Here is a question for you dudes and dudettes!

Let us say you are talking to someone. A love interest! The two of you have been talking for a few months and even act like a couple. Then one fine day, he or she says that they have been invited to spend the night with a friend of the opposite sex, which they then proceed to do. How would that make you feel?

My best friend is male. And we live a few hours away, so when we meet up we try to spend a couple days together. The last time we hung out together, he stayed at my place and slept on my couch.

I really think you should talk to her. If it was a love interest, I'd want to know if he felt uncomfortable about it - I would completely understand and be accommodating. And my best friend, well... he being my best friend would be respectful of it too and probably stay in a hotel instead.

I think your feelings are valid, and hope she'll be respectful of them.
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
I wouldn't have to think twice I wouldn't like it.
I don't think online romances usually work out, but some do.
One of the things that people can claim,online,is ambiguity , they didn't think of it as a relationship ,but the other party did.
Not saying that's the case in your relationship.
otherspect · 51-55, M
@Justmeraeagain very true. The claim of “oh, I thought we were just friends” can be a lie, an insincerity; a cop-out.
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
@otherspect
I think any relationship should be fully defined as an exclusive relationship by both people's before you're a couple, that is my old fashioned opinion.
One person could be just thinking of it as a flirtation and nothing more unless both parties have defined it as a relationship.
otherspect · 51-55, M
@Justmeraeagain I agree, unless it’s been made abundantly clear to both parties that it’s a purely platonic friendship, with no plans to transition into something else.
Adogslife · 61-69, M
If you’re looking for a silver lining, she told you. That means she respects you enough to be honest. The downside, and it’s big, she doesn’t respect you enough to wait.

If “cheating” is the urge, you should’ve moved the timeline up (earlier). There’s also a more worrisome aspect to me. It means she’s also been chatting with someone else AND is comfortable enough to sleep with them. That didn’t happen overnight.

That means there’s a high probability you think you’re closer than she does. That’s never good.

Id do my best not to fall in love online tbh. If youve made a mutual decision to be a couple then its a bit of a heart thumper. Although if youve never met id just use DHV to demonstrate that higher value to yourself. Plus sometimes opposites are just friends and nothing more.
EmpaEmpa · 46-50, MNew
@Perry1968 You are correct that opposites can be just friends. But then I know she would not like it if I stayed the night with a female friend. Yes it is an online relationship, we have plans to meet in January however. I dunno, I would never do this to her if she objected to it. Even if she didn’t, I just see it as disrespectful. I hope it isn’t me just displaying childish jealousy
Perry1968 · M
@EmpaEmpa If you have feelings its natural to feel a little jealous. Feelings are feelings i guess. I wasnt being mean when i said about online relationships. Ive felt heartfelt feelings online. But please do yourself a favour and just try to tread with caution. I wish you well.
EmpaEmpa · 46-50, MNew
@Perry1968 Hey thank you. I know you weren’t being mean. I will indeed tread carefully
otherspect · 51-55, M
I suppose it depends on whether both people are actually on the same page or not, with regard to the relationship being more than platonic friendship. Sometimes lack of clear communication can lead to vast misunderstandings.
EmpaEmpa · 46-50, MNew
@otherspect That is incredibly true
If there’s the trust ,then its not a big deal .Afterall you’re also getting the opportunity to know her better without being legally involved.Its better to see all sides of your love interest and then take a chance
EmpaEmpa · 46-50, MNew
To everyone who commented: Thank you for taking the time. I have much to think about for sure.
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
It depends. Do you feel that you know this person's character? You can interact with someone and get to know them and through their actions and the things that they say and do, and how they handle situations ,you can tell exactly what type of person they are. So having said that. Do you trust them?
EmpaEmpa · 46-50, MNew
@AngelUnforgiven She have never given me a reason not to trust her, but I would never spend the night at a female friend’s house just out of respect to her. To me this is disrespect. I was just wondering if I am justified in feeling the way I do.

As far as her character, yeah we have spent a lot of time talking but the real test is meeting in person and getting to know her that way.
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
@EmpaEmpa Then tell her how you feel. Tell her that it bothers you. Some people may feel its okay to hang out or even sleepover because they may see it as platonic. My best friends are males. You have to keep in mind that you are on the outside looking in. I can't make you feel better about the situation. No one here can. It has to come from her. Your feelings are justified because your feelings matter. You matter! Whether you are right or wrong. That's not for me to say.
GerOttman · 70-79, M
What did she say? If you like it, shouldda put a ring on it! It's a test for sure but what's the right answer...?
EmpaEmpa · 46-50, MNew
@GerOttman I know right?
GerOttman · 70-79, M
@EmpaEmpa Might be surprised how many females have a two dudes fantasy...
I would have to go away on a business trip wait I am now retired, I am confident that Mrs. Kelly would not be impressed
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
I would conclude that our relationship is over.
Penny · 46-50, F
it would be upsetting but if youre not officially a couple then its kind of their choice.
Penny · 46-50, F
@EmpaEmpa its only been a few months? have you even met yet?
try not to feel too bad. just hope they have a lousy time lol
EmpaEmpa · 46-50, MNew
@Penny We are meeting on January 1st. I am flying down to her. Hahaha that is funny!
Penny · 46-50, F
@EmpaEmpa well, she must be considering someone else then if shes doing an overnight unless theyre platonic friends. which is possible too. i kno wits upsetting but online can be weird. did you ask her if they are just friends or is she going on a date? depending on how she answers maybe you wont want to visit in January
Quimliqer · 70-79, M
Time to move on!
Alyosha · 36-40, M
EmpaEmpa · 46-50, MNew
@Alyosha Yeah I hear ya
A little jealous
Prettybratbi1tch · 26-30, F
Are we together or just talking?
EmpaEmpa · 46-50, MNew
@Prettybratbi1tch We do not have the title of a couple yet. Only talking
Prettybratbi1tch · 26-30, F
@EmpaEmpa well if we weren't together but I really liked them I might feel some type of way about it but then I wouldn't have to right to if we aren't together
EmpaEmpa · 46-50, MNew
@Prettybratbi1tch Yes you are correct. It must be her choice
Talking irl or online?
Tminus6453 · M
