The average NBA salary is 4.6 Million
The average WNBA salary is 120 Thousand.
Think about that.

I'm assuming they think it's because the WNBA are women therefore they are paid less?

Could it be they are paid according to the interest in the WNBA? Watch a game if you see it on TV, it looks like a high school game with the number of fans in the stands, I think women's college ball has more fans.
Supply and demand. Ticket sales, TV ratings. Its all about how many eyes are watching. And in the end....... advertising revenue.

The NBA brings in more money. It's not more complicated than that.
graphite · 61-69, M
@HoraceGreenley The NBA brings in ridiculously more money. Without the NBA underwriting it, there is no WNBA.

People overthink things sometimes. I have a daughter who was really good in sports. It was disappointing that her activities didn't draw the same attendance the boys did. They practice, play, and work just as hard. But at the end of the day, it didn't bring the same interest within the community. It is what it is.

NBA/WNBA, these are paid professionals doing their job. If your "job" doesn't bring in the revenue then maybe you need to look for a different job.

@graphite Gymnastics?
graphite · 61-69, M
@JimboSaturn That's another one. But nobody has any interest in gymnastics except during the Olympics every four years, where the athletes don't get paid.

@graphite So true.

Women’s basketball did really good here in Oklahoma when I was working at the university. They started the program in 1974 and by 1990 game attendance was averaging about 65, they were begging people to attend. They were planning on closing down the women’s basketball program but gave it one last shot. They hired a new coach and attendance averaged nearly 7,000 and a lot more winning games and better recruiting to the program. One of the biggest women basketball stars when I was working in the athletic dorm area went on to play professional basketball but now she is working at the university as an assistant basketball coach, probably due to what you are saying.

There's also a massive pay gap between the major leagues and the minor leagues in MLB, or between the NFL and other football leagues like the USFL.

It's less about gender and more about consumer preferences. People tend to gravitate towards the premier leagues for their sports fix and not what they perceive to be lesser quality. Even with search engines, most people use Google instead of Yahoo or Bing.

I have 4 tickets for a minor league baseball game scheduled for later today, but I'm planning on just taking my dogs to the dog park while my laundry gets done

I'm still waiting for all the women who complain about this to start going to the games. If they really wanted to make a change, they would be going to those games, en masse, as often as they could.

Stop blaming men for lack of interest in women's sports. They have their own sports they like to watch. I'm not a fan of basketball either way so I'm not gonna spend money just to go to a game for a sport I care nothing about. Women's hockey? Volleyball? I'll go to those games yes.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
The US women's football (soccer) team is the most successful in the history of women's international football. The men's team is not very suucessful at all, but until recently (following a successful lawsuit) the latter were paid three times as much as the former. There is entrenched gender bias in sport.
Ohyeah3809 · 31-35
@SunshineGirl it’s based off the contracts they signed that’s all
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
@Ohyeah3809 Some of it was and some of it wasn't. You are right about the base pay and bonuses, where they intentionally negotiated a different structure than the men (although I think that may since have been changed). But there were also some dramatic disparities in things like travel allowances, quality of accommodations, quality of facilities, and other items. I thought it was one of those interesting situations where there was some truth on both sides. I'm happy they seem to have worked things out.

It's what brings in the money. Women's sports simply do not generate as much as men's sports. That could be a reflection that we as consumers of sports do not value women's sports as much as men's sports.
@JimboSaturn what does not used to watching women's sports mean?
The WNBA is hyped all over the place , it just isn't a public favorite, and the league is 26 yrs old.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@FreeSpirit1 But not as old as men's sports. It is not as hyped as much as men's sports. It takes time for the bias to go away. But that being said just because you don't watch women's sports it doesn't mean you are anti-woman.
@JimboSaturn Exactly , it's not anti woman, but some label the lack of fans that way.
It is bias though, the bias is against the product not the sex of the athletes.
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
I don't know what the reasons are, overpaid male players get to sit on their ass and deliver a substandard game. Female players on the other hand have shown more talent and drive for winning, and it's just not rewarded. I was watching the Women's Cricket World Cup and the Women's Football matches and their performances were sterling across the board.
SW-User
@Longpatrol but could they beat the men's team?
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
@SW-User why would they need to? If the women players play with a equivalent or greater level of skill in the women's league money should by avalanching in.

Nobody(I've not read the rest of the replies) has made the argument "anything a man can do a woman can too" That's true...within reason.
SW-User
@Longpatrol Because it isn't an equivalent level of skill. If it was they'd have a chance against the male team.
graphite · 61-69, M
Have to wonder about the WNBA: No franchise in the San Francisco Bay Area, where it would probably be the #1 revenue generator in the league. Doesn't make much sense. 3 pro-level arenas available, too.
graphite · 61-69, M
In Chicago, where the WNBA team just won the league championship, nobody showed up for the parade. Nobody cared. This is a town that drew millions for parades for the White Sox, Cubs, Blackhawks. The WNBA parade was an embarassment.
carpediem · 61-69, M
@graphite Arlington Heights is a MUCH better place for the Bears. But the idiot mayor sees $$ leaving the city. Surely she's used to it by now.
graphite · 61-69, M
@carpediem Bears are gone. Chicago can keep its coddled criminals while viable businesses bolt.
carpediem · 61-69, M
@graphite Exactly. Also the WNBA is going to stay so.... phew. They always have that
Harmonium1923 · 51-55, M
This is an interesting topic, actually. I don't disagree with the difference in fan support, revenue, etc. in basketball, so there's no way the salaries could be equivalent. But it gets more complicated when you turn to sports like soccer and tennis. There has been recent progress in pay levels there, but for decades women's tennis was at least as popular as men's tennis by any measure, including crowd size, and the prize money was much less.
cycleman · 61-69, M
What products does the wnba sell?
They need to expand and leap bounds beyond their expectations.
It's true that the market isn't there to support higher salaries. Not at this time, at least.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
Oh I do think about it

😂😂😂
@DeluxedEdition It keeps me up at night. 120 Thousand dollars is so unfair, the 600 fans that show up to the games every night should pay 1000 dollars a ticket to help out.
I have tickets for tomorrows Dodgers game - $488 bucks per ticket so around 2k for my 4 seats, but I could always go to some WNBA game - tickets are around $6 bucks each.

@FreeSpirit1 Good point. So you are saying the 120k is a fair amount and proportionate to what the men get for the dollars taken in?
@Ontheroad From what I've read the WNBA has never turned a profit, so I don't see how players could earn more.
Without the NBA subsidizing it it would probably fail.
Ontheroad · M
@FreeSpirit1 Thanks. After your comment I did some Google searches and you are right. In fact the NBA upped their salaries to $130k in 2020 and as a result is paying out more they can't recoup. I stand corrected.
