Where do Conservatives get the impression that socialism means not having money or the government paying people not to work?

I doubt the educated ones in their think tanks really believe that,
but that's how they've decided to paint the picture to their uneducated followers,
along with variations on that theme.

Like advertising, you take a tendency, either good or bad, and exaggerate it far beyond the realistic to suit whatever story you want to sell; then you repeat it till it's so irritating, sickening, funny or desirable that it sticks in the brain to resurface whenever the memory is triggered by a related association or need.
Propaganda, not truth.

Those who don't bother to cross-check sources of info and facts, and prefer to have quick messages to quote at need, will then repeat the slogan, story or sound-bite to others.
They use their politics like clothes to declare their identity and sense of belonging.

The ignorant don't understand the difference between communist socialism and a liberal socialist democracy.
The two are so different that it would make life easier just to remove the word socialist.
Liberalism aims to provides a net to prevent the worst problems of poverty, unemployment, disability, sickness, old age and madness, both by protecting the afflicted and by protecting the rest of society from the richocht effects of these issues. It's at its best for people who have no family or whose families are dysfunctional.

Unfortunately, if you do the stats on conditions under different types of governments, the numbers are pretty scary. But that's a norm for the whole of humanity.

In my view, the only way to improve standard of living in an equitable way is to ensure access to good quality free medicine, education, encourage healthy lifestyles and work practices, ensure that there are sufficient jobs available with a fair and livable wage and safe work practices, and reduce inequality of opportunities. These measures reduce mental health issues, disease, accidents and crime, and increase people's abilities to work and be self-sufficient and supportive of family.

An increasingly urgent issue is dealing with climate change and its increasing costs of droughts, bushfires, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, cyclones, snow bombs and effects on food production.

@revenant Only the cheapness of the after effects

@revenant the NHS
val70 · 51-55
@Guitarman123 Oh yes, that. That ship is sailed alright
Guitarman123 · 31-35, M
@val70 because of the Conservative government trying to destroy it
val70 · 51-55
@Guitarman123 Oh sure, just like that government came into power after a coup d'état, a very British coup d'état. Makes me wonder how that island still stays afloat
Guitarman123 · 31-35, M
@val70 when did a British government come into power after a coup d etat?

Guitarman123 · 31-35, M
@val70 that meant to back up what you are saying?
val70 · 51-55
@Guitarman123 Nope, that is my hinterland for saying that you really need to sharpen up your policking. The people chose Boris. Try to figure out why first. Somehow that will help you more than anything that your fellow redshirts will be able to write this year at uni
Guitarman123 · 31-35, M
@val70 so because Boris was at first put into office because theresea stepped down you think that sharpens your policking? Please explain your logic
val70 · 51-55
@Guitarman123 I give up. You're not going to get it. Boris won an election. Corbyn didn't. The conservatives have one massive majority. Mais pourquoi donc?
Guitarman123 · 31-35, M
@val70 that dosent mean Johnson is better than corbyn

Guitarman123 · 31-35, M

Guitarman123 · 31-35, M
@revenant if that's what you want to believe

@revenant you upset?
revenant · F
@Guitarman123 nah. Take care man
Guitarman123 · 31-35, M
@revenant why you upset
@revenant If you mean there is a cost to the public purse, of course. The choice for free medicine and education includes a higher tax rate, means tested so that the poorest people pay the least. Deciding the tax brackets is one of the hardest issues. Ensuring that the richest people and corporations don't evade their share or move their incomes offshore or out of reach is vital. The rich hate it - but if the brackets are set correctly, no one goes without a healthy and worthwhile quality of life. In my view, France, Netherlands, Germany and Scandinavia offer good examples where such systems, for the most part work very well.
In Germany, a person's tax has two parts; 50% goes direct to the govt to allocate as it sees fit, the other 50% goes to the public services the taxpayer most wishes to support. This is one of the reasons why Germany has managed to eliminate acid rain, and has made the most advances in installation of renewable power sources.

@hartfire theory always sounds so nice
@revenant Its only theory to those that refuse to acknowledge facts. On the world rankings of most educated....best healthcare....least poverty....highest quality of life America ranks 16th. On top of that list is the Scandinavian countries.....etc. Google facts....drop the conspiracy theory guesswork....and enlighten yourself.
