Not really. I hated it when young: it is not very common and seemed a bit fey.

Worse, it was one of various names used in those days as stereotypes by lower-grade playwrights and comedians to indicate weak, simple-minded or "toff" characters.

Slowly I started to discover there were people in the world with the same name, finding fame in entirely positive ways. The first I heard of, was a radio-drama actor.

I learnt to accept the name eventually.

In my twenties I joined a small, local club that never had more than a couple of dozen members, yet there were now three of us with the same Christian name, often at the same events!

Why didn't you just do the obvious and change your name if you didn't like it?
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@swirlie Good question! I suppose by the time I was an adult and knew that was possible, I was becoming used to it.

...sort of like me eventually getting use to my nickname "swirlie" which I acquired in my junior year of high school at 14 years of age, which was given to me by the girls on my gymnastics team, which then followed me when those same girls all followed me into university who then kept that nickname alive even to this day when I see them at summer social events! Why change it now, right?! 😁

@swirlie Oh, I've had an odd collection of nick-names over the years - but all in adult life, from work mates. :-)

@ArishMell
Did they all give you the same nickname so you wouldn't forget it?
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@swirlie No. It was different in each place. Thinking back it was really only in two work-places but I did have two or even three nicknames in each of them.

I had to ask what one was about. It turned out to be the name of a character in a children's TV show I have never heard of, let alone seen.

When you are given a nick-name it is hard to forget it - plenty of people to remind you!
