What is it about music?

I see on here and in real life that many (maybe most) people are almost addicted to music, and while I have some favorites, I listen to music maybe a couple of times a month. Even then it's only in the car.

So, for you that can't live without music, what's the deal?
OldBrit · 61-69, M
I can't go a day without music. It is part of my being. I have hundreds of cds and vinyl. And over 20 instruments in the house.

It's what separates us from the beasts
I don’t know for sure but maybe because

- some music can melt my heart (Tom Waits and more), or

- it’s the way it gives me wing to fly to heaven (Bach), or

- it’s the way it calms me down (Melody Gardot), and maybe

-it’s the way it makes me tango on my own (Leonard Cohen)…

As I was telling a friend yesterday, my only fear about death is that I might go to an after life World, where there’s no music…
Music is prolly one of humankinds greatest creations.
Its a universal expression that crosses cultures, religions and language barriers.
And it reaches into your soul.

I also think its used to stop thinking , to shut your mind up.
Close off unwanted thoughts .

Music is so emotive, theres barely a situation that there ISNT music for .

But then..... i also believe in balance. Sometimes a little silence is nice too.
@OogieBoogie

Music is prolly one of humankinds greatest creations.

It is indeed.. there have been millions of songs and Melodie’s through time in different languages and cultures that were written only with 7 notes ….

It puts me in the state of relaxation, worshipping, dancing and other things.....😌 I don't listen all day but I can't think of a day I've went without it.
LadyGrace · 70-79
Oh I guess I could live without music but I just love it, but mostly singing is my heart. Strange thing is, when I sit around my apartment I don't turn music on. I enjoy quiet, reading, and thinking about different things, instead of turning music on. I used to listen to it all the time in my car but I don't even do that.

Sometimes I will turn my favorite songs on and sing to them. I love to watch the oldies videos on YouTube and sing to them. I have sang all my life. I had a gift for singing Alto in first grade and I didn't even know that until I was in first grade in music class. It just came as natural to me as any thing could and I really enjoyed the harmony, along with the rest of the class. I was the only one that same alto. lol and never stopped, yet I am saying in public at a wedding and the rest of the time in church in front of everyone, since about 1965.

@LadyGrace That's really nice, thanks for contributing your thoughts.

I'm an awful singer, just terrible, but it doesn't stop me from screeching along to my favorites songs. 😆
LadyGrace · 70-79
@SumKindaMunster 🤗❤️ that's okay. Just as long as you're having fun.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
It's fascinating why we like music. I don't know is my short answer. It is like a spiritual food for me, my holy communion.
JustNik · 51-55, F
I think this sometimes too! When I was young, I was never without it, but the older I get, the looser my grasp. I still find pleasure in it, still feel it improves many situations, I’m still moved by it, but I no longer just want the sound of it in general and use it more judiciously. It’s beautiful. It’s art. But most of the time I’m so content with the quiet that I just don’t think to turn it on.
GunFinger · F
Music makes me relax. It makes me forget some of my problems, always makes me happy. It's just a part of me. I grew up listening to many types of music that now I couldn't describe. Every mood I have there's a type that relates to it.
SW-User
Omg only a couple times a month? What's wrong with youuu?

I listen to music multiple times a day. Why? Because it's beautiful, and it can take you to any place you want.

If you want a transcendent experience, listen to music.
@SW-User ithink what @Ontheroad means is, (and i could be wrong), is that although music is a 'guarunteed' trancendence, there is elation in finding spirituality in a random moment ....of just being .

Yes , music is beautiful beyond expression of words.
But so is 'oneness' , being absorbed in a fleeting connection with life.
A sky, the way light falls, an insect, the sound of summer, a brief interaction, the rythm of ones own step: all sublimely transcendent experiences, if one pays attention at the right time 🤗
Ontheroad · M
@OogieBoogie you hit the nail on the head, so to speak. You always seem to see what others miss.
@Ontheroad ahhh ive had reason, (and a lucky artistic personality), to appreciate the singular sublime moments many others dont notice.

Oft its called being a 'daydreamer', or 'unfocused'. Which i find funny, as its QUITE focused😂.

Its really nice when someone gets me.🤗 I strive to keep the humanity im supposed to have a human alive.💜
RubiesandButterflies · 51-55, F
I sometimes listen to it to lift my mood, sometimes whilst I am reading or painting. I even listen if I'm feeling annoyed to get my anger out of my system with something loud and heavy. Or when I'm sad something melancholy to cry to. There is music for every emotion and every situation. That's why I love it!
We’re not the only creatures that appreciate and use music. David Attenborough did a BBC documentary on the subject a number of years ago.

It’s extremely important for visual media. The only thing worth I like collecting and it definitively makes a big part of my personality.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
It's part of my identity. I can meet a fellow fan of a band I love and we bond instantly over our love of whatever band we are discussing.

It's nostalgia. I can listen to a song from the 80's and it instantly transports me to that time and I have hazy, rosy memories of my time then.

