mid to late 80's, friend's father was about the only person around that had a big screen tv (50 inch) & satellite TV
he also had multiple vcr's to record movies constantly on multiple channels; basically he was where everyone went to borrow movies to watch before we had a descent movie rental store (had a giant bookshelf next to tv with several hundred vhs tapes)
