Depends upon your personality and need. I can understand why some would prefer dogs, but personally I am a cat person. What others may perceive as arrogance -- after all they, are CAT, that three-letter Supreme Being -- I respect as a fellow being preferring respect as such; largely self-sufficient, but willing to use the litter box, keep mice at bay, and show occasional affection on their terms in return for shelter, food, and water. Minimal upkeep, varied personalities, and entertaining antics when it is their idea.
But when my youngest son's elementary school had a pet event on the weekend, he chose to take our watch goose. Which was fine as long as he was walking the goose into school on a leash--but at sight of all the dogs, the goose wound up in my arms and I had goose crap oozing down my pants leg until the school principal took pity on me and rather than waiting for the final judging and award ceremony gave my son the ribbon for most unusual pet on the spot so we could leave.
Otoh, if I had a pool, a walrus could be interesting [@pancakestan]
