What kind of fish do you have with 'fish and chips' in the States?

Or is it called a 'fish fry'?
In the UK we have plaice, rock, cod, haddock. I always have plaice, a flat fish and it's delicious. 馃悷

I'm trying to remember when I've seen plaice served in batter - the more usual (when it's fried) is breadcrumbed.
