I doubt the educated ones in their think tanks really believe that,
but that's how they've decided to paint the picture to their uneducated followers,
along with variations on that theme.

Like advertising, you take a tendency, either good or bad, and exaggerate it far beyond the realistic to suit whatever story you want to sell; then you repeat it till it's so irritating, sickening, funny or desirable that it sticks in the brain to resurface whenever the memory is triggered by a related association or need.
Propaganda, not truth.

Those who don't bother to cross-check sources of info and facts, and prefer to have quick messages to quote at need, will then repeat the slogan, story or sound-bite to others.
They use their politics like clothes to declare their identity and sense of belonging.

The ignorant don't understand the difference between communist socialism and a liberal socialist democracy.
The two are so different that it would make life easier just to remove the word socialist.
Liberalism aims to provides a net to prevent the worst problems of poverty, unemployment, disability, sickness, old age and madness, both by protecting the afflicted and by protecting the rest of society from the richocht effects of these issues. It's at its best for people who have no family or whose families are dysfunctional.

Unfortunately, if you do the stats on conditions under different types of governments, the numbers are pretty scary. But that's a norm for the whole of humanity.

In my view, the only way to improve standard of living in an equitable way is to ensure access to good quality free medicine, education, encourage healthy lifestyles and work practices, ensure that there are sufficient jobs available with a fair and livable wage and safe work practices, and reduce inequality of opportunities. These measures reduce mental health issues, disease, accidents and crime, and increase people's abilities to work and be self-sufficient and supportive of family.

An increasingly urgent issue is dealing with climate change and its increasing costs of droughts, bushfires, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, cyclones, snow bombs and effects on food production.
@revenant Yeah...........I know. ;-) If one seeks a world wide collection of intelligence on the web that is catalogued and accessed through an internet server that uses algorithms to specifically collect and disseminate information from the greatest minds and learning institutions on earth all in one place...........that is just silly.

Especially when you could just make up shit as you go and believe whatever makes sense to you--or repeat things you heard from someone else that works in a Quick Shop or gas station and posts on the boards you dearly love for "information". Like "I WON". ;-) ;-) ;-) Or lets drink some sheep de-wormer.......so we don't catch a virus.

It's based on a few things:
Poor education, valuing money over an overall healthier and happier society, bad examples they wrongfully call socialist, the unwillingness to look into social market economies, indoctrination under Mccarthyism, lack of historic understanding where socialist ideas come from, ....

@Slade what part of the wealth of nations or the theory of moral sentiment did Adam Smith advocate for exploiting workers for the benefit of the wealthy few? I've read both and didn't see him say such a thing. What he did say was that he believes that commodities value was based on the labour put into making that particular product and that the simplest of labour would make workers stupid
Conservative politicians know what socialism is. It's paying their salaries...out of the same pool of tax money that welfare checks are cut from. But they also know the word "socialism" has been turned into a trigger word by FOX and other sites that love to sow discord and division in America. So even though GOP politicians are entirely supported by socialism....from free healthcare, to free cars, to free housing allowances, to free travel and even free vacation homes.........they know if they say the word the less educated that the GOP depends on for votes will suddenly be triggered and outraged and they will never for a second think.........OMFG my own politician gets all of that free stuff too. It's like waving the Nazi flag or beating down blacks or blaming Jews for everything wrong...or blaming Mexicans or Muslims for whatever. GOP voters love hating those things........and the word "socialsim" fits right into the category that triggers hate from their base..............and gets votes.

Notice how "promote the general Welfare" is right up there with "provide for the common defense"? Maybe you missed that part when you read the Constitution?? Yes, I know, general welfare means general well-being. That still leaves a ton of room for government support for the less fortunate. And that's what the Founding Fathers said:

@anythingoes477 the government contracts with private companies to provide many/most of the services associated with those programs/agencies. that's because only the government has the financial resources, that it derives through taxes, to fund such large operations... for example, NASA.
@boudinMan Everything on that list is completely funded by tax dollars. That is what "socialism" is. Programs or services provided for the good of all that are paid for by us......literally......thru tax dollars. This is just a small list actually. Ironically the ones that rant the most about the evils of socialism.....Republican politicians.....are paid and 100% supported by socialism. From wages to world class healthcare for free....to you name it. Including their lifetime pensions. Socialism is a catch all word Republicans use to get rid of anything and everything that benefits the common American. And dumbasses that benefit most from "socialism" are the ones that votes for the ones that would take food out of their mouths....kill their healthcare...take away their child care help....and ignorance stops them from even seeing the stupidity of their own votes.

@anythingoes477 i know those things are funded by tax dollars, but that doesn't mean we have a socialist system of government. as i pointed out earlier, the government contracts with private businesses to fulfill many of its services. in a socialist system, the means of production are owned by the government or the public. if that's what you advocate, just say it. i don't.

Because they've been systematically taught that anything with an "ism" is baaaaaaad. It appears they don't even understand that the military, police, fire, roads and whole list of things fall under the banner of Socialism. What I find fascinating is how they fight against having their own money come back to them in the form of better services. That's a mind blower. All I know is when you look up the "happiest" and best performing countries in the world they most all fall under the "socialist" banner.

Socialism could work but its very easily coopted. From a personal position i think socialism relies too much on centralisation of power. This never works out in the favour of the masses, which is socialisms selling point.

On a small community level it could work but then thats not socialism.

Discussing this topic is very difficult when there are so many interpretations of the word "socialism" or "capitalism" or "free market"
