The bathroom had gold plated taps, when I first got to know her they had half a dozen peacocks in an enclosure in the garden, as we got older the peacocks were replaced with a heated swimming pool, she had 3 horses and a grand piano.

As well as all that she had the biggest grandest dolls house I've ever seen, it even had working lights and I confess I was very jealous of her dolls house.

She was one of the loveliest people I've ever known rich or poor.
The first time I really realized somebody was R.I.C.H. was when I was 49. I was invited to a weekend party in McLean, VA. It was way over the top. Their patio had life-sized Greek statues. Copies, I hope. The wine cellar was three times the size of my apartment. The hostess had been face-lifted so many times she looked perpetually astonished.

There were only about three of us regular people and every now and again our eyes would meet and we too would look over-face lifted.

But in the final reckoning they were at least as unhappy as regular people and a few drinks brought that out.

The husband of the house was a government contractor.

This was not at my friend's house, but at college. My roommate's parents came to visit her and they took us both out to dinner, and her father was trying very hard to get me to order the steak (I didn't want the steak, though). He owned a car dealership.
@Poppies I have another story from college. At a small New England school, a freshman girl lodged (stabled?) her horse at a nearby farm!

mid to late 80's, friend's father was about the only person around that had a big screen tv (50 inch) & satellite TV

he also had multiple vcr's to record movies constantly on multiple channels; basically he was where everyone went to borrow movies to watch before we had a descent movie rental store (had a giant bookshelf next to tv with several hundred vhs tapes)

The fact that he had a maid who answered the door when I very first went to his house. And then he told me his dad is a doctor, so that explains why when I saw more of his house, that I noticed his house is huge and has multiple staircases that go upstairs, a cabana with a pool next to it, a backyard with a big ping pong table, and a basement that is a hang out room, bar area, and gym all in one. Yeah, very fancy.

Her family had a hand-built brick barbecue in their back yard and were always grilling steaks. And they called their drinks "cocktails." (Midwest, late 60s/early 70s.)

I wasn't staying at my friend's house, but at her yacht, and when she told me they had 2 more in a different harbor, I asked her jokingly if they were multi-millionaires, and she just looked at me awkwardly. 😂

I don't know about rich, but my cousin on my dad's side definitely had me convinced he lived a life of privilege. His house had an unfinished basement, with sheetrock that as far as I know never got painted. He turned this basement into a pretend paradise, and his parents allowed him to use markers all over the walls to that end. We would play for hours while my dad was upstairs visiting with his brother.

They had so many snacks. Different sodas in the fridge, free flowing chips and chocolate. It was on that day that we became best friends. Also they had a piano, heated floors, so many toys and the full cable package.

I remember these two guy's that went to school with me. They lived just down the road from my best friend's house. They would usually get 2 or 3 of every game system that came out. I remember the dad he had like a 60 inch TV. He had the best sound system

I've always only had friends from standard middle class families. I deliberately avoided rich kids because I thought they were snobby and bragging but they were just living their life like they always used to. They never knew anything else. Either way, I always avoided social circles where I knew I didn't belong .

I once went over to a friend's house after school and discovered she had a maid.

They had a pool and a basement with a big pool table. They also traveled to Europe on the Queen Mary.

I never had any rich friends. Actually, I don’t think anyone in my town was rich.
RunTheJulz · 46-50, F
Their dad had a Ferrari in his garage that he drove on the weekends.
Vampkatxx · 31-35, F
That they had a whole separate basement home and an upstairs part I was never allowed to see.
Well, because they were, I had quite a few rich friends.. They had huge houses, stables, cars, everything money can buy
the butler answered the door and led me to the sitting room until she came down
Kuronekko · 41-45, F
She had her own room with a set of matching furniture.
nobodyishome · 31-35, F
rich people get rich by being effortless. They worked their ass off since 2 billion years, and now they get to eat the fruit. Why are We jealous of that?

Palestine, I will spell it out for you... We are not there yet.

Purgatory?

Namaz?

Get it?

I'm open to questions now.

Huge inground pool and 3 bathrooms
Their Mom drove a fancy sports car

@pripyatamusementpark I used to wonder what alot of the people in my neighborhood did to afford the all fancy stuff they had. Fancy new cars, and such until the 90s recession hit and I saw those cars getting repossessed and the houses were being foreclosed on.
I found out later from a realtor that people were basically using the equity in their homes like an ATM to fund their keeping up with the Joneses lifestyle.
