What’s something that scares you?

As humans we are all born with 2 natural fears: the fear of falling and the fear of loud sounds.

Me personally, I’m afraid of the ocean ( dark, mysterious, sharks, so much we have yet to discover)
And outer space ( the vast emptiness, cold, and the fact that there may be other life somewhere out there 🤔 I could ramble for hours 😅
I’m really afraid of extreme heights. In the 90s I went with my mother to a brunch at Windows on The World (WTC). Riding the elevators up took all of my concentration and I wasn’t peering out the windows like the others. I was stressed until we left.

Years later, when I heard that people were jumping from that floor on 9/11, I was physically ill. 😞

@bijouxbroussard I seem to have a selective fear of heights. For example, the Empire State Building has a glass-enclosed observation deck, and I am just fine there, with my face to the glass. but a few stories higher is the outdoor observation deck, and I keep my distance from the ledge.

Ferris wheels and roller coasters are NOT for me.

But I have climbed mountains (on walking trails. nothing with scampering up rocks!) and I am fine with standing on a mountain top after the climb. On the other hand, if the mountain has a fire tower on top of it, I will not climb that!

I have a phobia of colossal human shaped statues. Can't be around them and even a picture twinges at my fight or flight response. Non human shaped and I'm fine.

That and clowns.....always clowns
WaryWitchWandering · 36-40, F
claustrophobia

I also have extreme fear of choking, when my kiddos first started eating solids my heart would pound and I was always so scared they would choke. I still get nervous and constantly tell my youngest “chew chew chew” when he’s gobbling food. I’ve choked really bad before when I was a teen. The Heimlich wasn’t working for quite a bit, and everyone around me said My face turned red, then purple, then around my mouth was looking bluish. It finally worked and the piece of food went up a bit and then down properly. It was so terrifying, I truly thought to myself “wow this is it, this is how I’m gonna die”

I've never traveled in an ocean going ship, I've always flown over it when I've visited Europe. I have swum in the ocean, but not more than three or four dozen yards from shore at most. There are those in my extended family who describe sea cruises as being both very enjoyable and affordable. And I have never seen Alaska or the Bering strait, or Scandinavia...

As for outer space I am fascinated by it, but the technology our species is currently using to visit that cool dark realm is inherently unsafe

I always had a fear of heights but it's much better now that I am a lot older. When I was 12 I had to take swimming lessons. Scared to death the climb the meager 10 foot ladder to the high dive. Took me 10 minutes once up to actually jump off into the water. When I did though, I went back up several more times. :) At 15 I climbed a friend of my dad's 60 foot ham antenna radio tower to 30 feet. Got stuck there, too afraid to go up and too afraid to come back down. Finally climbed down. Sheez.
I am petrified of dark water. I cannot even watch The Deadliest Catch ... ugh.
@whippersnapper I get that one.
Henal · 26-30, F
Heights and public speaking. The most biggest one would be love though.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
I was told I wasn't born with the fear of falling. It developed later.

I'm scared of people.

About losing my beloved ones, becoming a burden for others
Livingwell · 61-69, M
@SW-User Exactly! Suffocating too.
Not being able to protect my children.

Greatest fear of all
Zaphod42 · 46-50, M
Just remember, sharks will only attack you if you’re wet 😉
Sazzio · 31-35, M
A big crowd is wha I find... unsetlling? I always end up in them so I don't mind it nor fear it but it is unsettling. Like I can be in a sport venue full o crowd no orobs. But long queues when people get agitated I too get agitated. I can feel the heat, the pressure to "Get the hell outta here."

At a bank the person in front took sooo long on the insert cash machine. A lady behind me spoke n sed "I have an appointment" told him if he can b faster... either machine was slow or he decided to go slow t take the piss. Anyways... I felt the heat! "Do I be a gentleman n give her way first? No... I was here first! Be strong... no... let her go first..." 3 minutes later (ridiculous) I walked out the bank, went other bank, inserted cash THEN online transfered it one account to the other.

