Do you think kids should have homework?

after spending 8 hours a day five days a week sitting in class doing work, I don't think they should. They need time to be kids too. It's important for development. Yes, a kardashian just said this and I'm agreeing and repeating here. lol.

Thanks all for sharing your thoughts

I agree… it’s a struggle when my daughter gets home to get her to focus on homework. She is in second grade, and just spent the whole day on best behavior in a very structured environment and paying attention/absorbing new information, then using that information on school work.

It’s a lot once she’s home and feels she can let loose, to then ask her to reign it all in again to sit and do some MORE work.

I get the point of homework and the projects, but it is a lot for them. I know the homework helps them practice and even study for tests (spelling homework helps her memorize the words for test on fridays).

@WaryWitchWandering Is she in the Marines? I am kidding of course.

My daughter's school day is more like 5.5 hours. The homework encourages independent research and allows parents to get involved in their learning. She quite enjoys some of the tasks she is set.

I agree, except kids here have to compete with kids from around the world. Kids in many countries spend far more time in school as well as more time studying. I am not sure those kids are happier, or developing more fully as people, but I am concerned that they are pulling way ahead of western kids. When I hear kids speaking, and every second word is "like" I think that their education and their time spent reading and doing homework might be lacking. I also wonder what kids do with their spare time if they are not doing homework? I would certainly challenge the notion that they are using their time to be kids, especially if they are staring at computer or TV screens. Time is only valuable if they use it wisely.

I think some time for independent work is important...which I believe a lot of schools work into the schedule these days. As long as they are getting time to let their own brains apply what they have learned then I think it's fine while they do it at school. It is a bit much to have it tacked on for when they get home as well.

In my opinion, small amounts of homework is good (just a bit). It teaches kids to be accountable, work hard, be responsible, and meet deadlines. And It hopefully provides an opportunity for parent(s) to help and interact with their child as they do their work. I know I'm a bit old-school about this.
Notsimilarreally · 31-35, F
@Markinator sure, but there are many ways to teach kids responsibility by involving them in other hands on activities and responsibilities. Around the house, extracurriculars, sports, etc.

@Notsimilarreally Good points - I appreciate your thoughts!

When my kids were in school, I was told they have homework because they don't have time to do the curriculum in the time frame and prepare for the state tests for federal funding. What I eventually learned is thst the homework is what they shoukd be learning in class, but they spend their class time preparing for the state federal testing.

Our education system is completely broken. We don't pay schools enough through state and federal taxes, and the schools need the funding the federal government awards through testing, so schools are spending the majority of their time trying to earn funds instead of teaching. The only real way for a child to get a well rounded education anymore is if you also teach them at home.

The sad part is, we did this to ourselves by constantly voting against schools and teachers. People don't want to pay the taxes, but they also don't want to know what their kids aren't learning.

I hated homework as a kid. But , I think it gives kids a sense of responsibility, teaches them how to meet deadlines, how to put efforts into something and getting rewarded for it ( a good grade), especially when it’s a project they have to work on. But it shouldn’t be too much of it though.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
I sometimes feel there is no work being done in the class and the focus has been on putting the teaching on the parents. When my daughter was a kid, she you come home with homework that I feel could have been done in class.
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
No I don't. I remember having a ton of burnout in school because not only did I just spend 6 straight hours cramming my head with information, but I had to go home and do the same thing, while ALSO worrying about completing chores and having at least SOME free time to be a kid.
bookerdana · M
Its one way of looking at it but in the lower grades I went 8 to three minus an hour for lunch.
When I got home I was a kid and enjoyed it..it wasn't like homework was a research paper, half hour usually..its all good

I hated having to do homework and that was the primary reason why I wanted to leave education and go into work. I was happy to work as hard and as long as required when I'm at work but once I'm home that's my time.
MyNameIsHurl · 41-45, F
I agree. And also adults shouldn't have to go to work and then come home and do housework
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
I agree they should have some, but not a lot. My kids had a good two hours a night throughout high school and even in elementary school They were getting homework in first grade. I thought that was ridiculous.
No.
When I taught intermediate school we knew it was harmful, not helpful. It's still not good for most kids.
Notsimilarreally · 31-35, F
@TryingtoLava it's too much on them
SpudMuffin · 61-69, M
No, absolutely not. I only did homework for the subjects that mattered, and I did it during lessons in subjects that didn't matter.
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
Yeah i agree with that.
Kids don’t spend 8 hours a day in school. They’re u ally finished around 3;30pm

Which is why yes they need homework.
@Notsimilarreally Around here kids start at 9am. Have a half hour mid morning break. Then have an hour for lunch. Then finish at 3:30.

It’s not legal for kids to do anything like 8hr days. Hence homework.
@AdmiralPrune Woah, half hour break. Im at the wrong school
@V00doo Yeah sounds a pushover doesn’t it?
AngelKrish · 26-30, M
I agree 💯
My kids haven’t had homework since they went back after covid
Notsimilarreally · 31-35, F

YoMomma ·
@Notsimilarreally he has nice kids ☺

YoMomma ·
Idk my dad said he did his at school 😅
pdockal · 56-60, M
It depends on the age
But high school should
Just to prepare then for adulthood & responsibilities
@pdockal by highschool they can benefit from it.
pdockal · 56-60, M
@Roundandroundwego

Even middle school
The amount should be grade based

Plus can the be taught everything during the day ?
JPWhoo · 36-40, M
Finland, which has the best schools in the world and the happiest population in the world for several years running now, doesn’t have homework.
Notsimilarreally · 31-35, F
@JPWhoo I recently heard that. The kids are more successful. And they don't test as heavily either.
I think homework should be unnecessary, but there needs to be enough teaching staff and resources provided to make this possible.
MasterLee · 56-60, M
Yes hw is highly needed
caccoon · 36-40
Not to mention I imagine it puts a lot of pressure on the parents
FlowerPetal · 22-25, F

Some, but reasonable amount
ziedane · M

ninalanyon · 61-69, T
No. It's pointless.
SwampFlower · 31-35, F
But how else do we train them to be good little wage slaves? /s
MethDozer · M
