anything to her, ugh. Tbh I really want this.. Even though I know it's impossible.
Pretzel · 61-69, M
@Neptun I'm sorry that you are feeling that way. Is it circumstances?
Neptun · 18-21, F
@Pretzel what circumstances?
Graylight · 51-55, F
The US, despite what some have said here, has absolutely executed foreign nationals, although it isn't common. The US is part of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relation, but it hasn't always abided by the rules.

The Supreme Court has permitted numerous executions to go forward, saying that federal courts lack the power to address the issue if the lawyer appointed to represent the prisoner failed to timely raise it in the state courts. At least 34 foreign nationals have been executed in the modern era of the U.S. death penalty.
Neptun · 18-21, F
@Graylight So, does this apply to countries other than the US as well?
Graylight · 51-55, F
@Neptun That I can't tell you without risking misinformation. But I'm sure you'll get some helpful answers here.
Neptun · 18-21, F
@Graylight it's okay, thank you. Other than one answer, I was satisfied with the other answers..
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
No but there's major political consequences if you execute someone else's citizen. Like if someone is getting the death penalty their country normally intervenes.
Neptun · 18-21, F
@CountScrofula huh 🙃
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@Neptun Do me a favour and pls don't get executed.
Neptun · 18-21, F
@CountScrofula eh.. I don't think I'll be executed no matter what I do anyway
BlueVeins · 22-25
I'm pretty sure China almost did it to a Canadian just for having drugs, but the Canadian government negotiated her out of it.

In some countries, I think you can get the death penalty for reading the Bible, or some other innocuous act, so yes, it happens to non citizens.
Neptun · 18-21, F
@Carissimi nice then..
ABCDEF7 · M
To the best of my knowledge there is only one case where a person other than citizen of the country(India) was given death penalty.

The Supreme(Apex) Court upheld the death sentence of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack convict Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, saying that waging war against the country was the primary and foremost offence committed by the Pakistani terrorist.

Kasab along with nine other Pakistani terrorists had landed in south Mumbai on November 26, 2008 night after travelling from Karachi (Pakistan) by sea and had gone on a shooting spree at various city landmarks, in which 166 people were killed.

While Kasab was captured alive, the other terrorists in his group were killed by security forces during the counter-terror operations.
ABCDEF7 · M
@senghenydd It took 4 years to prosecute a terrorist in India, even when there were all evidences against him.
firefall · 61-69, M
@ABCDEF7 Indonesia & Thailand have both executed foreigners, more than once
ABCDEF7 · M
@firefall Was the reason justifiable?
pdockal · 56-60, M
You are subject to the laws in the country you in unless you have diplomatic immunity
Neptun · 18-21, F
@pdockal nice then
Adstar · 56-60, M
No... if people break the Law and it has a death penalty then they will execute them local or forigner..
Abstraction · 61-69, M
Which country are you planning to go to in order to commit a crime? That's what it sounds like. I go to developing countries that still have the death penalty (like USA :D ) a lot and I have no need to ask this question.
Yes, they execute foreigners.
Neptun · 18-21, F
@Abstraction thanks.. The comments to the question I asked and many of the answers in the link you gave satisfied me.. 🥲
Abstraction · 61-69, M
@Neptun Be careful, hey. There are countries where just loving someone can get you into trouble because of their repressive laws. And it's real.
Neptun · 18-21, F
@Abstraction tbh I don't think anything will happen to me.. I haven't been to any of those countries before, but I would like to go.. Ugh
Zeusdelight · 61-69, M
Yes, you commit a crime punishable by death in a country that has that penalty - it will be applied.

Has happened to a few Australians in Indonesia.

Imagine if it didn't work that way. Hitman travelling overseas would be an everyday event.
Neptun · 18-21, F
@Zeusdelight oh.. that's nice then
Zeusdelight · 61-69, M
@Neptun No, not really nice:) I do not support the death penalty, it is just the way the laws work.
Neptun · 18-21, F
@Zeusdelight Ofc, that's your own opinion, I respect it:) but tbh I don't think so
Vin53 · M
I'm not sure even what nationality has to do with anything here. If you're swimming in Sydney Australia, do you think the Great White shark cares where you were born?
Neptun · 18-21, F
@Vin53 ugh, I'm confused.. Anyway. What is the answer, yes or no
Gloomy · F
Unfortunately they also execute foreigners.
Death penalty needs to be abolished.
Neptun · 18-21, F
@Gloomy nice then.
And why it needs to be abolished, tbh I don't think so
Gloomy · F
@Neptun The state should not have the right to take someones life, I don't think anyone should have that right outside of self defense and military scenarious.
How can you defend such an inhumane practice?
Neptun · 18-21, F
@Gloomy Because I think it's a nice thing.. I wish it was in my country :'|
496sbc · 36-40, M
Yea u can be exacuted in another country if u did something like murder
Neptun · 18-21, F
@496sbc nice. what other crimes can I be executed for?
496sbc · 36-40, M
@Neptun umm 🤔 im not sure. But if we chat sometime maybe i cna help u with that
No. The CIA openly planned to kill Julian Assange. Obama openly assassinated Osama Bin laden, we killed Saddam Hussein. Really. Was you there? Context is forbidden where Americans are uber alles, so facts don't do squat.
@Roundandroundwego yes, but they're impossible to reach by words. Nobody can say it.
@Roundandroundwego then talk to the hand.
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@Roundandroundwego Military/CIA assassinations are very, very different from trial and execution of an average citizen by the state.

