What do you DISlike about restaurants in your home town? ..

.. or anywhere! .. Apart from issues around tipping, the big restaurant annoyance for me is the amount of hard interior surfacing that boosts the noise level. Sometimes I poke my head in the door and decide 'No thanks'; Or I'll leave without ordering, after sitting for a couple of uncomfortable minutes. My favorites are the few where MW and I can still enjoy a quiet meal together.
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
kids getting paid $15 a hour and still fucking up your meal, then using the excuse that they don't get paid enough to be competent at their jobs...
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
@ffony probably why none of them stay open more than a few years, and/or have pissed off the locals to the point that they rely completely on tourists during the summer months...
ffony · M
@wildbill83 Have you considered opening a restaurant yourself, that would be different from the ones you describe? If you did, or you even just vaguely thought about it, what practical steps would you start with, to make sure it fulfils your vision?
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
@ffony I'm a contractor/engineer, why would I open a restaurant?

Imagine If I treated my work/customers the way gen z burger flippers treat theirs?

I'd get sued and/or be in prison...
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
Bland mediocre food that is expensive. Chain restaurants where nothing is really made from scratch on the premises.
@JimboSaturn It’s sad seeing so many mom-n-pops go under.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@OlderSometimesWiser I agree, it make our culture so flat and homogenous. Doesn't matter where you are, it's all the same place.
ArtieKat · M
@JimboSaturn But you've exported Poutine to the rest of the world - and what's more fulfilling than posh cheesy chips when you've had a skinful of ale! 🤣😂🤗
too many asian restaurants and not enough other ethnic restaurants. we have 1 italian restaurant, no mexican, maybe 2 greek, 2 indian. whereas there are probably over 100 asian, mainly chinese restaurants
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@beermeplease yeah I think they are more common here than Mexican restaurants. I would love to see more Indian, Mediterranean, Persian and Greek restaurants in this area.
MrAverage1965 · 61-69, M
I agree totally, it's happening more and more.

It's time they realised they don't need flock wallpapers and carpets to fix the problem. There are plenty of acoustic panels available.
exexec · 61-69, C
I have hearing issues, so I avoid noisy restaurants. I can't avoid the really cold ones. Even in our 100 degree heat, I wear slacks and a long sleeve shirt when I go out for dinner. Sometimes I need another layer. Even some of the wait staff complain about the chill in one place.
ffony · M
@exexec Hearing issues - yes. I can no longer bear the sound levels at concerts, movies etc; but who has the real hearing issues - is it me or the people who need that much volume?
exexec · 61-69, C
@ffony My hearing was ruined when I worked in a sawmill and textile mill as a teen and young man with little or no hearing protection. If there is a lot of background noise, I cannot hear normal conversation at a table.
ffony · M
@exexec I wouldn't say my hearing is 'ruined'; but I recognize the difficulty you have, separating conversation from back ground noise. It can even be tough to isolate the voice of the person I'm talking to from others just chatting.
We don't have any is my big complaint. Well, a pizza place, that's all.
thisguy20 · 41-45, M
Noise in general: music too loud, flooring which amplifies the sound of people walking, the annoying sound of ubereats orders coming in on tablets...
TVs showing people talking about sports
Uncomfortable seating
Tables which are either too low or too high for the height of the chairs
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@thisguy20 Pizza Hut had a very nice ambiance in their older restaurants, 70’s-90’s style. Wood tables, red gingham curtains, candles on tables, subdued lighting. It was an affordable casual place for date nights back then for the young blue-collar crowd. Then about 15 years ago they decided it needed an update, they built a new restaurant a half-mile up the road, put two large dining rooms, each with 5 big-screen TV’s and brighter lighting, no curtains or any type of character. The only thing that even resembles the older restaurants is the aroma of the pizzas as you enter the restaurant. Several time I’ve went inside to pick up a carry-out order and there might be one or two tables occupied as large as it is…and this is on a Friday evening when they used to be very busy with most all of the tables filled. This is the type of thing I miss in restaurants today. Also liked the old-fashioned diners, they had their own type of ambience as well, clean & bright too.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
They are nearly all chains or franchises. No originality, no genuine cooking. Everything is reduced to a "process". I would never pay money for something that is inferior to my own homecooking.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@SunshineGirl Exactly! My own cooking is better than these chain restaurants.
SarahAndSamantha · 46-50, F
in my home town, how boring they are. 90 percent of the "wear do you want to eat" conversation boils down to "do you want burgers here or burgers there?". very few actual options.
SW-User
I grew up in a posh white suburb, and the food is too bland and white-peopley.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@SW-User I’m much older than you and what we had growing up was very bland compared to today’s offerings.Mostly like farm foods, or Heartland style foods. Italian food like spaghetti was about as ethnic of food as we had back then. I never tasted pizza or Mexican food till I was in my mid-teens. And didn’t taste Indian, Chinese, Mediterranean, Greek, or Middle-Eastern foods till I was 30 years or older. Opened up a whole new world of cuisines and flavors for me.
Crazychick · 36-40, F
The only one I dislike is McDonald's and that's because they support the IRA.
hunkalove · 61-69, M
I spent many years working in restaurants. I don't eat in them.
ffony · M
@hunkalove I spent many years working in my own darkroom. Now I don't 😄.

