A couple of times.

The first time was in 2002. My friend Brian and I were going over to the apartment of a guy we knew, whom I'll call Homey. (Mostly because that was his street name.) Homey didn't answer the door. We knew that he was fond of heroin, meth, and other poisons, and that he liked to inject them, so we assumed the worst, mostly because he was expecting us to show up and buy a bag of weed from him.

Sure enough, he was lying there dead in his living room when the paramedics came. He had an empty heroin bag next to him and a needle next to that, I guess. They were able to revive him, because they've dealt with enough heroin overdoses that they have a particular drug they inject you with to restart your body.

The second time was about five years ago. I woke up to hear my dad fall off the bed, and he was whimpering and crying like an animal. He recognized me and called me by my name, but didn't seem to be able to manage anything resembling coherent speech. He was rolling back and forth on the floor like he was trying to get up, so I grabbed his hand, but he let go. I yelled at him to grab my hand, and he just parroted it back.

When the paramedics came, they said his blood sugar was 29. If I had waited any longer, he would have been dead.

I've had to call them once or twice since then to deal with our trailer trash problem, but nothing nearly so dramatic as those previous calls.

@AngelUnforgiven I should have left Homey in his apartment. He rewarded my generosity by eventually asking if he could move in to my apartment for just a couple of weeks while he helped fix things up. That turned into two years of verbal and occasional physical abuse.
