Does an animal's life has the same value as a human life?

We are at the pinnacle of the evolutionary pyramid. But does that give us the moral right to end anotherlife? Or does the rest of life exist to supplement our survival and happiness?
darkmere1983 · 46-50, M
has more value, many people now are worthless pieces of shit.
Renkon · 41-45, M
@darkmere1983 Funny, but feels like the truth.
@darkmere1983 preach

I don't think animal's lives have the same value, but that doesn't give us license to abuse them. You can pretty much tell the quality of a person by how they treat those who are beneath them...
Renkon · 41-45, M
@SW-User That is the humane way to see it. So true.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
No.
Why ? Because there are a billion times more Mosquitoes than humans on Earth. And Mosquitoes ADD nothing to either the food chain or benefit to other animals.
BUT carry diseases like Malaria or Dengue fever or Zika virus that kill all manner of life forms.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@Picklebobble2 Mosquitos are pollinators and important food sources for certain animals. They wouldn't survive without the mosquitoes.
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
@SW-User We can plant stuff and save animals if we want to.
SW-User
@Queendragonfly yeah but we’re failing at that. We consume consume consume
eMortal · M
I read some comments. People who value cats and dogs lives more than humans are psychopaths. If you’d rather save a cat and let a human die because he’s worthless to you, you’re not a sane individual. No matter how much you like animals, you’re dead inside.
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
@eMortal Don't go to Egypt then - cats are the supreme rulers. And remember you never own cats - they own you.
Turtlepower · 36-40, M
@eMortal I value my cat's life more than most stranger's because they're part of my family, but that comes within reason. If someone had said kill a random kid or your cat I'd choose my cat. That's just valuing what you know vs a human who is most likely a piece of shit.
Renkon · 41-45, M
@eMortal I don't think people are categorising humans in general or speaking aboutsaving one life over another.
Our opinions are based on our experiences, and in our experience, a cat or dog may offer more comfort than an abusive or hurtful human being. Although I am not a dog person, I must say that their loyalty and affection are unconditional. Perhaps people miss that in their lives.
SW-User
If my cat needed a kidney I'd give her one
Renkon · 41-45, M
@SW-User How old?
SW-User
@Renkon she's 3
Renkon · 41-45, M
@SW-User Still young, hopefully she won't need a kidney. What's her name? Is she a ginger?
BlueVeins · 22-25
A human life has greater moral value than a dog's life or a pig's life, but a dog or pig's life has greater moral value than a human's taste buds.
SW-User
I try to not harm anything. Even bugs. I eat ethically sourced meat/foods because I care. I absolutely think there is value to every life.
Renkon · 41-45, M
@SW-User IThat is something I believe as well. Animals, it is said, are terrified close tobeing killed.I guess the suffering remains the same. They may not be able to say anything, but you can tell by the look on their face. Although stunning may be beneficial, does it justify the killing? I'm not sure.
Jimbo7 · M
@SW-User I would harm no living thing intentionally
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
Pinnacle my ass.

Look at the way humans treat other humans.

If you asked an alien to deduce how much we value human life by the way we have treated eachother throughout all of human history to now, what do you think the alien would conclude?

Humanity is a race of child savages.
Renkon · 41-45, M
@GeistInTheMachine I must admit that I may have been overly generous in my assessment of human beings. When you look at how we treat our fellow humans, it makes you wonder whether we are safer with animals, because they kill for food, whereas we kill for greed and hatred.

If this continues, the life-ending astroid that may arrive someday may be disappointed to learn that all life has already been wiped off. We might make sure of that.
GeistInTheMachine · 31-35, M
@Renkon If humanity is going to kill itself, it should get on with it quick because I'm ready to go, but I'd rather not do it myself.
BijouPleasurette · 36-40, F
Of course an animal's life has the same value as a human life.
Renkon · 41-45, M
@BijouPleasurette I share the same believe...and concern.
BijouPleasurette · 36-40, F
@Renkon Good for you. :)
Human life has more value, but we should try to cause as little suffering as possible to animals.
VeganMoumita · 36-40, F
Well I don’t think so. As we eat fish & animal meat, that proves we don’t value animals and their lives.

P.S — Not trying to puncture any meat lover or fish lover’s emotions
Turtlepower · 36-40, M
@VeganMoumita you can value life and want to be healthier. We're omnivores so we have options but eating meat doesn't mean you don't value animal lives. Taking one bite of an animal and tossing it in the garbage however would be devaluing said live.
Renkon · 41-45, M
@VeganMoumita
It's difficult for me to justify killing another living being. Predators in the jungle kill preys for food. If we are going to starve to death, I believe it is reasonable to kill and eat. Can't we, however, survivewithout killing? At the very least, reduce it to the very minimum?

It is really upsetting to witness how animals are slaughtered in a slaughterhouse. They may be stunned, but we are taking life, and I am struggling to justify it.
VeganMoumita · 36-40, F
@Turtlepower that’s why I said that I am not hurting any meat lovers’ sentiments. It’s about people’s choice. But I personally don’t feel that this entire planet will go plant-based ever.
It's more like everyone has the right to be free of hunger. And in order to satisfy that right, whether you consume one form of life or the other. So long it's consciously done for survival, I think it's an act of honoring that life because now it becomes you.
Renkon · 41-45, M
@SoulKey If it is done on absolute necessity, it is sensible. But I wonder if it is absolute necessity in all case. How do we justify ending another life?
@Renkon The short answer is.. you can't.
gol979 · 41-45, M
Good question.