My duality mind can get to me...
MethDozer · M
@Sazzio I'm kinda the same way. It's not a fear just an extreme level of discomfort and dire need to get out of it. Especially since I find it very unneccessary to put up with.
Torsten · 36-40, M
dying before seeing big event type stuff in my sons life for example when he has children or gets married and so on. I dont fear dying in general at all and when its my time, its my time but I would like to be able to be around for stuff like that before i go
elevators. when I was young saw 2 fat ladies get on one and when it came back to my floor 2 skinny ladies got off. afraid I'd come back a fat lady
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
Sometimes when I imagine space it kinda gives me the creeps too.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@SW-User It's the cold vacuum and the vastness of it. It's the feeling that any other object is so far away; it's hard for me to articulate.
SW-User
@JimboSaturn I could talk for hours about it lol And that movie
Interstellar freaked me out when I saw it (and in IMAX too 😱 lol
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@SW-User Oh that would be an amazing movie to see on IMAX! I imagined being an astronaut on the moon once and I had a moment of panic; all that is keeping me alive is this suit and tin-can of a spacecraft lol.

I'll observe space this way lol.
Patientlywaiting · 46-50, FVIP
Being alone at night in a secluded location. I always fear that I'd be attacked.
SW-User
@Patientlywaiting wow that’s scary,
I run at night sometimes but I live in a nice part of the city so I rarely think about being attacked. But I’m always on alert either way ☹️
Patientlywaiting · 46-50, FVIP
@SW-User I hate when everything seems a threat and you can hear every noise.
SW-User
@Patientlywaiting exactly, stay safe out there
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
Loud noises do unsettle me.

My biggest fear though, is probably being isolated. I grew up in the country, miles away from everywhere, and I felt very vulnerable.
Djofull · 46-50, M
I have thalassophobia, fear of deep bodies of water such as the sea, oceans, pools, or lakes
SW-User
@Djofull that may be what I have 🤔😰
Deep caves and very deep water..
Caves especially though..

The thought of being trapped deep under ground with no way out 😳
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
I have thalassophobia. What is interesting about it is that it's only when it comes to the ocean.
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
Little blue exam booklets, bay leaves, going over rapids and waterfalls on canoe, being alone in a room with my ex, swimming and watching the bottom roll down into black abyss, playing football and being put up against a guy three times my size with an attitude, loosing my wallet, phone, passport, or eyeglasses, fishing on a lake in a metal boat in a thunderstorm, and freeway driving on ice.
LemonWorld · 36-40, F
Those biscuit roll things that pop when you open them 😭 those are fcking horrible
Ducky · 31-35, F
Nothing. And I don't mean I'm not scared of anything, I mean I'm scared of nothing. Actual nothingness! If I'm walking around in the dark with nothing happening for a long time, I'd probably be so anxious at the lack of anything happening that actually encountering something dangerous might almost come as a relief because at least then I'll know what's there.
PoeticPlay · 51-55, M
Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia.

Neither of the things you listed, not be dad is mine that things don’t bother me but as you get older in life, other things, but fear and tear, not being successful not being a good dad, those two things of mine nothing else
Everything :O D: 🙀😳🫢😱😰😨
Allelse · 36-40, M
Large structures, wide open spaces, and yep space, it's huge and scary. Though I hope that someday the aliens invade and put this planet to rights.
Eternity · 26-30, M
Drowning sucks. Do not want.

I don't like heights either but frequent exposure has lessened that one.
IWasCallingYaLarry · 26-30, M
Not sure. Although I do love horror stuff and even went to a very scary haunted house in October.
Repete · 61-69, M
I have two things that I really don’t like that is really stupid. Ants and leaches. Don’t mind spiders
Convivial · 26-30, F
Space sharks scare the crap out of me🤔

Sharks yes. 🔥🔥
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
I've generally had a fear of heights/falling and insects.

I have a mild phobia of things attacking me in the water. To the point where i can psych myself out while swimming in a pool and have to climb out and make sure there were no gators in the pool. I mean, on the fair side, it was Florida. But it was also a fenced in pool in the middle of an apartment complex where I would have really seen any such thing before getting in.

Mines. I hate mimes.
SW-User
@basilfawlty89 mines? Like land mines? Or mimes like the silent clowns 😂🙈
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@SW-User mimes. The silent clowns . I saw a mime murder someone on TV as a kid. IRL I was poisoned by a mime. I will kill any mime I see.
