Internationally, two events that occurred at the same time in late 1956 - the Suez Canal conflict, and the anti-Soviet uprising in Hungary. Then a few weeks later, the Summer Olympics held here in Australia.

I had family members active in the Civil Rights movement, so I can remember my parents on the phone with relatives discussing the assassination of Medgar Evers and the Alabama church bombing. But the biggest news story on tv of course, was the assassination of JFK. I remember like it was yesterday, my mother explaining that everyone was sad because "a bad man had hurt our president". 🥺
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@bijouxbroussard wow, is it a true memory, or one told to you so many times that it feel like true memory. I have no memories before my mother's death when I was 11.
@samueltyler2 I have actual memories going back to when I was 3 and had chicken pox. I remember the itching, the bumps, even the smell of the medication.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
@bijouxbroussard you have a mixed blessing then.
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
Can't remember a specific story, but do remember listening nightly to the latest battle field reports from World War II. Tracking them on maps as they related to last known location of my uncle in European front. The tremendous amount of xenophobia towards Japanese, and Asians in general. Had nightmares of these big, yellow giants stepping over the coastal mountains and coming for us.

The first specific story: FDR's death. The funeral dirges on the radio that pre-empted all broadcasting.
Allelse · 36-40, M
@dancingtongue Nah. Caesar crossing the Rubicon!
When Peter Sutcliffe aka "The Yorkshire Ripper" was caught. I remember my parents and some of my friends parents standing in silence then the relief that seemed to fill the room. Me and my friends came into the lounge when we heard them cheer and I remember his face on the tv screen. That image has stuck with me. I was 8 years old.
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
I was 9 years old when the Edmond Fitzgerald sank in November 1976
That summer we had vactioned in the upper peninsula and watched the ship go through the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie , Michigan.
Still, even remember how they announced the ship at the locks
"And now, here is the Edmund Fitzgerald the pride of the fleet..."
@Justmeraeagain I was a teenager when that happened and I remember it being discussed in class. The following year, the Gordon Lightfoot song came out.
gregloa · 61-69, M
I was 2 when JFK was shot. I remember the NASA Apollo moon landing and all the pre missions mercury rockets as that’s all that was on 24, 7.
TurtlePink · 51-55, M
Probably hurricane Katrina in 2005. Which was actually the year I got adopted and moved to the US 😅 I don’t know what they were saying because I didn’t speak English at the time, but I remember people saying Katrina because there was a girl in my class named Katrina and we played outside at recess together
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
Berlin Wall. Maybe bits before that because my parents were so political but that's the one that's a powerful memory for me.
I remember three. When Michael Jackson, Benazir Bhutto died (first female prime minister of Pakistan or any Muslim country) that one was weird because my sister joked about her dying half an hour before we found out she actually died😭 I was 10 then.

And Michael Jackson's death, I was 11. I was eating a cookie and walking into the kitchen while reading the TV then turned to my brother like "oh, Michael Jackson is dead. Who's that?" Then they showed his face I was like "OHMAHGAWSH MICHAEL JACKSON IS DEAD"

Oh I also remember watching saddem Hussain being executed (not like the whole thing obvs, pics of it on the news) I think I was 5 then?
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@HijabaDabbaDoo
Then they showed his face
Which one? He had several over the years. (Sorry, Michael, I love you, and if you can hear this I'm still a fan.)
@LordShadowfire lmao oh no, leave Michael alone

When I was a kid, I never watched the news, but I do remember that JFK was shot and killed, and everyone was in a state of shock...my teacher at school, and my parents, who were HUGE Kennedy fans.
Adstar · 56-60, M
Well the first one i actually understood was about the dismissal of the Gough Whitlam Labour Government in Australia in 1975.. Oh yeah i was 9 years old..
FoxyGoddess · 51-55, F
I remember an overseas bombing of an airport and them showing the aftermath with the bodies and all still there. The early 70's were different times

9/11 if we don't count news that weren't news anymore. We had the Challenger explosion on VHS tapes and my brother liked to play it.

Aberfan disaster in 1966. 116 children and 44 adults were killed when a spoil tip collapsed onto the school and several houses.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Not major, but a newspaper front page: a photo of Adlai Stevenson sitting at the UN, his one leg crossed over the other knee, and a big hole in the sole of his shoe.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@ChipmunkErnie Or maybe the back page of one of the NYC tabloids with a photo of Archie Moore fighting for the title in his 40s? Would have been late 1950s or early 1960s.
unregisteredhypercam4 · 22-25, M
