What kind of fish do you have with 'fish and chips' in the States?

Or is it called a 'fish fry'?
In the UK we have plaice, rock, cod, haddock. I always have plaice, a flat fish and it's delicious. 🐟

Here in Oz a local fish called flathead... Delicious🤗
eventtemple123 · 22-25, M
Here in The South catfish and whiting are extremely popular. The batter's also more like what you get on your chicken at KFC. It's also served with coleslaw rater than mushy peas.
TrashCat · M
@eventtemple123 I don't like the whiting ad Talapi is just fish marinated in its own piss
SW-User
@eventtemple123 I forgot about whiting, we have it over here, although it isn't usually sold with fish and chips.

@TrashCat Yeeeeew!

Usually in the restaurants that serve fish and chips in the UK and Fish and Fries or onion rings in the US the fish is usually cod or haddock. But I love fresh caught sea fish of any kind, and fresh water wise here trout, perch, walleye, pike, and bluegill.
afaik most 'fish and chips' fish around me tends to be Cod. much farther west and south fried catfish becomes more of a staple, although it's never really done with fries or chips... or anything other than hushpuppies from what I recall.

@stound We have a fish known as rock eel, and I was told it's supposed to be catfish. No real idea though. Tastes nice and only has one bone down the middle, but it's nothing to do with eels.
@SW-User interesting. back home they talk about flathead catfish that get big enough that you can pull an edible fillet from the top of their flat heads.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@SW-User It's dogfish, smooth hound, or huss, which are small sharks that can be fished more sustainably than cod and halibut. Really delicious.

You have the good stuff there. The fast food fish & chips here places started slicing their fish thin and doubling the batter a long time ago. Long John Silvers closed up here several years ago because people weren’t having it. It used to be the number one chain for fish & chips in the USA. . It is very unhealthy. That fish on the plate in the photo looks delicious.

@KimmyGary Wow. Have you tried better fish? Like, fish with flavor? Tilapia is farm fish and you should try better fish if you want to be happy for the rest of your life. 👍

@Vin53 haha bass
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
@KimmyGary we get tilapia in our local drains lol

When I order it at a restaurant, I only do so if it's cod... too often they try to substitute it with pollock or some other whitefish.

I'd accept haddock or halibut, but that's almost never an option here.
Vin53 · M
@Ontheroad A lot of Restaurants have been known to just say scrod when asked.
Ontheroad · M
@Vin53 Yeah, and when you question them, they don't know scrod refers to several different young whitefish.
SW-User
@Ontheroad My local chippy always has cod, I've never known them to serve pollock, but the price of the fish is extravagant. £11- without the chips!
DragonFruit · 61-69, M
In the US, when it’s called "fish & chips" (we usually call it fish and fries) it’s generally cod.
Plaice is a type of flounder, which I find preferable to cod....but it’s usually not an option in places that dell “fish & chips”.
my friend the fisherman upon seeing my barramundi arrive to the table at a restaurant one night....

'thats not barramundi... it might have been in the barrow since monday..

but that aint barramundi" ..
Cant beat a nice piece of cod in a beer batter with plenty salt and vinegar. maybe a wedge of lemon too
SW-User
@jackjones68 Yeah!!
@SW-User so delicious
SW-User
In my area it's usually cod for fish and chips outfits. For seafood outfits it's fresh flounder or grouper in my area.
ArtieKat · M
I'm trying to remember when I've seen plaice served in batter - the more usual (when it's fried) is breadcrumbed.
SW-User
@ArtieKat Breadcrumbs are healthier!
Vin53 · M
What do you use on your fish n chips? I love tarter sauce and lemon on my fish and ketchup and vinegar on my chips
SW-User
@Vin53 I love tartare sauce too, but usually lashings of salt and vinegar on my fish n' chips!
TrashCat · M
I prefer Haddock and Cod.
Since I moved to Tennessee I've been eating catfish. Any other fish is disgusting
Queendragonfly · 31-35, F
I'm not sure, it's fried and flat and white meat inside. Might be Pollock or similar.
Vin53 · M
Did you know that scrod is simply the fish that was hauled in today?
SW-User
@Vin53 Never heard of that word before.
Cuda6868 · 51-55, M
BC Canada it’s usually Cod or Halibut, I prefer Halibut it’s firmer and flakier imo.
Vin53 · M
Haddock, Cod or flat fish. If its fresh its scrumptious!
It is..but I prefer Cod.
Pollock isn’t bad either.
Vin53 · M
@TheSirfurryanimalWales McD's uses pollack.
Krysclear · 31-35, F
Cod and haddock are the most common types
Slade · 56-60, M
Scrod in the Boston area. Good but very light
Lilymoon · F

Zaphod42 · 51-55, M

Maturebate · 70-79, M
