I guess Marilyn is a good name
Yes I am. I'm happy it can't be shortened which is what my Mum wanted. Her name was shortened by friends and family as a child and she hated that. Same with my late Father so they chose names that couldn't be. My other siblings names can't be shortened either.

Not one of those things I waste energy over. It is what it is and has been for 86 years, in a few days. Actually two names, in a way: the formal and the colloquial version. Three come to think of it, because the family always used the shortened version of the formal because there already was a cousin in the family that went by the colloquial.
My youngest son is sort of in the same boat. We named him a three syllable name to go with his one syllable last name, but he always went by the shortened, first syllable until he got to college. At orientation in the dorm, the story goes, they asked the new kids to come up and indicate on the whiteboard what they preferred to be called. Most circled their first or middle, or shortened first name unless it was totally different. He, having gotten some contrarian genes from where ever, circled the middle syllable of his first name. To his wife and college buddies he has been that middle syllable ever since. So to most of the world he goes by the first syllable, officially by the full name, but to a select group, the middle syllable.

Yes I'm 150% happy with "Helen". Best female name on the planet.
The Achaians sent a thousand ships to the shores of Ilion, to get the first Helen back! Remember? 👍🏽

@helenS Indeed!
Not sure I understand your Grandma's view but all those names are fine to me!
Many of the most common Western European and American names are those old Hebrew ones.
One of my sisters is called "Sarah" which I think is an Old Testament name; we have a Peter and an Andrew in the family, but most of our family's names were not Biblical ones as far as I know.
They are old English ones though, so likely from all sorts of sources.

Yeah, I like it. I've gotten compliments on it before. It's not too common, even if it is similar to other, more common names. "Weston" sounds more like the name of a place or a last name sometimes, but I think it's a good first name and I'm glad my parents chose it.
Ferise1 · 46-50, M
@WestonTexan pretty cool
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
@WestonTexan i love that name its different

I’m happy with it but it wouldn’t be my first choice. My mother wanted to call me Charlie. I was born and then she forgot. When I was 7 years old she then got a dog and called her Charlie.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
Not really. I hated it when young: it is not very common and seemed a bit fey.
Worse, it was one of various names used in those days as stereotypes by lower-grade playwrights and comedians to indicate weak, simple-minded or "toff" characters.
Slowly I started to discover there were people in the world with the same name, finding fame in entirely positive ways. The first I heard of, was a radio-drama actor.
I learnt to accept the name eventually.
In my twenties I joined a small, local club that never had more than a couple of dozen members, yet there were now three of us with the same Christian name, often at the same events!

I do.
Not that anybody ever calls me by it.
I shortened it at school because teachers of the time could never spell it properly. 🙄
The last person to regularly use it was my Grandmother. And after she passed it seems to have gone with her.

I'm happy with my first name.
I don't exactly toss it around on the internet, because ID theft is very real, but it's Jason. My biological mother gave me the most common name she could think of because she had an unusual name and could never find anything in tourist gift shops with her name on it. I'm very grateful for that.

I never liked it, but only because it was so common.
Growing up, i felt generic. Not that I needed to feel special, but having an interesting name was so appealing.
I went to school with Carissa, Kokee, Bunee, Sand, Sunshine, a girl named Micheal. And then there are all the children of hippies like rainbow and river.
And I get Sarah.
In reality, not a bad name.
I recently learned what it would have been if i were a boy. I’ve berated both of my parents for their choice, for fun. Mark. Not even Marcus. Just, Mark.

I'm happy with it but others don't seem to be. 😂 It's originally Italian but people laugh when they hear it because it's popular in the African-American community so they think it's a black name.
lissah · 36-40, F
Melissa? I guess it's ok
lissah · 36-40, F
@brian29715 all my siblings had J names. Jeremiah, Joshua, and Justus. So i always thought my parents should have named me something like Jasmine. I always liked that name.
brian29715 · 51-55, M
@lissah that is a nice name. However, you broke the mold so your name shouldn’t follow the norm 😉😘
WandererTony · 56-60, M
Yup i am happy. Its a character from Indian mythology. Its not a very common name and sounds good too. I especially like it when people pronounce it correctly. 😊

@swirlie You're the one and only Swirlie!!

@Tumbleweed
The funny thing is, "swirlie" was actually a nickname I acquired from my girls gymnastics team in high school which then followed me into college and became used as my official 'first name', which I didn't start! During that time in my life, I only ever heard my real first name used by members of my own family at home!

Yes I like my name and my middle name. 😊
Yeah. So happy. Grateful actually. There’s a backstory to this 😂
@Julien so my father wanted to name me after his mother. Bertha….let that marinate.
My mom looked at him as if he just slapped her in the face and said “we’re not naming my daughter that”
My clueless father said “what’s wrong with it, I don’t understand”
My mother frustrated but willing to compromise goes “if it makes you feel any better, she can take your mother’s name but it’ll be her middle name. Not Bertha. Bertha is just disrespectful”
My father goes “whatever” not giving much thought to my future or how I would feel, just glad he didn’t have to put much effort into this decision.