Like the CIA and US military are Bad Guys but for example if I went to Iran and they tried to execute me, there'd be a big fucking deal about it.
Vin53 · M
Short answer, yes. Long answer, yeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssss.
Indonesia shoots lots of foreigners for drugs
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
Are you Turkish? I hope you weren't affected by the earthquake 🖤
firefall · 61-69, M
No they apply it to anyone inside their borders
Incomplet · 22-25
Do you wish Execution?
Do you wish to Commit a Major Crime?
Murder? Rape?

Why are you asking this.?
Incomplet · 22-25
@Neptun You need to not listen to the other people.
You need to get away from there, from those people who make you feel so badly.
You should not hate yourself because of the words and actions of other people.

You need to not hate yourself.
You have no reason to die.

You are just miserable and depressed
and see no other alternative,
BUT there are good people and places.
Neptun · 18-21, F
@Adstar ugh she blocked me :(
I'm not depressed and suicidal anymore. :/
Adstar · 56-60, M
@Neptun I am glad you are not down in those depths now.. Hope you stay up and never go back down there again..
Usually it will apply to everyone in their jurisdiction but sometimes if they have a relationship with the country of the defendant that they value they might commute the sentence.
revenant · F
Most Asian countries will execute you if you bring drugs so no...the death penalty applies to everyone and not only their own citizens.
Neptun · 18-21, F
@revenant nice then..
iamBen · M
It's my understanding that one is subject to the laws of the country they are in. I'm not an expert.
Neptun · 18-21, F
@iamBen nice then
Nanoose · 61-69, M
Yeah when you are in another country you are subject to their laws. Cheers and happy weekend!
senghenydd · M
Ignorance is no excuse in law
senghenydd · M
@Neptun Essentially, it means that if someone breaks the law, he or she is still liable even if they had no knowledge of the law being broken. Thomas Jefferson said, “Ignorance of the law is no excuse in any country. If it were, the laws would lose their effect, because it can always be pretended.” 😂
Carissimi · F
And that’s stupid because if you don’t know that something is unlawful, how can you be law abiding in that instance? There are some antiquated laws still on the books, like don’t leave a pie to cool on your windowsill. No one will be arrested for that “crime” now. I doubt anyone leaves pies on their windowsills anymore, but if some corrupt Leo (or agency) wanted to get you, they can use any law you don’t know about, and there are many. @senghenydd
senghenydd · M
@Carissimi Yes I see the point you are making at end of the day if you or anyone else break the law in a foreign country it's not me you have to convince it's the foreign country.
Neptun · 18-21, F
craig7 · 70-79, M
MonaReeves86 · 36-40, F
@craig7 Indonesia does
SW-User
The death penalty applies to anyone who commits a serious enough crime in that country. It doesn't matter if you were born there or even live there.
Neptun · 18-21, F
@SW-User oh.. nice then
Neptun · 18-21, F
@SW-User what happened?
MonaReeves86 · 36-40, F
Yes of course if you killed somebody or smuggled drugs they can kill you if they want to, why you asked
Neptun · 18-21, F
@MonaReeves86 out of curiosity, I wish it was in my country :'/
MonaReeves86 · 36-40, F
@Neptun why, I don’t
Neptun · 18-21, F
@MonaReeves86 strangely I sympathize with this..
MonaReeves86 · 36-40, F
But not my country Australia doesn’t have the death penalty which is good
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
If you commit a capital crime in a country that has the death penalty, you get the death penalty. It doesn't matter if you're from that country. Of course, you can always appeal to your own government to interfere with that law. It might even work.
Neptun · 18-21, F
@LordShadowfire that's nice then.
If I don't apply to my own government, will they still be aware of my punishment?
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@Neptun I mean, eventually, when they ship your body home.
Neptun · 18-21, F
