I was 9 years old when the Edmond Fitzgerald sank in November 1976
That summer we had vactioned in the upper peninsula and watched the ship go through the Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie , Michigan.
Still, even remember how they announced the ship at the locks
"And now, here is the Edmund Fitzgerald the pride of the fleet..."

@Justmeraeagain I was a teenager when that happened and I remember it being discussed in class. The following year, the Gordon Lightfoot song came out.
