I would say I'm left leaning but not liberal. A lot of my ideas align with the left including my choice of an economic system called the wellbeing economic system which wants to focus away from gdp as a wealth factor.
https://www.weforum.org/stories/wellbeing-and-mental-health/well-being-economy-people-planet/
A good example is New Zealand:
https://www.weforum.org/stories/wellbeing-and-mental-health/well-being-economy-people-planet/
A good example is New Zealand:
New Zealand was a pioneer in this space. In May 2019, under Jacinda Ardern's Labour Government, New Zealand launched the country’s first Wellbeing Budget, which committed to putting people’s wellbeing and the environment at the heart of its policies. Rather than focus solely on GDP, they picked five priority areas: climate and environment, productive work, Māori and Pacific opportunities, child wellbeing, and mental and physical health.[18]
Prime Minister Ardern stated: “The purpose of government spending is to ensure citizens’ health and life satisfaction, and that — not wealth or economic growth — is the metric by which a country’s progress should be measured. GDP alone does not guarantee improvement to our living standards and does not take into account who benefits and who is left out.”[19]
The approach was scraped by the subsequent National-led coalition government in 2024.
New Zealand has an active hub of the Wellbeing Economy Alliance, called Wellbeing Economy Alliance Aotearoa New Zealand (WEAll Aotearoa NZ). On their website WEAll Aotearoa describe themselves as "a non-partisan and independent ‘think and do’ tank working to redesign Aotearoa New Zealand’s economy around the wellbeing of our people and te taiao. We use an evidence-informed approach and focus upstream to develop practical, long-term solutions for the public good."[

Oh good. I just wanted to make sure you don't mind some left-wing dude combing his wig in the mirror of the women's washroom while you're in there too.

Socialist. I think the wealthy elite should be taxed and the money used to provide better public services such as education, health and welfare services. I also think utilities that we all depend on should be in public ownership.
Ynotisay · M
@PatientlyWaiting25 I am so with you on public utilities. Might not work in all states but it's necessary in some. And it would open the door to move towards renewables. The public component in most places now is shareholders and that's what's driving cost to consumers.
Ynotisay · M
@anythingoes477 It's interesting how the "ism's" just become one thing. People don't get nuance but they understand an enemy which is what they're fed.
"Illion" as in million and billion is another. I don't think most truly understand how much a billion really is. Trump increased his personal wealth by more than $2 BILLION last year. If you were to stack $100 bills it would reach more than 7,000 feet to get to 2 billion. About 1.3 miles. But MAGA just blinks. A million, billion, trillion...it's all the same.

@anythingoes477 Socialism, like the Scandinavian countries. Not Communism, like China, North Korea or Vietnam. And the MAGAs are the ones calling everything that isn’t fascism Communism.

Liberal, I think capitalism sucks for most people. It stimulates innovation but at what cost? So does war. No one works hard enough to be a billionaire. We need to work for the common good. Some are so scared that others are undeserving of what they get. Hierarchical systems fail when they become corrupted or toppled. I think that with AI we have the opportunity to have a nonhierarchical system that can make better informed decisions. AI can provide oversight. We need to eliminate wars and the profit of war. The monetary system needs major repair. Decisions regarding Housing, energy, and water need re-evaluation without corruption by robber barons. Health care also needs to become nonprofit while lifting the quality for all people. Even education and food production need overhauling and AI oversight. It makes no sense having laws if there cannot be justice because of endless appeals and corruption by the wealthy. AI can; again, provide oversight and raise alarms if judgements appear to be invalid based upon the evidence and existing case law. We have an opportunity to really fix the system.
LordShadowfire · 51-55, M
@Tastyfrzz I find that most people who speak in defense of capitalism don't appear to know the difference between it and simple trade. Do you find that to be the case?
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
@LordShadowfire Here is the definition: Trade is just exchanging some goods for others. Capitalism is the economic system where a privileged class (the bourguoisie) has the private property of the means of production, and the working class has to sell their work force to them in order to live. In this unequal economic relation, the bourguois appropriates capital gain from the workers. So, Capitalism is not just about selling and buying things (this can happen in any system, and money is not something inherently capitalist, it's just a way to make trade easier). It's about the economic relation between the two main social classes.
LordShadowfire · 51-55, M
@Tastyfrzz Excellent. I always like to make sure everybody understands the terms before I move forward. You've got no idea how many times I've been frustrated by people not bright enough to understand that hating capitalism doesn't mean hating an economic system of trade.
AthrillatheHunt · 56-60, M
@badminton why didn’t you just say hippie ?
@AthrillatheHunt Partly. But I'm more accurately called an FDR New Dealer type. I want the billionaires driven out of our national politics. Our taxes should go to domestic improvements, not endless wars concocted by war profiteers.

The much-loved Jimmy Durante - a lifelong and meaningfully active democrat - said it best (twice):
"Don't put no constrictions on da people! Leave 'em the hell alone!"
"Why can't everybody leave everybody else the hell alone?"

On what issue, and by what definition of those terms? The English language definition of the two terms are open to new things and change (liberal) and prefers traditional values, resistant to large amounts of change (conservative). That is before politicians and political parties mold them to their needs, and Katie barn the door once social media gets into the act.
Key example: Free market economics. First outlined by Adam Smith in Wealth of Nations in 1776 was considered liberal, even radical, in those Revolutionary times. Still referred to in British English as liberal economics, most notably in The Economist magazine. But in U.S. politics has been a bouncing ball, anathema to New Deal Democrats as contributing to the Great Depression, embraced by Republicans under Ronald Reagan and termed Reaganomics as a response to over-regulation and a traditional value, subsequently embraced by Clinton Democrats in carrying out NAFTA negotiated George H. W. Bush and the formation of the World Trade Organization as a progressive way to expand global markets, and now being fully rejected by Republican Trump's expansive use of tariffs and economic sanctions as a way of returning to core MAGA traditional values.
So the answer to your question for me, as an individual, is: both and neither. I am open to change and progressive ideas (liberal) when they make sense; yet want to retain traditional values when they have proven to be a positive factor for all (conservative). Slushing through the word salad thrown about to obfuscate which is which and what falls into which category cannot be determined by simplistic labels.

I want my gay married friends to be able to protect their marijuana plants with AR-15s. I want churches to pay taxes. I think most beaches should be clothing optional. I think the national government should be no larger than the state government of Wyoming. I think total taxes, (income, property, inheritance etc) should never exceed 10% of one’s income. I think no one should work for a government for more than ten years whether elected or appointed.

I on the other hand am a Liberal Conservative. I regard myself as a free trade libertarian sceptic.

I am a left wing Social Democrat basically Social Democracy is the most left wing you can go WITHOUT being a pure Socialist so basically I am still a Capitalist BUT I strongly support Universal free tax paid Healthcare, a generous welfare safety net for the elderly and disabled, guaranteed sick pay, guaranteed paid vacation time, guaranteed workers rights, strong environment policies, free tax paid education and good free tax paid public services but I want those things within a regulated fair Capitalist free market society! 😇😇😇 I also believe we should tax billionares VERY high because nobody should get that much money while children are starving in third world countries! 😤😤😤 Basically the exact same system as the Scandinavian countries which is a form of Liberalism called Social Democracy which is the most left wing you can go while still being a Liberal! 😘😘😘 Bernie Sandars and AOC are my two favourite politicians and I strongly believe generous Socialist policies are NOT the same as pure Socialism and we need more Socialist policies for sure but not pure Socialism! 😇😇😇

@LordShadowfire Yes and no. I approve of their opposition to DEI - positive discrimination generally backfires because it discriminates against someone else. That's the only positive which comes to mind immediately
