Should Student Loans Be Forgiven?

JesseInTX · 51-55, M
Absolutely not. Unless they’re going to pay back parents like me who sacrificed to pay for my kids education as well.

What needs to be addressed is the cost of tuition. That’s the real issue.
Dolomite · 31-35, M
Hell no, why should I have to pay for someone else’s mistake? You make decisions and you live with the consequences.

I made some bad financial calls in my 20s that affected me for a while, until I learned to only spend what I had.
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
Yep. If we can give corporations a free ride, there is no reason we can't give our citizens a free ride. The priorities in the US have been f*cked up for a long time. Stop catering to the ultra rich and start helping people who actually need it.
pdockal · 56-60, M
@Elessar im NOT a republican. my taxes are fucking high enough. i dont think coorperate welfare is necessary however they employ lots & lots of people & help with the ecomomy .... what will forgiving student loan debt do for the the public ?
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@Elessar I never said don't educate people. I do advocate doing a better job of it.
pdockal · 56-60, M
@DearAmbellina2113 stop confusing the issues ... people dont choose cancer ... people choose to go to college .... people choose to spend their money on other things so why should I pay for their choices & decisions ?
if you cant afford college then go get a fucking job & save
nedkelly · 61-69, M
NO WAY, Why should the tax payers and hard working factory workers, office workers, Walmart workers pay some one else education
Elessar · 26-30, M
@nedkelly Because without an educated class or engineers, doctors, economists, managers, you can say good bye to offices, Walmart and factories.

Back to cultivating the ground, while China and India overtake the west as the leading economies. Look how brain drain "benefited" the countries that experienced it over the previous century.
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
@Elessar I just read that we're going to take in the educated Russians to do those jobs.
Elessar · 26-30, M
@Tastyfrzz Eh, that might even work. Anyone with a functioning brain living over there has escaped or is in the process of escaping already, I guess.
Helping those cheated/swindled .. maybe.

I paid more than half my private college costs with loans that I paid back in full. Brown bagged lunch for years, drove more modest used cars, worked extra when eligible for extra pay, delayed buying a house a couple extra years.

It didn't kill me or ruin my life to be responsible for my own decisions. Others can adult up and do the same.
sasanack · 61-69, M
@4meAndyou what your whining about wont even exist in six months you need to get with the program .
4meAndyou · F
@sasanack You addressed your comment to the wrong person.
sasanack · 61-69, M
@4meAndyou oooops 🍻 sorry mate have a beer cheers 😎
once they make the last payment the debt is forgiven. maybe let them enlist in the service and give them credit for time served
deadgerbil · 22-25
Yes. You can't put a price on having an educated society
@deadgerbil A once holy boy like you usually only seeks forgiveness of sins. How you've changed
pdockal · 56-60, M
@deadgerbil I PAID MINE BACK SO WHY CANT THIS GENERATION DO THE SAME
Freeranger · M
No.
What is that saying to the thousands of others who paid their's? Thanks alot suckers??
Secondly, who do these ass hats think they're kidding? This "free ride" will be placed on the backs of hard working middle class Americans. We also know that, this is a pathetic and desperate attempt to buy votes in '24. It ain't gonna work. The mid terms are going to be the litmus test and I can tell you it's not going to go well for Democrats.
pdockal · 56-60, M
@Freeranger
dare i say voter fraud because there arent enough checks & balances in place to stop it ?
sasanack · 61-69, M
@Freeranger do i feel a sense of anger there , lol this is a totally different time we are living student loans are least of your worries . serial lol
TexChik · F
nope I think biden and the washington democrats should pay them will all their "ill-gotten gains" from the taxpayers.
AlyAngel · F
Nope. It is your responsibility to pay for the knowledge that you learn. Plenty of people have been successful without going to school. Why should those who decide to go to school not have to pay for that extra advantage? Not everyone has the chance to go to school and further their education because of cost of tuition, and they are responsible enough to not put themselves into debt for something that is not even needed to be successful in life.
4meAndyou · F
There is ONE student loan that will never be forgiven...by ME. My former daughter-in-law SCAMMED my elderly mother, (who was borderline demented at the time), into co-signing her Fannie Mae. THEN she defaulted on the loan.

When I became executor of the estate, I dragged my mother to a lawyer to make him talk some sense into her...because she planned to REFUSE to pay. (Because my former daughter-in-law cheated on my son and got pregnant with someone else's baby before leaving him).

The lawyer had to explain to her that no matter WHAT my former daughter-in-law had done, my mother was still RESPONSIBLE for the loan.

We paid $1000.00 a month on that loan...every single month until my mother died. Apparently death is one reason that debt collectors forgive debt.

I hope my former daughter-in-law NEVER forgets her horrible scam...and her dishonesty.
Torsten · 36-40, M
Hell no. No one forces them to get Student Loans and they are old enough to know what they are signing up for.
People are now just so entitled and think the world owes them everything.
No special treatment. Dont want debt, dont get a student loan. Its that simple
Budwick · 70-79, M
No.

If you want to return your degree to the 'institution of higher learning' because it's worthless, I am totally in favor of demanding a refund and getting it.
SW-User
No! Its an elective to go to college. Only pompous people would, when theres no work out there. Pay up.
Taking to task those who allow kids to rack up debt on stupid degrees …. need horsewhipping
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
Why should it be forgiven? One of the lessons of life is repaying you loans.
Randie · 61-69, T
No, not unless they plan to pay those who worked their ass off to pay theirs back!
No.. nada..nope.. never
Bluebirdsonmyshoulder · 46-50, F
Just take the remaining interest off.

