Depends upon your personality and need. I can understand why some would prefer dogs, but personally I am a cat person. What others may perceive as arrogance -- after all they, are CAT, that three-letter Supreme Being -- I respect as a fellow being preferring respect as such; largely self-sufficient, but willing to use the litter box, keep mice at bay, and show occasional affection on their terms in return for shelter, food, and water. Minimal upkeep, varied personalities, and entertaining antics when it is their idea.
But when my youngest son's elementary school had a pet event on the weekend, he chose to take our watch goose. Which was fine as long as he was walking the goose into school on a leash--but at sight of all the dogs, the goose wound up in my arms and I had goose crap oozing down my pants leg until the school principal took pity on me and rather than waiting for the final judging and award ceremony gave my son the ribbon for most unusual pet on the spot so we could leave.
Otoh, if I had a pool, a walrus could be interesting [@pancakestan]

I have had miniature dogs, with hypo-allergenic hair instead of fur, and they are just about perfect. If you are healthy, you have to walk them three to four times a day, and that keeps you in shape. If you have a fenced in back yard, that is absolutely perfect! Their medical care can be hugely expensive, and grooming fees, and the cost of food, and flea and tick prevention, all has to be considered.
I have also had indoor cats. Medical care is still an issue and an expense, but you don't need to have them groomed. You can brush them yourself and they keep themselves clean. If they are indoor cats they don't REALLY need flea and tick prevention, and all you have to pay for is food and kitty litter and litter pan liners and litter pan deodorizers. The litter itself is an issue. You have to keep after it, because it does stink up your house if you are not careful.

Try a couple of stick insects (Diapheromera femorata) also known as walking sticks.
They're practically zero maintenance and quite fascinating

...yeah but can you have cuddles with them?
I think part of the "good pet" calculation involves the relationship.
Pet rock: super easy to care of but no relationship.
Elephant: great relationship but super hard to take care of lol

What type of human makes the best pet keeper?

@whowasthatmaskedman I don't have indoor only cats. Never had one and I know of many.
That's the humans doing. To me it's like keeping a dog only outside. And I see that all the time.
My half brother was such a dog person. 🤬
"It has a dog house to keep it out of the snow"... Not heated or air conditioned of course.

@DeWayfarer To me a dog is a non voting member of the family. Considered always and consulted where possible..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman it's the consideration part that some have serious problems. Especially when the weather conditions are concerned.
Here, in this desert, they have problems understanding just how hot it is. It gets to 120°f (48.89°c) here!
With my half brother, he didn't consider the snow being a problem. If it's intolerable for humans, it's intolerable for many animals.
It applies to even ranch animals. And why there are such things a stables and barns.
I have taken care of horses. And some of the conditions are deplorable there.
No consideration.
Would you keep a horse wallowing in its own muck? I have seen it happening on Indian reservations.
I like all types of wildlife. See my wildlife photo album.
Even snakes and spiders.
I never transported them out of their natural habitat.
