The average NBA salary is 4.6 Million
The average WNBA salary is 120 Thousand.
Think about that.

I'm assuming they think it's because the WNBA are women therefore they are paid less?

Could it be they are paid according to the interest in the WNBA? Watch a game if you see it on TV, it looks like a high school game with the number of fans in the stands, I think women's college ball has more fans.

Women’s basketball did really good here in Oklahoma when I was working at the university. They started the program in 1974 and by 1990 game attendance was averaging about 65, they were begging people to attend. They were planning on closing down the women’s basketball program but gave it one last shot. They hired a new coach and attendance averaged nearly 7,000 and a lot more winning games and better recruiting to the program. One of the biggest women basketball stars when I was working in the athletic dorm area went on to play professional basketball but now she is working at the university as an assistant basketball coach, probably due to what you are saying.