If you picked a random house fly and a random human baby and were told to kill one, which life form would you end?
gol979 · 41-45, M
@Renkon so a human baby is worth more than a fly?
Renkon · 41-45, M
@gol979 If you could only save one of either your little daughter or a stranger, who would you? Whatever you decision is, it doesn't mean one life is more valuable than the other. It is just that as an individual 'you' value one over the other in extreme situations. It's a matter of perceptive, I believe.
gol979 · 41-45, M
@Renkon i agree......its context, individual, human and what animal is the other choice
Jimbo7 · M
My dog died in March, if I could have gave him half the years I have left I would, to have him with me now.the bible said we have dominion over all animals and fish etc. Well that is a load of rubbish. In my eyes
Penny · 46-50, F
i kill bugs. if they were able to theyd probably kill us too if we annoyed them. in nature animals eat other animals. theyre not thinking about morals
Penny · 46-50, F
@Roundandroundwego i thought they were classified as insects
@Penny insects are classified as part of the animal kingdom because they're not plants but they're alive.
Penny · 46-50, F
revenant · F
If I had the choice between killing a cat and a kid. I would kill the cat no doubt.
revenant · F
@TrashCat I do not get it
TrashCat · M
@revenant Go to Alanama. You will know
revenant · F
@TrashCat if you invite me
originnone · 61-69, M
Value....such an odd term....Most people would say no, but a case could be made that they have equal value but it's fine for humans to act as a member of the food chain....
originnone · 61-69, M
@VeganMoumita I'd be all for it. In fact if fish were less expensive I would absolutely be pescatarian.
VeganMoumita · 36-40, F
@originnone depends on the fish you are eating. Mainly salmon, tuna & other deep sea water fish are expensive all over the water. But if you will have sweet water fish then they are quite cheap comparatively & easily available as well. Quite healthier compared to sea fish as they have high mercury compared to fresh water or sweet water fish which is not so good for our brain function
originnone · 61-69, M
@VeganMoumita I actually eat a lot of both. Salmon is good for reduction of cholesterol....
summersong · F
Yes. Humans are no better than any other animal
Dshhh · M
i think a lot of people are not worth a decent cat
For me it's not possible to be as aware of animal rights as I am of human rights. That's a reason to remind me that animal rights do exist. I've lived in dozens of different places, but only one place where it was the law that we respect animal rights. That's a sweet place where I felt protected.
butterflybaby75 · 46-50, F
We're not special as humans - we are the same level of special (the highest) as all other living organisms be they plants, animals, or anywhere in between.
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
We are animals (mammals) ourselves despite religion attempting to make out that humans are not animals but some sort of elite being.
TrashCat · M
@zonavar68 Yep. We are members of the genus and species homo and sapiens and primates. The religious folks cling to the notion that we are superior because we were made in "God's image" but thats ignorant bullshit from a time where the default to the lack of knowledge is "God's work".
If we were truly superior,we'd stamp out this ignorance and accept reality. God, Buddha,Alla, Zeus, and Flying monkeys are just delusional wishful thinking
acpguy · C
Baby killers might think so, typical of liberals.
acpguy · C
@Fukfacewillie Sorry to spoil your day but I am a not a liberal so that takes me out of that league that you most likely belong to if you are a liberal / democrat or socialist. Just look at Clintons, Bidens and Kennedys.
Fukfacewillie · 56-60, M
@acpguy Why the fuck would I think that? Idiot.
acpguy · C
@Fukfacewillie You are just another liberal loser, your readings abilities prove it as you did not understand the remainder of the statement or like a liberal you deflect.
There are now laws prohibiting animal cruelty, but no, animal lives are not valued (in the legal sense) as much as human lives. But to be fair, all human lives still aren’t valued equally, either.
eMortal · M
@bijouxbroussard best answer IMO.
Castenmas · M
Not quite, but it is still extremely important and of value, and must be respected.
SW-User
I have more respect to animals than humans.
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
For me they do. Idc what anyone says.
Gloomy · F
Same little value
Fukfacewillie · 56-60, M
@Gloomy Nihilism suits you.
TrashCat · M
I would argue more value
BalthazarBlake · 56-60, M
All life has value.
Fukfacewillie · 56-60, M
No, I don’t eat humans…yet.
Not being a utilitarian: no
Renkon · 41-45, M
@ImperialAerosolKidFromEP Isn't life in it's essence same? If not, where does it differ?
@Renkon it could be so argued but not if that means all living organisms are of equal value. Not only do I value the lives of mosquitoes and flies below mine, but I value their lives less than than I value my own short-term health and comfort
What about veggies?

Renkon · 41-45, M
@NativePortlander1970 Yes that's something to ponder too. May be we have to look into the concept of life itself. Is life one thing or is it different entities know by same name.
@Renkon It's a joke
Renkon · 41-45, M
@NativePortlander1970 Yes I see that. Still it was intelligent one.
