No but I couldn’t read as a child. I only started to learn when I left school

ArtieKat · M
The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton

Primnproper · 56-60, F
@ArtieKat loved Enid Blyton. 👍
@ArtieKat My father bought me the original E.E.Milne collection and the Tolkien LOTR books, including The Hobbit.
He’d enjoyed reading them as a child.
ArtieKat · M
@bijouxbroussard I was about 14 when I stayed awake until the early hours - on a school night - reading LOTR, utterly captivated!
AndysAttic · 56-60, M
Kidnapped by RLS.

No longer have the cover, I also had several versions including an extremely old one given to me by my Grandfather, my Father also owned it.

A couple... When We Were Very Young and Are You There God It's Me Margaret?
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Fungirlmmm what were so good about them?
Fungirlmmm · 51-55, F
@Primnproper Margaret was a little girl that was going through the changes to become a woman. She talked a lot about things all girls go through and it helped me understand I wasn't alone.

When We Were is a poetry book narrated by Christopher Robin. It had a lot of childhood poetry. I loved Winnie rhe Pooh growing up, but I think one of the things that drew me to that book was,that my mother had recreated many of the characters in artwork either from her own inagination or from the illustrations. We had quilts with enbroidered blocks of the characters.... quotes from the book in calligraphy.... drawn pics framed on our walls etc. That was one of the books she used a lot, along with Alice in Wonderland.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Fungirlmmm how wonderful!
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@RenFur I haven't watched it. I very rarely watch film/TV adaptations of my favourite books . . ruined Harry Potter for me back in the day 😕
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@SunshineGirl very popular when i was younger too.

AdaXI · 41-45, T
I didn't read many books as a child but The Iron Man by Ted Hughes and as I got a little older Empty World by John Christopher were two that really stuck in my mind.
乂º◡º乂
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@AdaXI I loved reading the Iron Man at school.
AdaXI · 41-45, T
Z for Zachariah by Robert C. O'Brien, another book I nearly forgot about. I seemed to have a thing for all the post apocalyptic stuff as I got high school, lolz.

@RenFur But yeah The Ironman has a very British feel too it. Similar to something Roaid Dahl might of wrote in the fairy tale type of world it's set in but a touch darker in it's undertones of war, prejudice, redemption, friendship.

@SunshineGirl Yeah seemed to vaguely remember it might of even been a book we studied at school. Like either took in turns to read aloud in class or took a copy home to read and then wrote about I honestly can't remember. It could just be my mind playing tricks on me.

Primnproper · 56-60, F
@AdaXI awesome reads..👍
Gumba1000 · M
I liked a, ladybird book about bridges. I think it was just called "Bridges". 🤷
Gumba1000 · M
@Primnproper Yes indeed! I've seen the Forth Rail Bridge as well a London Tower Bridge. I have a long way to go to complete seeing all the bridges in that book.

Richard Scary when I was really little, Shel Sliverstein in elementary, Charlotte's Webb, then Zilpha Keatly Snyder as a tween- I read a lot of her stuff but the Green Sky trilogy was my favorite. As a young teen I discovered the the Time-Life Mystery Series in the Non-fiction section and my little mind was blown.
No, but I had a favorite author. He's American and long dead though. Louis L'Amour.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@come2gether He wrote western frontier stories didnt he?..
@Primnproper He did, with meticulous details that really added so much color to his stories
Primnproper · 56-60, F
Ontheroad · M
Several... Swiss Family Robinson, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and Kon-Tiki... typical young boy stories.
ArtieKat · M
@Ontheroad I'm not sure if I've still got my copy of Kon-Tiki 🤔
Ontheroad · M
@ArtieKat Mien were long ago lost to time, moves, and parents who downsized, but Kon-Tiki was, I think, my favorite.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Ontheroad also great books.👍

Danny, The Champion Of The World by Roald Dahl.

I loved it then and love it now.

And will never ever watch a film or TV version because it will always be shit. :)
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@Thodsis Roald Dahl was a great author..and agree about alot of the adaptations.
No I did not read. So my reading age was half a year behind.
I could not read out loud.

Dickens nearly put me off for life. I failed my English Language O Level.
Then I discovered Hemingway, who wrote succinctly , with little description. A hard man in a hard world. Brilliant preparation for my English retake, describe a winter’s scene. I got the top grade of course, thank you to Ernest Hemingway.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