Is there a reason you don't eat in restaurants?

Prices, food quality, too loud, uncleanliness
Lilliesandlight · 41-45, F
Half of them close at 2pm
Musicman · 61-69, MVIP
@Lilliesandlight Yes! Yes! Thank you!
There are a few higher-quality restaurants around, but most of the restaurants I see are fast-food places. I guess that's true of just about anywhere now.
ffony · M
@PhoenixPhail What size is your town/community? I may do a rough count of the not-fast-food places here (abt 20,000) just for fun.
@ffony It's just under 700,000.
FreestyleArt · 31-35, M
Nothing much....although I don't go to big city ones. it's too crowded and I couldn't stand breathing the same air with lot's of humans just irritates me.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
Too many American chain ones.

However they are easy to avoid, as there is a wide choice of independent ones.

I have never had a bad experience in any of those, too.
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
Prices, portions are often too big and not every meal can serve as leftovers
ffony · M
@CrazyMusicLover Agreed about the portion sizes; but we generally order things that are good for take-home 'leftovers.' We often freeze those for later meals at home.
HumanEarth · F
That they don't take gold or silver or food stamps printed from the 1970s
ffony · M
@HumanEarth Ours still take cash - so long as the ink's dry.
I like the restaurants here but there is one that's abnormally loud and kind of expensive but I don't hate it.
SW-User
Needing a refill and the waitresses all walk by like speeding Ferrari's!!
ffony · M
@SW-User
like speeding Ferrari's
Or snobby pompous cats.
"I'm a cat and you are not and I don't even see you there" (Garrison Keillor)
nothing. theyre all pretty good. and good prices..

compared to other places..
No problem with tipping. Just most restaurants are really expensive these days.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
What restaurants! 🤷🏻‍♂️

Only fast food here! 😞

And even they close at 9 pm.
I agree with the noise level!

Also, not enough diners.
Shadyglow · F
they make me think of SW
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
One time I went out for a meal and the plates were dirty… the food came out under cooked and the waiter had grubby fingernails

Yuk

I left without paying 😂🥴
Zonuss · 46-50, M
Too expensive. But hey isn't everything nowadays.☺️
I dont like loud and bright places

@JimboSaturn Turn it down? Turn it off!
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
@ffony Exactly!
Musicman · 61-69, MVIP
They close at 8 pm at night and 2 pm on Sundays.
@Musicman Lol….. but with seniors eating the early bird specials at 4pm, they should be ready for breakfast by 8pm. Wake up next day, eat lunch and start all over again.
Musicman · 61-69, MVIP
@OlderSometimesWiser 👍😂😂😂 That's about the size of it. Lol!!! About a quarter of the restaurants here specialize in breakfast and lunch. They close at 2 pm daily and you can get breakfast until closing. We never had anything like that in Virginia.