Also, I do not think the govt has any intention of student debt forgiveness, they just know what to say to get people to argue and cause division
4meAndyou · F
@Bluebirdsonmyshoulder You're right about that. Since the idea was first proposed, Senators have been pointing out that it would be illegal, and that Biden can't do it legally...or constitutionally.

The mid-terms are coming up in November, and the greedy Progressives in Congress want their OWN debts cancelled...(Ilhan Omar, Rashaida Tlaib and AOC)...so they can get a lot richer from our pain.

But primarily, Biden thinks he can TRICK the Progressives with college debt into voting Democrat by promising a tiny little bribe.
no lets forgive school taxes for the retired who are struggling to keep their homes because they have to pay high fees to pay for schools their kids haven't used in years
yes, because I think the societal benefits exceed the costs.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@BiasForAction $10,000 in loan forgiveness will cost the taxpayer $321 billion. Our current budget deficit is $2.8 trillion...just for 2021.

The national debt is higher than GDP. The last time that happened was WWII. Interest rates are rising as a result.

We have the the highest inflation in 40 years. Doing this would increase inflation at least 1/2 a point over current rates.

The benefits do not exceed the costs
pdockal · 56-60, M
@BiasForAction are you kidding me ???? why did i & the resto of the generations pay ours back ? Nobody told these little shits to amasse debt. Nobody twisted their arms to go to collage!
wildbill83 · 36-40, M
take it out of the wages of those who said "yes"

problem would sort itself out pretty quickly...
4meAndyou · F
There is something illegal about it. Biden can't legally cancel ALL those loans without damaging the banks.

I think anyone I owe money should forgive me because they ain't getting it back
Ryannnnnn · 31-35, M
Yep. Education should be free anyway.
Ryannnnnn · 31-35, M
@pdockal Fair enough bud, I don't know as much in terms of what's available in America, I just want things to be good for people.
Ryannnnnn · 31-35, M
@nedkelly We're not talking about home loans, we're talking about education which benefits the economy and population. I'm done talking about it anyway.
pdockal · 56-60, M
@Ryannnnnn free isn't always good for people ....
Dino11 · M
Yes, a great investment for our country.

No

Have you seen the school curriculum today?

They teach false hoods like evolution and climate change

Why should that stuff be forced onto the tax payer??
sasanack · 61-69, M
@Stargazer89 thars your gripe , no thoughts on wht they are teaching 4 to 9years old about gay sex partners transgender ,one 9 year old was sent home with homework which involved asking her dad about masturbation and ejaculation . wake up
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
Fuck no.. forgive my house and car loans..

Read the fine print suckers. A freakin arts degree is not going to be worth it
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout How about gender studies?
Poeticdiva · 31-35, F
Poeticdiva · 31-35, F
@pdockal I'm sorry did me and you go to school in the same era? What decade are you from? Do you realize there's a difference between when I went to school and when you went to school? I don't want to hear that shit. Nowadays people aren't even making enough money to feed themselves or pay rent because they don't have an education so they don't qualify for better-paying jobs. But again, that doesn't matter, does it?
pdockal · 56-60, M
@Poeticdiva
college was fucking expensive when I went. Most people couldnt go to college because of the cost so im not sure what your reffering to. So because you cant figure out how to either get a job (or 2 or 3 like many of my generation did) or go to college and pay for it I should pay for it for you ? I pay enough in taxes already & cant afford to pay your way.
ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@Poeticdiva i care about the taxpayer. These debts don't disappear. The taxpayer will pay them off. You think it's "fair" that someone that did not incur the debt is forced to pay it off?

Besides, debt forgiveness only encourages more borrowing because future borrowers are hoping their debts will be forgiven too.

People make choices and they have to live with the consequences.

Grow Up
FreeSpirit1 · 51-55, F
My mortgage is a trans loan and is now identifying as a student loan. I hope it's forgiven, that would be sweet.
sasanack · 61-69, M
absolutely....... end of. 👍

@HoraceGreenley If only that were true my friend the us will collapse along with the dollar the whole world knows it, the us will/can not ever pay their debt. and when you get your electric wallet and your digital currency you will better understand as long as you have had all your vaccines . 🤔

Currently in the UK 75% if student loans will never be paid back. Which makes me question the effort and expense of a complicated system that puts some off university studies why doesn't the exchequer just bear the entire cost?
SW-User
I think it would a good option for those that are excellent students that are in need of financial resources , definitely should be forgiven.
Not for everyone.
sasanack · 61-69, M
@SW-User our a sweet heart ,but you seeit does nt cost the gov a cent they just print more money adding to debt they know and the world knows they will never pay. 🙃
The money is going to get spent and we're not going to agree with everything it gets spent on and it's not ours anymore anyway.

Then maybe tuition shouldn't be so high. @HoraceGreenley
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@Spoiledbrat I agree. Tuition costs have escalated far in excess of inflation over the past 40 yrars.

This is precisely because of all the money the federal government throws around in student loans.

It's a scam where universities are in cahoots with government.

Not sure of what to post.

My BA had no fees ( Dean's Scholarship ) & my Masters MSc cost less then my BA would have if I had paid.
