Where do Conservatives get the impression that socialism means not having money or the government paying people not to work?

Basic ignorance (in the correct sense of the word). I see a lot of 'hard left' and 'communism' labels used to describe centrist and left of centre positions,by people who seem to regard the most extreme right wing positions as being the centre (or center in the USA).
