It's 999 in the UK. I've called it many times for things such as debris on the motorway, ambulances when people have been taken ill in front of me, Police when I saw someone stripping lead from a roof and the most personally serious when I was having a heart attack.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
Well, 999 here.
The Police a few times, Fire Service twice - once from a train for what seemed an unsupervised and unwanted fire behind lineside buildings.
Also the NHS' non-emergency number when I was still suffering the day after a bad fall at home. The upshot was an ambulance trip to hospital for an X-ray that thankfully proved I'd not broken any bones.

Yes. A young lady jumped onto my car in traffic! It was my daughter. She wasn't well. I was evicted from my home next door to her that day for my own protection! I'm still homeless but now I refuse to go return indoors ever, not like I can afford it anyway!
And I openly hate my violent and aggressive family from far away! No family, no housing. It's the reality of brutality and I'm doing just great!

@Roundandroundwego wow that is so heartbreaking. I hope that things turn around for you.
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
Not for me thank God, but all the time at work. I have a half sister (same dad) who was a 911 dispatcher we weren't close growing up but i spent a few summers at her house and we look like twins. She died at the height of Covid. I was at work one day and had to call 911 because a guy in camouflage was walking around pointing a rifle at people. She picked up and i knew her voice i just kept it professional and just said thanks big sis right before we were about to hang up. And i bet she was like what the hell lol

A couple of times.
The first time was in 2002. My friend Brian and I were going over to the apartment of a guy we knew, whom I'll call Homey. (Mostly because that was his street name.) Homey didn't answer the door. We knew that he was fond of heroin, meth, and other poisons, and that he liked to inject them, so we assumed the worst, mostly because he was expecting us to show up and buy a bag of weed from him.
Sure enough, he was lying there dead in his living room when the paramedics came. He had an empty heroin bag next to him and a needle next to that, I guess. They were able to revive him, because they've dealt with enough heroin overdoses that they have a particular drug they inject you with to restart your body.
The second time was about five years ago. I woke up to hear my dad fall off the bed, and he was whimpering and crying like an animal. He recognized me and called me by my name, but didn't seem to be able to manage anything resembling coherent speech. He was rolling back and forth on the floor like he was trying to get up, so I grabbed his hand, but he let go. I yelled at him to grab my hand, and he just parroted it back.
When the paramedics came, they said his blood sugar was 29. If I had waited any longer, he would have been dead.
I've had to call them once or twice since then to deal with our trailer trash problem, but nothing nearly so dramatic as those previous calls.

@LordShadowfire omg you've been through a lot 🫂
LordShadowfire · 46-50, MVIP
@AngelUnforgiven I should have left Homey in his apartment. He rewarded my generosity by eventually asking if he could move in to my apartment for just a couple of weeks while he helped fix things up. That turned into two years of verbal and occasional physical abuse.
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
@LordShadowfire omg im so sorry. We live and we learn.
hunkalove · 61-69, M
I had to call it for a woman who came into a shop where I worked. After a short message in English there was a longer message in Spanish. I thought i did something wrong so I hung up and called again. Took the ambulance about 20 minutes to travel 3 blocks from the hospital. Couple hours later a cop showed up and wanted to know why I hung up.
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
Yes. Couple of times when my partner fell and I couldn't get her up, and once when she was having a heart attack.
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
Just this morning . For one of the residents at work. I'm so tired 😫 I'm at the ER with her now.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, MVIP
@AngelUnforgiven Oh, geez. I hope things work out.
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
@LordShadowfire thanks her heart rate dropped earlier and she kept screaming do not resuscitate. I want to die, she's 96. I understand and respect how she feels.
greensnacks · F
Yes as a kid as a joke. I didn't know they have trackers. Also, as a grown up once, but someone else called first so I canceled the call

@greensnacks You got lucky. The 911 operators where I am would have sent a police officer out to scare you. Not to arrest, just to scare.
greensnacks · F
@LordShadowfire they don't come for emergency calls, you want them to come to scare a kid 😂
LordShadowfire · 46-50, MVIP
@greensnacks Oh, I'm not saying it's a good thing that they would do that. At all.
Yep. When I fractured my back, there was no way I was getting out of my house or to the ER on my own. I’m independent to the point of stupid sometimes but had to make that call.
FreddieUK · 70-79, M
@OlderSometimesWiser Join the club. We older people might have wisdom, but sometimes we are too independent for out own health. It took me a while to call for help while I considered if I could manage on my own.
@FreddieUK Lol….. spot on. I waited over a week and it had to reach the point when I could barely make it to the bathroom until I finally threw in the proverbial towel and made the call.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Several times when my late Mom had strokes and we needed an ambulance.

No. I have had to call a different emergency code twice though.
Adrift · 61-69, F
Yeah a couple of times.
Once where a neighbor set his backyard on fire and another to report a child being abused at a store.
The parent had him taped to a basket with tape over his mouth.

000 - For the Police, Ambulance and Fire service... I called the cops for the intruder breaking into my house at 3am but they didn't show up till 9am. 😒 But the Ambo's got there at 3:30am. The drunk nitwit got stuck in the window and fell asleep.
AndysAttic · 56-60, M
No, I live in the UK so it would be 999.
I've lost count of the number of times I've called 999.
2ndtimeguy · 61-69, M

Nah. Closest I got was once when I found someone's severed kneecap in an alley, I remember saying, "damn someone should call 911" my mom was like, "should WE call them?" & I told her "well I'M not I got a warrant"
Neither of us called but I thought about it 🤷

@ChiefJustWalks I hear you. I've never had a warrant, because I'm not a hard man to find, lmao, but it's nice to know that nothing is likely to happen if I do have to interact with them.
ChiefJustWalks · 26-30
@LordShadowfire I've had warrants for most of my adult life & I gotta say it's definitely a good feeling when you have nothing to worry about. That slight anxiety feeling when you see a cop goes away. I be thinking like "shit he could pull me over if he wants, I'm all good 👌"
Except right now I'm not driving since I don't have my license. I haven't had it for almost 5 years but I always drove anyway & would be watching EVERYWHERE for cops at all times. I won't even take that chance anymore though