Do you get "anticipatory chills" when you listen to a particular piece of music that really moves you?
Ontheroad · M
@SumKindaMunster seeing someone I care about and haven't seen for some period of time. Seeing my children. Accomplishing things I thought were going to be difficult. Creating/fixing things with my hands. Going somewhere I've always wanted to go. Those sorts of things.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
@Ontheroad Gotcha, I find those things give me a warm, peaceful, sedating vibe, with music its more chill and exhilarating kind of feeling.
@SumKindaMunster i get those antipatory chills.

I often kokw within seconds if im gonna love a new piece of music or not. I get goosebumps and a thrill down my body and i just KNOW I will love it .

And yes.....mnemonics of music🤗
Taking you back to a feel of a time, or people, or events .
Some songs are completely eidetic, they conjure such precise memories.

I feel an emotional connection to it
Coralmist · 41-45, F
Oh wow I listen to music while I eat breakfast, instrumental. So soothing. I listen in the car to pumped up songs, rockish. And at night, I put on soft pop like Mariah Carey or Josh Groban, to feel calm as Im falling asleep. I was in chorus in middle and high school...i really love to sing. It has always given me a JOLT of emotion, energy, or joy. I just feel better hearing a great song. I even have on my music app as Im typing this lol!! 😃🎤(Its playing , "Be my Baby" by the Ronettes, from 1963)

Great song.

i could go on and on in a few directions, but to keep it short... it's what makes life bearable in the worst of times and there is no better way to enhance the best of times. when the right song plays at the right moment, or i play an instrument and can feel and hear my muscle-memory achieving near-perfection, i get a thrill up my spine and chill-bumps on my arms and thighs. no other art-form touches me as deeply
ShadowWorker · 61-69, F
My morning ritual is...turn coffee pot on, turn on the radio to listen to my music to begin my day.
I have sat in my car after I have reach my destination to finish listening to a song I love.
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
@ShadowWorker Yes! Totally agree.

It's magic[media=https://youtu.be/8yqN8GkZBXI]
It's life.

It's the emotions and words that I cant say out loud.
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
It makes my heart happy, elevates my mood and spirit.
Singing and dancing brings me joy.
Sad music when I'm sad helps me process feelings deeper.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
One of my parakeets will say “Play Music” when she wants to hear some. I play CDs or leave the radio on for them when she reminds me.
Music is great for the soul. Much better use of time then watching tv or being on the internet.
I can't imagine life without music.
What is, Good Vibrations create harmony with in.

Ill take cant live without music for $200 next please Alex.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
It helps to release dopamine. It binds memories and emotions, creates and brings up associations in mind.
It often directly influences one's emotional state with tempo and cadence.

The older I am, the less music I listen to as well. I need more silence now than ever before. The highs aren't that strong anymore too.
HairbrushDiva · 31-35, F
The songs I post are what I've heard on the radio during the day. I just like to see how popular they are on here.
smiler2012 · 56-60
{@ontheroad] 🤔 may make them relax and mentally chill.😄you know there is an old saying music calms the savage beast
SW-User
I have that same question for music lovers🤔
I’m not sure how to explain it. I can’t remember a day in my life growing up where there wasn’t music in the background, either the radio, records, someone singing or playing an instrument. You know how some families have get-togethers where even the smallest children are dancing ? That was us. When I was old enough, I was taught how to play piano, organ, violin. One thing that initially drew my parents together was that they both came from families with musicians. So it’s always just been a part of my life.
Ontheroad · M
@bijouxbroussard I think you may have hit on at least part of why I'm just not into music. I grew up in a non-musical family and can't remember music playing, as in not ever.
Iwillwait · M
I am one for music daily. I need it.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
As necessary as food, water, or shelter. For real. If you don't feel that way, there is zero I can do to convince you.
Ontheroad · M
@uncalled4 You are right and I didn't ask to be convinced, rather to understand why others seem to live for music.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@Ontheroad My point is that you do not understand, which is not meant as a put down, not in any way.

Take sports fans for example...I've played football and baseball in my time, but in no way am I moved by the game in a way that my time is spoken for every Sunday or during the playoffs, etc.

For me, music is a sign of a higher being, Perhaps you'd call it God, maybe not. But, like so many, I am able to perceive immense feelings and emotions based on sound---joy, sadness, elation, wonderment, even anger and aggression. Sometimes, I'm not even certain what exactly I feel, but I pursue it often--that's why I listen to and create music.
When I'm in the studio or playing live, I get this feeling--that this is exactly what I should be doing. I do not get that feeling at any other time.
SW-User
Yes I hate how it's forced on me sometimes..
pancakeslam · 41-45, M
it relieves some mental boredom but I don't need it
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
Music is there for you when you are happy and it’s there for you when you are sad.

There is music that just expresses what I can’t say myself.
caesar7 · 61-69, M
To me, music is a great way to soothe stress and to relax and bring some sense of nostalgia and appreciation for the music of my generation. My taste in music is not the norm. I prefer creativity and originality. I never listen to today's music except in the genres that interest me. There is nothing for me in popular music.
