I'm assuming they think it's because the WNBA are women therefore they are paid less?

Could it be they are paid according to the interest in the WNBA? Watch a game if you see it on TV, it looks like a high school game with the number of fans in the stands, I think women's college ball has more fans.

It's less about gender and more about consumer preferences. People tend to gravitate towards the premier leagues for their sports fix and not what they perceive to be lesser quality. Even with search engines, most people use Google instead of Yahoo or Bing.
